Seymour - 84 yrs Rita Evans Born In: North Sydney Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: November 28th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden, peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Rita Evans, on Thursday, November 28, 2013, at home. Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Blanche (Bownes) Hines. Rita worked for many years with HB Nickerson and later with National Sea Products in North Sydney. In earlier years, she had been an active member of Trinity Anglican Church in Sydney Mines. She enjoyed crafts, trips to the casino in Sydney and spending time with her family. She was a kind, thoughtful lady and will be sadly missed. Rita is survived by her sons, Robert (Monica) Robertson, North Sydney, David Robertson (Winnie), Moncton, NB., John (Laura) Evans, Redcliffe, Alberta; her daughter, Shirley Foster, California; by her nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, one great great grandson and by her brother Herb (Kay) Hines, Westmount, also surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Bill Robertson, her second husband, John Evans; a brother, George 'Crocker' Hines and her sisters, Jen, Alma, Nell, Mae and Yvonne. Visitation for Rita will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Monday, at Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Stacey LeMoine, officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. African Parable Gary Gardiner Born In: Glace Bay Passed on: November 27th, 2013 It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Gary Wayne Gardiner age 63 on Wednesday, November 27th, 2013 at his residence. Born in Glace Bay, Gary was the son of the late George and Violet (Slade) Gardiner. Gary will be forever loved and missed by his wife, Wendy of 40 years, his daughter, Gennifer (Troy Stubbard) and his cats, Zoro and Zack. Also surviving are his brother, Glenn (Mary) Glace Bay and his sisters, Georgette (John) MacLeod, Glace Bay, Tammy (Dennis), Beverly, Gina (Randy) Feetham and Rhonda (Steve) Ben, all of Ontario,mother- in-law, Gene and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Besides his parents, Gary was predeceased by his grandparents George and Ethel Slade and John & Hilda Gardiner, father in-law, Joseph Wilneff, brother in-law, Miles Wilneff and his niece, Angela. After leaving the construction industry, Gary worked for many years as a proud coal miner. Following the closure of Devco he worked as a locksmith with Island Lock & Safe. Gary proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces, Army Reserves for several years with the 2nd Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton) and retired honorably as a Master Corporal. Gary was a kind, caring and gentle man who made friends everywhere he went. He went above and beyond not only for his family and friends but for strangers alike. He enjoyed going on daddy-daughter day excursions, sitting by the fire, checking up on his family at Eatza Pizza, tinkering with his lanterns, going for long drives with his wife and spending time with his close friends Robert and Joe. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 2, 2013 in Newsom United Church, Dominion Street, Glace Bay with Rev. Donald J. MacDonald officiating. And while I've left out many things for which my thanks are due, I will hold them in my heart Dad... right next to my love for you Francis 'Frank' MacLellan Born In: Grand Mira Passed in: Sydney Passed on: November 28th, 2013 The death occurred of Francis Alexander 'Frank' MacLellan,at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, on Thursday, November 28, 2013. Frank was born in Grand Mira, to Angus and Elizabeth (Gillis) MacLellan. He received his early education in Grand Mira, and at Sydney Academy, then moved to Toronto, where he worked for a number of years. Frank spent 14 years with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, as a Religious Brother, serving in Ontario and British Columbia. In later years he continued working in the field of education and social work, in Mission and Langley, B.C. On retiring to Cape Breton, Frank became involved in a number of volunteer activities, including the Canadian Cancer Society, the Children's Wish Foundation, the St. Anthony Daniel Parish Men's Club, and in many other ways in which he gave of his gentle and generous nature. Frank was a 4th Degree member of the Knights Of Columbus, Council 1060, and at the time of his brief illness, held the position of District Deputy. Frank is survived by his loving wife Frances 'Fran' (Caruana), and by sisters, Sr. Rita, Antigonish, Isabel MacGillivary, South Bar, Sr. Josephine, Antigonish, sisters-in-law, Emily MacLellan, Grand Mira and Rita Pat MacLellan, Sydney. Also left to mourn are Frank's in-laws, the Caruana family, in Malta, and special friends Wayne, Donna, Hannah, and Grant Sutherland, of Tantallon NS. 