Born in Edwardsville, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Flora (Stewart) Morrison. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She loved spending time with here family and friends, her loving feline friends, her drives in the country and Chelic. Pearl is survived by her niece and caregiver, Florence (Sheldon) Chant, Sydney; niece, Karen (David) Burke, Truro. She is also survived by four grand nieces and three grandnephews, as well as several great nieces and nephews and longtime family friend Ron MacDonald, North Sydney. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Hughie, her sisters, Lena, Ethel, Irene and Greta, brothers, Steward, Weston, Steward 'Dooie', niece, Phyllis and nephew, Danny. Grace MacDonald Passed in: Florence Passed on: December 18th, 2013 With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Grace MacDonald at the Northside General Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, after a brief illness. Born in Alder Point, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Helen Thurbide. Grace is survived by her children, Douglas St. Catharines, Ont., Sharon (Brian) Stevens, Bridgewater, Barbara (Joe) Gracie, Millville, Ronnie (Joan), Vancouver, B.C., Peter (Debbie), Guelph, Ont., Yvonne (Bill), Florence, and Anna, at home. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her siblings, Reggie, Mill Creek, Hilda Harrietha, Mill Creek, Millie MacLean, Alder Point, and a special sister-in-law, Mae Boutilier, Little Pond. Lucy Jean (Jane) MacLean Passed on: December 18th, 2013 Lucy Jean (Jane) MacLean passed away peacefully the evening of Dec. 18, 2013. During the day she was surrounded by the love and caring of her niece Valerie and husband Stan Poirier. Jane was sent on her way to join her husband John Hugh (December, 1991) with words of comfort and faith by Fr. Bedford Doucette. Jane was born in Margaree, October, 1922 to parents Leo and Delena (Aucoin) LeBlanc and left that area as a young girl relocating to Glace Bay. She was a switchboard operator for Dominion Coal Company and Martime Tel&Tel. After her marriage to Hughie in 1954 she had to leave her employment because married women where not permitted to work. Jane continued to work in the area, doing domestic work for many families who appreciated all her efforts. Jane is lovingly survived by her sister Margaret in Halifax, 40 nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Jane was predeceased by her sisters, Cecilia, Bernice and brothers Alphonse and Henry. Also, grandnephews Bernard LeBlanc, Darryl Petrie, Warren Poirier and D.J. Cameron- Petrie. Jane was a resident of Reserve Mines for 44 years, Highland Court Seniors, New Waterford for two years and enjoyed the love and care from the staff from Alderwood Nursing Home in Baddeck and recently, the Cove Nursing Home in Sydney. Jane was a member of St. Joseph's CWL for 21 years and also parishioner of St. Joseph's parish. After Hughie passed away, Jane eagerly became involved in her parish helping out with funeral receptions, fundraising activities and Tuesday bowling and crafts with the girls. Jane was a great baker and was famous for her butterscotch pies made from scratch. Some of her many talents, were knitting mittens, sewing Halloween costumes and crocheting beautiful doilies. Jane loved her cat Ginger who was a great comfort to her after the loss of Hughie and she also loved her garden. Visitation will take place at St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines, Dec. 21, from 10-11 a.m. Funeral mass will follow at 11:15 a.m. The Rev Danny Boudreau will be officiaiting. Born in Sydney, Sandy was the son of the late David and Theresa (Martenello) MacIsaac. Sandy worked for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for 32 years, retiring in 2007. Phyllis Strickey Passed in: Sydney Passed on: December 18th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Phyllis Strickey early Wednesday morning, Dec. 18, 2013. She was a resident of Harbourstone Enhanced Care where she lived out her lengthy and enthusiastic life until her final breath, just shy of her 99th birthday. Phyllis was the daughter of the late Philip Walsh and Stella (Richardson). Phyllis is survived by her only daughter, Sondra Kennedy (John Kennedy) and her four grandchildren, Vince Kennedy (Ann Marie), Ontario, David Kennedy (Cathy), Ontario, Derek Kennedy (Ellie), Reserve, and Carol Rizzetto (Gilbert), Coxheath; 12 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Phyllis also leaves behind a niece, Joy Doyle (Bill) and her three children, as well as her cherished sister-in-law, Jean Walsh. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, John Strickey, brother, Harry Walsh and two great- grandchildren, Johnny Kennedy and Sondra Rizzetto. Phyllis spent the majority of her married life raising her daughter in South Bar. She was a card shark and a knitting machine, making sweaters for those she loved that will remain in our families forever. The cherished "Great Nan" was delighted with the chance to babysit whoever was lucky enough to be dropped off at her door. Everyone left her house smiling and full to the brim with her unbeatable home cooking and delicious sweets. Her Christmas baking made our holidays special and will be carried on through the generations ... especially her gingerbread men and maids of honors. We would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff in the 'St. Ann's Bay Ward' for treating Phyllis like your own family. Born in Sydney River, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of Margaret V. (Carmichael) LeVatte and Harry C.V. LeVatte. She attended Holy Angels Convent in Sydney and worked at LeVatte Construction Company. She was an active member of the IODE and volunteered with young children and MS Research. Our mother's passion was to find a cure for MS, of which she had for 47 years. She was always seen with a smile on her face and kindness in her heart. Family and friends we will deeply miss her and know she is at peace. Survived by daughter, Jane C. (Byron Smith) Macintosh, Calgary, Alta.; son, Ian F. Anna Martinello Passed on: December 15th, 2013 Anna Martinello, of Sydney, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 following a brief illness. Anna was the daughter of the late Ivan and Maria (Klemkovich) Melnyk. She is survived by and will be deeply missed by her only daughter, Shirley Grinnell and son-in-law, Dale; granddaughter, Renée (Damian) Capozzola and great-grandchildren, Donovan and Dean, all of California. Anna was predeceased by her husband Louis, six brothers Joseph, Nicholas, Peter, Paul, John and Michael and one sister, Sonia Banfield. She was the last surviving member of her family. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her. Anna led a very active life and was involved in several charitable organizations. She was past president of St. Rita's Hospital Auxilary and a member of St. Theresa's CWL for over 40 years. She was a member of the Lingan Golf & Country Club for many years and also belonged to the Curling Club. Anna was also very active in the Ukrainian Women's Club and served on their executive board. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed travelling with her family for many years. In addition, she was a fantastic cook and everyone looked forward to her exceptional meals. Fred was one of 15 children born to the late George and Rose (Strickland) Steele. Fred was proud of the fact that he pursued many trades during his lifetime. He worked for Lipton Auto Parts for 20 years before working as chief engineer on the dragger boat "The Lady Maria". He worked as a carpenter, a burner and finally as a fisherman before he retired. Fred had many fond memories of spending time with his brother, Jim, at their trailer near Baddeck on Yankee Line where they spent their time fishing, hunting and enjoying peaceful times. Fred will be dearly missed by his daughter, Andrea Remington-Steele (Mike), who was his loving care giver for 26 years, and by his daughter, Michelle Steele, both of Glace Bay, daughter Marion Cole of Hamilton, Ont. and his son, Fabian 'Berkie' McPhee, Victoria, B.C. Also left to mourn are his brother, Bob and sister, Rose. He was a loving Poppa to his seven grandchildren, Richard, Andrew, Jamie Lee, Bria, Bryson, Erikia, and Ellerie and Tina Louise (deceased). He will be missed by his special companion and furry friend Poppa's dog "Maddie Moo". Fred was predeceased by 13 siblings including very special brother and best friend, James Louis Steele. James Bailey Born In: Sydney Mines Born: November 14th, 1920 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: December 19th, 2013 It is with saddened heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, James Guy Bailey, on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Sydney Mines on Nov. 14, 1920, he was the son of the late George Frederick and Elizabeth (Parsons) Bailey. He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. He was the last surviving member of a family of seventeen. James Guy Bailey was a veteran of the Second World War, serving five years overseas in Italy, Sicily, Ortona, France, Belgium, Holland and England. He also signed up for Japan before the war ended. He was honoured with eight medals; The Canadian Volunteer Medal and Clasp, The 1939-1945 Star, The France and Germany Star, The Dutch Freedom Medal in 2006, The Canadian 250 Medal, The Defence Medal, and The Meritorious Medal with Palm Leaf. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 008, Sydney Mines. After coming home from overseas, he was a Staff Sergeant Instructor of the R.C.A. artillery training in North Sydney and Aldershot. He also sailed on the Great Lakes, and drove Vets Taxi for many years. He owned and operated two small grocery stores in Sydney Mines. He worked at the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission for 19 years, until his retirement. Over the years, he enjoyed horse races, fishing, and many drives in the truck with his son, Kevin. He had a great talent for playing the accordion and the harmonica. We had him for so long, and he will be missed by all those who loved him. He was energetic up to his death. He is survived by his loving, wonderful wife of 68 years, Jessie (Childs) Bailey. Also left to mourn are his five children, Elizabeth Swan, Elaine Boutilier (Joseph), Lawrence Bailey (Yvonne), Kevin Bailey, and Debbie Pyke (Gary), 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; son-in-law, Austin Kendall; many nieces and nephews and many wonderful brothers and sisters-in-law, originating from Newfoundland. John 15:13 Mary (McNaughton) Mark Born In: Stirling Scotland, United Kingdom Born: September 27th, 1924 Passed in: St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada Passed on: December 14th, 2013 Mary Mark passed peacefully away in her sleep at the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013 in St. John's, Nfld. at the age of 89. Born in Stirling, Scotland Sept. 27, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Hannah (Brimer) McNaughton. Mary was predeceased by her husband Lachlan J. Mark; son, John; grandsons, Jason and Fraser; one sister and five brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Dianne (Duncan), St. John's; grandsons, Lachlan (Holly), Manitoba, Joel (Sherry), Nova Scotia; five great-grandchildren, Brett, Matthew, Shelby, Ashton, and Maggie; daughter-in-law, Tina MacPherson, Nova Scotia; brother-in-law, Brian (Evelyn), Ontario; sisters-in-law, Ada and Betty in Scotland and Jenny in Australia; many other relatives in Canada, Scotland and Australia and friends in Newfoundland and Cape Breton. After serving in the WAAF in the Second World War, Mary emigrated to Canada with her husband and young son in 1952 and made Glace Bay her home, moving to St. John's a couple of years ago to be closer to her daughter. She will always be remembered as a loving, caring, strong and independent person who loved a good laugh. Having an avid sense of adventure, she enjoyed travelling the back roads of Cape Breton with her husband. Her hobbies included gardening, woodworking, sewing and knitting. She was a volunteer at the Town House in Glace Bay and an adherent to St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. Loyal to family and friends, Ma and Grandma gave us lots of great memories and she will be missed. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all staff at the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion for their excellent care and friendship over the past couple of years. A heartfelt thank you is extended to the Cumbie and Richards families for their kindness and generosity. At Mary's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation.
