Born in Ingonish, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Irene (Stockley) Hardy. She worked at the Point Cottages, Ingonish Motel, she enjoyed spending time with her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren; loved to knit and do crossword puzzles. She loved playing cards with Richard 'Dick'. Anyone who knew her; knew that she would do anything to help those that needed it and her tea pot was always on. She is survived by her loving children, Austin (Judy), Sydney; George (Cecile), Ingonish; Joyce (Wayne Powers), Ingonish; Clements (Delia), Ingonish; beloved grandmother to Robert, David, Gerald, Alison, Pauline, Steven, Jeff, Kelly, Amanda, Chris; cherished great grandmother to Landyn, Bentley, Abby, Bria, Kelsey, Devon, Tyson, Lily, Austin, Gerald, Braxton, Paige, Brooke, Madyson, Destiny, Dustin, Ashley, Cheyenne, Julie, Richard. Survived by sister Gertrude Russell and brother Hayden, 'her other daughter' Judy MacLeod (Andy); son Paul, his children Rylan and Jessie and daughter Julia (Mark), their son Andrew and mom's namesake little Laura. Aunt to many nieces and nephews. Laura was predeceased by her husband Dick, to whom she was married to for 52 years; brothers, Sidney, Arthur, Johnny and one in infancy and sisters Carrie and Mary Jane. Visitation for the late Mrs. Hardy will take place from Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish on Wednesday (today) from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Friday at 2 p.m. from St. John Anglican Church, Ingonish with Rev Dr. Carolyn Sharpe officiating. Derrick 'Bic' Corbett Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: November 13th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our son, brother, Derrick 'Bic' William Corbett on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born in Sydney, on Oct. 31, 1963, Derrick was the son of John and Gloria (Hilder) Corbett. Bic left Sydney at the age of 20. He worked for Domglass in Ontario for 20 years before returning to Sydney with his daughter. Bic will be remembered by his family and friends for being very caring and set in his ways. Besides his parents, Bic is survived by his daughter, Destiny (Peter) and his beautiful granddaughter, Nevaeh, who was his pride and joy. He is also survived by his brothers, John (Cordelia), Shawn (Kathy) and Billy, at home; good friends, known as the Talbot boys, Blair, Dennis and Wally; as well as his best friends, Louie and Linda Margettie, who thought of Bic as their own brother. Derrick was predeceased by his grandparents, Pius and Alma Corbett and James and Bridget Hilder; and an aunt, Patricia Hawco. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of Derrick 'Bic' William Corbett will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, from 2-3 p.m. Interment will take place in Eastmount Cemetery, Sydney. Donations in memory of Bic may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and palliative care staff for the wonderful care given to our son, Bic. Mary MacPherson Passed in: California With heartfelt sadness we announce the recent death of Mary McPherson in Redondo Beach, Calif., in her 95th year. Born in Dominion, she was the eldest child of the late Frank and Sarah Vassallo. After completing high school, Mary studied nursing in Boston then returned to Cape Breton to start her career. In the early 1950s, she moved with her husband and two young sons to southern California where they settled. Years later, when others were thinking about retirement, Mary started university where she completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in sociology and behavioural science. Afterwards, she worked as a volunteer chaplain in several hospitals. Mary will be missed immensely by her son, Paul and his wife Mary, with whom she resided; daughter-in-law, Delma; grandchildren, Tyson, Danielle and Sean and several great-grandchildren, all of California; brother, Greg Vassallo, Dartmouth; sister Patsy MacNeil, Dominion; many nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Mart, son, Martin, brothers, John, Frank, Iggie, Bernard and Earle, sister, Lorraine. A funeral service will be held on Nov. 16 at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, Redondo Beach. Mary was an amazing woman of faith who touched everyone she met with love and kindness. In lieu of tributes, please commit an act of kindness in her memory. Elizabeth Williams Memorial Service There will be a memorial service for the late Elizabeth Williams, held at Trinity Anglican Church, Queen Street, Sydney Mines, on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 2 pm.
