Arnold was born in Sydney Mines where he grew up and later worked in the mines until he retired. He enjoyed the outdoor life and some of his happiest times were at his cottage on the Bras d'Or Lakes. Arnold is survived by his daughter Maureen; sons Joseph, Kevin and Adrian; grandchildren Carolyn, Jimmy, Craig, Dawn, Kimmi, Jennifer, Angela, Addie and Ben along with 12 great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his wife Margaret "Maggie" in 1986. Funeral service will be held on Friday the 15th Nov 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines followed by a reception at the Holy Family Parish Hall. Family members will attend a private burial. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of Francis Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Sidney Smith Born: February 28th, 1911 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: November 8th, 2013 It is with great sorrow I announce the passing of my dad at New Waterford Heights after a short illness. He died as he lived- peacefully & quietly. Born in Sheffield, England he and his family arrived in Canada aboard the Empress of France in 1919. Predeceased by his parents Horace & Frances; his 1st wife & mother of his two girls Margaret (MacCormack); daughter Helen Smith; son-in-law Holly Leet; sibling Harold, George, Sam, Kenny, Harry and Lillian Binder; his second wife Anne Moore. Surviving by daughter JoAnn Leet; sister Pearl Simmons, the son of his heart; nephew Harold (Butch) Smith & his wife Nellie; sister-in-law Ruth Smith and granddaughter Diane (Peter) Chauvin; Scarborough, Ont. Also by many nieces & nephews especially Sam's boys-Reg, Ronnie & Allister. Remembered fondly by Isabel & Jim Carpenter. On his 100th birthday he was presented with a plaque from the U.M.W.A. thanking him for his 35 years of service in the mines (#1B & 26). Da was possessed of a very curious mind and taught himself many things such as taxidermy, & photo development, wine making (beets) which raised everyone's hemoglobin levels. After retirement he took up woodworking. He took lessons in tole painting in his 80's; and was the only male in the evening classes. He & Ann travelled a lot (across Canada & the U.S- Alaska, Hawaii & Europe) and he assembled scrapbooks of each trip. In his earlier years he enjoyed fishing & hunting & gardening. The trout were delicious and the deer were mounted & his flowers were beautiful. He did crossword puzzles in to his 90's and was an avid reader all of his life. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Patten Funeral Home 71 Union St., Glace Bay. There will be no visitation or memorial service. "You were the wind beneath my wings" Lillian Jones Born: August 6th, 1911 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: November 7th, 2013 Lillian Dixon Jones, 102, a resident of Seaview Manor passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 7,2013 at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay. Born in Tanfield Lea, England, August 6,1911, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Florence (Dixon) Wilkie. Lillian is survived by sons, David (Paula), Robert (Brenda) and stepson, Ronald; daughter Brenda (Roy), nieces, nephews and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lillian was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. With Majors Kent and Dana Hepditch officiating. Born in Sydney, Gloria was the daughter of the late Dave and Theresa "Tress" Osborne. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Sharples, Dartmouth; special niece, Vera Pendergast; several nieces and nephews; and her friends at Unity House. Gloria was predeceased by a number of brothers and sisters. For over twenty years, Gloria was an active participant of the Horizon Achievement Centre and will be sadly missed by the board, staff and co-workers. A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday 11 a.m., with Archdeacon Brenda Drake officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. Born in Middle Stewiacke on April 10, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Susan (Glawson) Brenton. Evie worked for Maritime Tel & Tel in Halifax, where she lived until her retirement in 1981. She then moved to South Side Big Baddeck and resided with her dear friend, Margaret Hanam. She enjoyed travelling, golfing and playing cards. She made many friends while living in the Baddeck area, especially close in the later years were Pam Mackay and Marilyn MacLeod. Evie is survived by nephews, Andrew (Beverley) Brenton, Middle Stewiake, Donald (Vonnie) Brenton, Hilden, N.S.; niece, Sheila (Louie) Desjardins, Kapuskasing, Ont.; her dear friend, Margaret Hanam, plus many grand nieces and nephews. Beside her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Clark; her sister, Janet; her niece, Janet and her grand-nephew, Jeffrey. We would like to thank the staff of the MacGillivray Guest Home for the kindness and care shown to Evie during her year there. Malcom Vernon Gary Cooper Born: January 17th, 1946 Passed in: Howie Centre Passed on: October 26th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts, that we, the family of Gary Cooper, of Howie Centre, regret to announce his passing at the age of 67 in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, after a short battle with cancer. Born in Newfoundland, Gary worked as a fisherman with National Sea, then, later in life, he worked with Dilney Landscaping. He was a former volunteer fireman with East Bay Volunteer Fire Department. Gary leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, his wife of 39 years, Beverly (Harris); daughters, Cheryl (Craig) Wylde, Howie Centre, and Sarah (Joe) MacMullin, Marion Bridge; mother, Dorothy (nee Sparkes); sisters, Jacqueline (Ted) Crocker and Martina (Terry) Kelly, both of Fort Saskatchewan, Rosemary (Wayne) Brown, Newfoundland; brothers, Alex (Val), Labrador, Stanley 'Junior' (Doris) and Rick (Cheryl), both of Fort Saskatchewan and Boyd (Debbie), Sackville; sister-in-law, Vivian Cooper, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Alicia, Aulay, Emily, Kyle and a large circle of family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Stanley Sr. and a brother, Ray. Cremation has taken place at Gary's request. A memorial service will take place today (Saturday, Nov. 9), at 2 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel, with Majors Kent and Dena Hepditch officiating.
