Neil was born in Cambridge, Ont., the son of Raylene (Burton) McKinnon and the late Neil B. McKinnon. Neil served for the Department of National Defense, Canadian Armed Forces, as a firefighter. He graduated from the Canadian Recruit School, CFB Cornwallis with honorable mention for Skill at Arms. He was stationed in CFB Greenwood for many years. Early in his career, Neil was a member of the Department of National Defense, Reserve Unit, Cape Breton Highlanders as an Infanteer. Upon transitioning from an active member of the Canadian Armed Forces to a veteran, Neil's desire to continue to serve his community compelled him to offer his services to the North Sydney Volunteer Fire Department. His passion for serving and protecting was a reflection of his career choice and lifestyle. His courageous personality formed the basis of his life and his dedication to his family was steadfast. In his earlier years, Neil was a member of the 21st. Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada Army Cadet Corps, located in Cambridge, Ont. Sharing a love of hockey with his father, Neil played for the Tillsonburg Ontario Minor Hockey Association, AAA league. Neil is survived by his son Nathen McKinnon and daughter Amber McKinnon; his mother Raylene (Burton) McKinnon; his sister Catherine McKinnon, his niece Kaitland McKinnon and nephew Christopher Power and many aunts and uncles. Neil was predeceased by his father Neil Bernard McKinnon, his paternal and maternal grandparents and his cousin Robert Millard. Visitation for Neil will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4 in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Patrick O'Neill officiating. Fraser Oakley Born In: Quarry St. Anns Passed in: Baddeck Passed on: December 1st, 2013 It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of Fraser Oakley, on Dec.1 , 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Quarry, St. Anns, he was the son of the late Lindsay and Annie (Morrison) Oakley. Fraser was born and raised in Cape Breton, and moved to Sudbury, Ont. to work in the INCO nickel mines, where he retired in 1985, with 33 years of service. He returned to Cape Breton in 1990, where he married Ella (MacLeod) and has resided there for the last 23 years. Fraser was an elder of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and also a member of the Gaelic choir for many years. Fraser was well known, well respected, and will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife Ella. Loving father of Chris (Mary) MacDonald, Debra (Richard) O'Brien, Barbara (Denis) Pharand, Gary, Cindy (Garry) Shyminsky, Peter (Joanne), also survived by 19 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. Stepfather to Ian (Cathy) MacLeod and Kathy (Bernie) MacLeod, also five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Beloved brother of Ruth Morrison. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn is brother-in-law Jack (Suzie) Carr, and sister-in-law, Mary Oakley. Fraser was predeceased by his wife, Irene (Carr) and daughter, Mary Lamothe, brother, George, and sister, Catherine Kerr. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Heussein, Dr. Chow, Dr. Gange, Dr. Ritter and staff of the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, for their exceptional care and kindness. Ernest Francis 'Ernie Buck' Carey Born In: Bras d'Or Passed in: Florence Passed on: November 28th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts, we regretfully announce the passing of Ernie 'Buck' on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He fought hard against cancer, and showed everyone he was going to pass the same way he lived; In his own way and on his own terms, which he did, with the constant love and support of his friends and relatives. Born in Bras d'Or, he was the loving son of Muriel (Long) and the late Robert Carey. Ernie happily worked hard at Hilltop Alignment for 30 years with his lifetime friend and honorary brother Adrain Blinkhorn. He was a people person he will be missed by so many (young and old) because he left an impression on everyone he met either by helping them out or just by making them laugh (his specialty). He was everybody's friend. The Bucker always had a smile and an amazing story to share. It is our hope that these stories and memories live on. Besides his mother, he leaves behind (the love of his life) his wife of 35 years, Sharon (Buffett); sons, (who always made him proud), Curtis (Tara), Miramichi, N.B., and Jason (Megan), at home; sisters, Gloria (Ernie) Confiant, Brampton, Ont., Verna (Bernie), Bell Island, N.L., Pammie (Donnie), Sydney, Rossie (Peter) Forrest, Florence, Nancy (Leroy) Pyke, Dartmouth. Ernie was very proud of his family and leaving them proved to be the hardest thing he would ever do. Ernie will also be missed by the Buffett family, Barry (Francis), Cecil (Edie), Bernie (Deanna), Yvonne, Joan (Sandy), Earl, Mary, Cameron (Doreen), Olive (Bob) Joanne (Greg) and Wayne as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Ernie will be lovingly greeted by his family that have gone before him, his father Robert, and brothers, Kenny and Rickey. There will be no visitation. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joshua and Janet (Blagdon) Rose. Irene is survived by sister, Lillian (Robert) MacDonald. She was predeceased by sisters, Pearl, Audrey and Marie, brothers, John, Gerald, George, Thomas, Vincent, Murray and Bobby. Henry Harvey Boutilier Born In: Wadden's Cove Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: November 30th, 2013 The family regrets to announce the passing of Henry Harvey Boutilier, 80, on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at his home. Da was born in Wadden's Cove, the son of the late John James and Florence (Watson) Boutilier. Da worked as a coal miner for the Cape Breton Development Corporation. Da was well-known in the areas of boxing, baseball and music. Da was an idea man; for example, he was the man who first promoted the idea of the Renwick Brook Walking Trail. He also promoted the idea of the lights at the South Street Ball Park. Da was manager of the Lords Miners, the 1972 Nova Scotia Senior Baseball Champions. Da also managed the Glace Bay Mark Ten to the 1975 Atlantic Junior Baseball Championship and the 1976 Nova Scotia Championship. In later years, he was a gardener and he spent time travelling to Wadden's Cove and meeting friends at Mickey's barber shop. Da was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church. Da is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joyce (Parsons) Boutilier, whom he idolized; sons, Henry (Cynthia) and Darryl (Heather); daughters, Gail (Robert) Sheppard, Barbara Jean (Billy) Gillis, Anita (Lewis) Boutilier, Winnie MacNeil, April (Ken) Ferguson and daughter-in-law, Colleen; sister, Edith MacKenzie and brother, Bobby Boutilier. Da was predeceased by his son, Edison, son-in-law, Gerald MacNeil and granddaughter, Lynda Boutilier, sisters, Charlotte, Shirley, Bessie, Florence and brothers, Billy, George, Albert, Levi, Charlie, Eldon and Cecil. Da will be sadly missed by his 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren whom all lovingly referred to him as Henry B. Joseph Patrick 'Smokey Joe' McNeil Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: November 30th, 2013 It is with sadness we announce the passing of Joseph Patrick McNeil, 88, formerly of New Aberdeen and a resident of Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home. Joe passed away on Nov. 30, 2013, at the nursing home with his family at his side. Born in Glace Bay, Joe was the son of the late Hector and Euphemia (Shanks) McNeil. Joe was employed with Devco working in mines #20 and #26 retiring after 45 years of service. Joe will be sadly missed by daughters, Catherine, Anna Marie (Peter) Slaunwhite; sons, Daniel (Sheila), Hector, Billy (Lisa); special cousin, Jovita Prince; six grandsons; seven granddaughters and several great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his loving wife, Jane (Rogers) McNeil, grandson, Billy, brothers, Jim, Morris, Tommy, Walter and a sister, Delores. The family would like to thank everyone at Taigh Na Mara for the wonderful care Joe received over the years. Elvira Marlena Wihterall Born In: Koln Germany Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: November 28th, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister , Elvira Marlena Witherall, 72, on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Elvira was born in Koln, Germany, she immigrated to Canada at the age of 23. She lived in Ontario for a number of years moving to Cape Breton in 1991. She loved cleaning and doing her housework and especially spending time with grandchildren. Elvira is survived by her husband, Henry Witherall; her daughter, Tanya Witherall; three grandchildren, Kaiya Witherall, Mila and Pria Marks, also by her brother and three sisters in Germany.