'Uncle Frank' was deeply loved by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents Frank is predeceased by, brothers Donald (Annie), Martin, Vincent, Andrew, John (Patsy), and Alexander in infancy, and by sisters Annie (Jolly) Morrison, Jeanette (Laughie) Gillis, Rose (Bill) Burke, Margaret (Donald) Gillis, brother-in-law, Herb MacGillivary. Sister Marianne Exner Passed in: Antigonish, Canada Passed on: November 28th, 2013 Sister Marianne, formerly Sister Loretta Maria, 98, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, motherhouse on Thursday, November 28, 2013. She was in the 74th year of religious life. Maria Anna, the oldest of ten children of the late Isidor and Teresa (Ruher) Exner, was born in Killaly, SK. Sister Marianne entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha November 1938, and made her perpetual commitment August 1945. Sister first ministered for eleven years in household services at Bethany, and St. Martha's Convent, Antigonish; in Cape Breton, at Little Flower Institute, Bras d'Or, and St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay. Following this period, she spent forty-one years in Western Canada. There she served in the same ministries in CSM hospital institutions in Lethbridge, and Banff, AB; Regina and Melville, SK. While missioned in Calgary, AB, Sister volunteered in an outreach program. After retirement in 1985, she continued volunteering her services as homemaker or dietary assistant in Martha commuities in the west and east. Sister Marianne is survived by one brother, James. Besides her parents she was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth and Johanna; and six brothers, Anthony, Arnold, Francis Joseph, Frank, John and William. The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Sunday, December 1st at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, December 2nd at 2:00 p.m. in Bethany Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, Antigonish. Margaret 'Peggy' Brophy Born In: Sydney Born: November 16th, 1937 Passed in: Whitney Pier Passed on: November 28th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother, and wife, Peggy on Thursday, November 28, 2013, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Sydney on November 16, 1937, Peggy was the daughter of the late Cecil and Evelyn (Lively) French. Peggy's unwavering Faith in God was very evident throughout her life. Her unselfish nature, kindness and compassion made her much loved and she will be sadly missed by all those whose lives she has touched and who had the privilege of knowing her. Everyone looked forward to receiving her generous hugs which were cherished by all. Her family was the center of her life. She lived life to the fullest every day and her heart and home was open to family and friends at all times. She will always be remembered by her beautiful smile. None knew her but to love her, none named her but to praise her. Peggy will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Eric; her children, Sherry (Phillip) Nearing, Prince George, Wendy (Dougie), Sydney, Scott (Mona) Sydney, Tracey (Helen), Sydney, Brent, Dartmouth, Trevor (Cathy), Sydney. Peggy is also survived by Eric's children, Cecilia (Gene) Stanford, Toronto and Darren Brophy, Sydney and Eric's grandchildren, Kira, Katelin, Kristien, and Kassidy. Besides her parents, Peggy was predeceased by her first husband, Harry Thomas Burt, brothers, Johnnie, Bobby, Terry, Eddie, and Ronnie. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church on Monday, December 2, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Light refreshments will be served following the mass at Pier Community Funeral Home, reception area. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Azariah and Jean (Drodge) Seymour. Alvin worked as a foreman for Mason's Wholesale. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, Whitney Pier. Surviving are his daughters, Donna (Gary) Cooper, Sydney and Charlotte Aucoin, Ottawa; sons, Robert 'Bob' (Carolyn), Dingwall, Charlie (Debra), Amherst, Al (Sheila), Hamilton, Gary (Gloria), Halifax and Bill, Hamilton; brothers, Andrew (Raylene), Winnipeg, Charles (Frances), North Sydney and William (Viola), Sydney; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Alvin was predeceased by his sons, Kevin and Allen Keith (in infancy) and sister, Jemima Seymour. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church on Monday 2 p.m., with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
