Born in Glace Bay, Penelope was the daughter of the late William and Penelope (O'Regan) Currie. Penelope grew up in New Aberdeen and went on to pursue a career in teaching. She taught at Gannon Road School, Sydney Mines, and St. Anne's School, Glace Bay, until early retirement due to health issues. Penelope was a beautiful singer and in her early years would sing mass at St. John's Church. She had a passion for logic problem puzzles, enjoyed watching the Blue Jays and Nancy Grace. She was also well known in the community for her fortune-telling abilities. Never a person to shy away from a good debate as she loved to express her views on world problems. But her greatest love of all were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who she doted on and they loved listening to Ba's stories of the old days. She will be sadly missed by her loving children, Deborah (Bradley) Reid, Dominion, William Jr. (Anita), Glace Bay; sisters, Bernice (Currie) Jim, Sydney, Catherine (Charlie Browner), Dominion, Valentina Hall (Gerald), Glace Bay; brothers, Francis (Shirley) Currie, Ignatius (Jackie) Currie, David (Margaret) Currie, Glace Bay; sister-in-law, Dorothy 'Dot' Murphy, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Ashley (Bruce Strong), Holly Reid (Matthew) and Clinton Reid, Dominion, Brady and Johnathan Cox, Glace Bay; step-grandchildren, Stephanie, Shaylene, Alexander Budden, Glace Bay; great-grandchildren, Gracie, Nicholas and Joshua Strong, Dominion; numerous nieces and nephews, who all loved her wit and humour. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William, brothers, William and Joseph, sister, Mary. At Penelope's request cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. The family will have a private funeral service at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. The interment will be at a later date. Theresa MacIsaac Born In: Sydney Born: February 25th, 1912 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: December 8th, 2013 Theresa MacIsaac, age 101, passed away at the MacGillvray Guest Home on Sunday, December 8, 2013. Born in Sydney on February 25, 1912 she was the daughter of the late Michael and Anita (Sataeu) Martinello. She was a member of Sacred Heart parish, Sydney. Theresa was a person who loved knitting, cooking and crafts as well as years ago, being an avid bridge player with her many friends. She is survived by sons Arthur (Carol Ann), Ottawa, David 'Buddy' (Jenny), Sydney, Ronald (Mary), Dartmouth, and Alex (Bernice), Glace Bay. Theresa will be greatly missed by her 12 grandchildren Bobby, Keith, Carolyn, Carol Ann, Diane, Kenny, Jennifer, Susanne, Scott, Jamie, Alison, and Blair; also 16 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter and sister-in-law Annie Martinello. Besides her parents, Theresa was predeceased by her husband David in1986; brothers Andrew, Louie, and Edward, and sisters Rita Smith and Violet Richards. She was also predeceased by a grandson, David. As per Theresa's wishes, there will be no visitation; the funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Sydney, with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Donald 'Jim' Read Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: December 9th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts and deepest sorrow that we announce the death of Donald Read who passed peacefully at home on Monday, December 9, 2013. Born in NFLD he is survived by his daughter Stephanie (John Woodfine), Sydney Mines; brothers Vernon (Deanna), Montreal, George (Annie), Little Pond, Frank (Caroline), Lower Scakville, Ronnie (Sheila) Yarmouth as well as two grandchildren; Nicole and Kristi Gerrow and many neices and nephews. Jim is predeceased by his parents Percy and Laura Read; wife Christina (Teeny) Read; son Donald; brothers Calvin and Albert and his sister Lillian Read. As per Jim's request there will be no service. "You will be forever loved and missed" Robert 'Jimmy' Lund Passed in: Marion Bridge Passed on: December 9th, 2013 Robert James Lund, a long-time resident of Dutch Brook, who, for the past four years, resided with his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Terry Peters of Marion Bridge, passed away Monday, December 9, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. He was an adherent of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney. A welder by trade, Jimmy worked at Sydney Steel for 42 years. He enjoyed working on cars in his garage, fishing in Wreck Cove and snowmobiling with his many friends. Jimmy is survived by his daughters, Lillian (Chester) and Debbie (Terry) Peters, Marion Bridge and sons, Joseph 'Bobby' (Estelle), Howie Centre and Gerald (Bill), Sydney River. He had a special place in his heart for his two grandsons, Jason (Terri-Lynn) Lund and Chris (Tammy) Peters, as well as his great-grandchildren, Brandon Zablaska, Kyla and Chloe Lund and Brady and Cassidy Peters and Jamie Lynn Oakley. Jimmy also leaves behind his siblings, Marg Reid, Connie Ireland, Joyce Keigan and brother, Donnie. Besides his parents, Robert and Effie (Hanson) Lund, Jimmy was predeceased by his loving wife, Evelyn, sister, Florence and brothers, Edward, John, Gerry, Billy and Earl. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church on Friday 11 a.m., with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail [email protected] Mamie MacKenzie Born In: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Born: March 8th, 1914 Passed in: Pictou Passed on: December 7th, 2013 It is with sadness that we announce the death of our mother, sister, aunt and friend on Saturday, December 7, 2013 in Pictou at the Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou, where she resided for the last four years. She formerly lived in Antigonish and Halifax. Born in Antigonish on March 8, 1914, she was the eldest of eight children of the late Aubrey and Lillian (Crittenden) Williams of Mulgrave. She will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by her daughter Judith and son-in-law David Trumbo of Pictou. She married John Hugh MacKenzie of Christmas Island in Toronto on September 1, 1941 and graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, Glace Bay, in 1942. Mamie moved to Pictou in 1998 to be closer to her mother and her sisters. Surviving are her sisters Irene Brydges, Pictou, NS and Shirley Picken, Hamilton, ON; brother Gary (Norah) of Qualicum Beach, BC, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by John Hugh on February 29, 1988; sisters Mona Higgins, Bernice Williams and brothers Sumner and Earle. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at C.L. Curry Funeral Home, Antigonish on Thursday, December 12 from 11 a.m. until time of funeral at 1 p.m. in St. Ninian's Cathedral with Father Martin MacDougall presiding. Clifford Mader Born In: Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada Born: August 7th, 1923 Passed in: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Passed on: December 5th, 2013 It is with sadness that we announce the death of Clifford Douglas Mader on December 5, 2013. Born in Sydney Nova Scotia, he spent most of his life there and moved to Edmonton in 2003 to be closer to family. He coached a number of young people in hockey, baseball and track, winning many local and provincial titles. Cliff loved horses and for a time owned some quarter horses that he raced in Nova Scotia and PEI. He was involved in the forming of CUPE in 1963 and became the first president of the eastern region. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War and was very proud of the service he performed for his country. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Emily, as well as his children, Chris (Syd) Wentzell, Nadine Sturko, Richard Mader, Dorothy (Colin) Isted, Gail (David) Butler, Gary (Toni) Mader and Nancy (Roger) Belanger. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Clifford in 2010. Funeral Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints, 10980-142 Street, Edmonton, on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 11:30 am.
