'Jock' Crosby - 87 yrs Mary (McNaughton) Mark - 89 yrs Brian Farrow Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: December 20th, 2013 Brian Farrow, a former resident of Warburton Road, Gardiner Mines, passed away on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 at the Glace Bay Hospital. At the time of his passing, Brian resided at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay. Born in Gardiner Mines, Brian was the son of the late William and Mary (Mackie) Farrow. He was a former member of St. James Church, Gardiner Mines. Brian played guitar, sang country songs and was an avid dart shooter. He is survived by two sisters, Catherine Cotter, Sydney, Marilyn Farrow, Glace Bay; two nieces, Natasha Petrie, Jillian Cotter and one nephew, Jarid Cotter. No visitation, cremation has taken place. The funeral service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Fr. Dan Boudreau officiating. Rita (Burke) Bussey Born In: Little Lorraine Passed in: Glace Bay It is with deep regret that we, the family, announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Rita Bussey at the Glace Bay Hospital, Glace Bay. Born in Little Lorraine, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Theresa (Campbell) Burke. Rita enjoyed quilting, camping and traveling. She enjoyed going for drives and every time the car was leaving the yard she was in it. Rita is survived by her wonderful daughters, Darlene (John) Cathcart, Bedford, Myrchal (Joe) Campbell, Sydney; her precious grandchildren, Bryant, Michael and Jayme; her brothers, Phonse (Cora), Antigonish,Basil, Ernest (Lauria), both of Sydney; sister-in-law, Catherine 'Tiny' Burke, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Everett Bussey; sisters, Bernadine (Clarence) Perry, Betty (William) Burke, Carmella (Winfred) Bates; brothers, Ambrose and Fred. Visitation will be held Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 1:30 to 3:30 with a funeral service to follow at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Mary Snow Born In: New Waterford Born: February 25th, 1925 Passed in: Oromocto, New Brunswick, Canada Passed on: December 19th, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary (Grant) Snow from Oromocto, N.B. Mary was born on Feb. 9, 1925 in New Waterford, Cape Breton and was predeceased by her parents, Angus and Elizabeth Grant. Mary was the second youngest of a family of eight children who have gone before her. John, Tom, Alex, Bernie, Kaye, Elizabeth, Lillian and Lee welcomed her on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013. Mary is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Cecil and she rejoiced in their 68 year marriage. She was fiercely proud of her three boys, Jim, Robert and Danny and loved each of their wives, Sheila, Karen and Peggy. She had six grandchildren, Jason, Robert, Daniel, Devon, Cameron and Liam. She had one great-grandchild, Maria. Mary was an active and proud member of St. Vincent de Paul parish in Oromocto where she sang in the choir, taught religious education, was a member of the bereavement team, spent two terms on the parish counsel and was a member of the CWL for 40 plus years. On her behalf she had asked us to thank the extramural nurses who provided supportive home care. Also special thanks to her family physician Dr. Cathy Woods who provided Mary and the family with loving support and care. There are no words to express Mary's and the family's gratitude to their best friend Father Ken Weir. She will always be remembered and dearly missed by a family that has lost their matriarch who made family and also her many friends feel special. Visitation will be held at Oromocto Funeral Home, 108 Winnebago St., on Sunday, Dec. 22 from 2-6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 at 2 p.m. with Fr. Ken Weir officiating. A reception will follow the mass. Interment will take place in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery in the spring. Catherine 'Minnie' (White) Luker Born In: Bras d'Or Born: May 18th, 1929 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: December 18th, 2013 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Catherine 'Minnie' Luker, 84, a lifelong resident of Bras d'Or, on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at the Northside General Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Born in Bras d'Or on May 18, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Harriet (Laffin) White. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Bras d'Or. Catherine worked on the Great Lakes, and in her father's store, 'White's Canteen' in Bras d'Or around the late 50s and 60s. She cared for both her parents until their deaths. Catherine is survived by her daughter, Priscilla MacIver, Bras d'Or; sister, Thelma Harrietha, Bras d'Or; five grandchildren, Michelle (Mark) Masson, Lisa (Marcus)Brau, April MacIver, J.J. MacIver, all of Calgary and Cheryl (Vince) Bernicot, Three Hills, Alta.; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn are a special niece, Heather (Junior) Barton, Fort McMurray; special friend and cousin Jeannie Arsenault, St. James Rd.; special niece, Marguerite White, Bras d'Or, who looked after her for four years, several nieces, nephews and cousins, sisters and brothers-in-law, Gwen Tobin, Millville, Mina White, Bras d'Or, Margaret White, Sydney Mines, Al Saunders, Markham, Ont. and Roy Barton, London, Ont. Besides her parents, Catherine was predeceased by her husband, Gilbert Luker; sisters, Mary, Katie, Harriet and Frances, and brothers, George, William, Henry, Gordon, James and Johnny. Special thank you to Dr. Knott, the nursing staff on 5 West and 2 East, and all the sitters. Visitation for Catherine Luker will be held in the J. M. John 'Jock' Crosby Born In: Dominion Passed on: December 19th, 2013 Our beloved Jockey died peacefully with Hawley and Elizabeth by his side on Dec. 19, 2013, after a brief illness, at the age of 87. Born in Dominion, N.S., he was the son of Andrew and Bridget (Graham) Crosby. He was a graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1950, and throughout his life demonstrated the kindness and caring of that profession. He had a 32-year career with the Department of Veteran's Affairs in Sydney, and was a devoted advocate for those he served in that role. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (nee Hawley); his only daughter, Hawley, her husband Tom Smith, and his darling granddaughter, Olivia Smith. He was the favourite uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson, John Smith. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, predeceased by sisters, Margie McEachern, Annie Stephens and Katie McLeod and brothers, Adam, Graham, and Bobby. He was the heart of the Crosby and Hawley families, always interested, ready to lend a sympathetic ear, to share a laugh or a drink. He was a gentle and humble soul, but full of mischief. "Who has more fun than people" was his motto. His family is grateful to staff of the Glace Bay General Hospital for their tender care in his final weeks. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Curry's Funeral Home, Main Street, Glace Bay. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014. Mary (McNaughton) Mark Born In: Stirling Scotland, United Kingdom Born: September 27th, 1924 Passed in: St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada Passed on: December 14th, 2013 Mary Mark passed peacefully away in her sleep at the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013 in St. John's, Nfld. at the age of 89. Born in Stirling, Scotland Sept. 27, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Hannah (Brimer) McNaughton. Mary was predeceased by her husband Lachlan J. Mark; son, John; grandsons, Jason and Fraser; one sister and five brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Dianne (Duncan), St. John's; grandsons, Lachlan (Holly), Manitoba, Joel (Sherry), Nova Scotia; five great-grandchildren, Brett, Matthew, Shelby, Ashton, and Maggie; daughter-in-law, Tina MacPherson, Nova Scotia; brother-in-law, Brian (Evelyn), Ontario; sisters-in-law, Ada and Betty in Scotland and Jenny in Australia; many other relatives in Canada, Scotland and Australia and friends in Newfoundland and Cape Breton. After serving in the WAAF in the Second World War, Mary emigrated to Canada with her husband and young son in 1952 and made Glace Bay her home, moving to St. John's a couple of years ago to be closer to her daughter. She will always be remembered as a loving, caring, strong and independent person who loved a good laugh. Having an avid sense of adventure, she enjoyed travelling the back roads of Cape Breton with her husband. Her hobbies included gardening, woodworking, sewing and knitting. She was a volunteer at the Town House in Glace Bay and an adherent to St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. Loyal to family and friends, Ma and Grandma gave us lots of great memories and she will be missed. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all staff at the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion for their excellent care and friendship over the past couple of years. A heartfelt thank you is extended to the Cumbie and Richards families for their kindness and generosity. At Mary's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation.
