He was the son of Fred Polegato and Rosella (Murphy) Polegato. He owned and operated Polegato Landscaping for 20 years until his retirement. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 58 years, Ann (Dwyer) Polegato; his six children, Jimmy (Donna), Alberta, Debbie (Wally), Edmonton, Jean, Fort McMurry, Gerard (Martha), Glace Bay, Lynn and Marie (Dave), Dominion, as well as his 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Delores and Virginia, St.Catherine, Ont., and brothers, John, St. Catherine, Ont., Bruno, Marion Bridge; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Polegato, Louisdale, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Geno and Fred. A very special thank you to Dr. Glen Worth for his special care of Wally, as well as the nurses and staff at Regional Hospital, 4C. Cremation has taken place. Born in Glace Bay he was the son of the late Jennie and Tom Morgan. Allan is survived by daughters Debbie (Brian) Gracie, Valerie (Doug) Clark, Donna Lawrence; sons Jamie(Doug) Morgan, Gerald Morgan; grandchildren Angie, Deborah-Lynn, T.J., Morgan and Allie; also two great grandchildren; brother Donnie (Florence) and sisters Linda and Edith. Besides his parents Allan is predeceased by his wife Marcella; sister Muriel; brothers Darrel and Freddy. Allan worked for over 40 years as a coal miner where he was also known as 'Duck' by his many friends and coworkers. He loved to watch both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the WWE. There will be no visitation cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home. Online condolence Shannon Parsons (Butler) Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: December 13th, 2013 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of heaven's newest angel, our wife, mom and sister, Shannon Colette Parsons, who passed away Friday December 13, 2013 surrounded by friends and family. She was a devoted and active member of St Anne's Parish and had a great passion for the CWL. Shannon was a graduate of the St Joseph's School of Nursing (1960) and an active member of their alumni. Shannon worked as an RN at the St Joseph Community Hospital in her early career and later as a Diabetes Educator. She was an avid square dancer and enjoyed the friendship of many wonderful people over the past twenty-eight years. She was a member of the Town and Country Square Dancers and the Bluenose RV Squares. She loved nothing more than packing up the camper and heading out for the weekend to share some dancing, laughter and friendship. She will be sadly missed by her many friends across the province and country. Shannon is survived by her husband of 49 years, Lionel; her two daughters Marlene Battson (Michael), Colette Smith (Bill) and her son Trevor (Gretchen). She adored her four grandchildren Jonathan and Christine Smith and Elise and Abigail Battson and enjoyed watching them grow. Shannon had an extended family that includes five surviving sisters, Marie Bigley (Jay), Helen Butler (Bob Lynk), Rita MacLean (Fred), Sister Joan Butler, Sisters of Charity, Susan Nearing (Joe) and two brothers Jerry (Fonda) and Stephen (Paula) and her sister-in-law Gloria MacLeod. She has many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. She will also be missed by her life-long and dear friend, Mary Lou Browner. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother John and his wife Lois. Visitation will take place on Monday December 16, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass with be celebrated at St Anne's Church on Tuesday December 17, 2013 at 2 p.m. with Rev Leo Boone officiating. A private internment ceremony will take place at a later date. McAskill at the age of 65, at Breton Ability Centre, Sydney on December 12, 2013. Born in New Waterford, he leaves to cherish his memory, brothers Eddy (Debbie), Charlie (Eloise); sisters Helen (Marcel), Jean, Dolena; numerous nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Kathleen. Gladys 'Merle' Naddaf Born In: Wareham Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: December 12th, 2013 With deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Gladys Merle Naddaf, age 89, on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at her home. Born in Wareham, England, Merle was the daughter of the late Frederick and Beatrice (Marshallsay) Cornish. She was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the British Army. Merle was a war bride, having met her husband Moses Naddaf while overseas and married before returning to North Sydney. She worked for many years as a personal care worker at MacGillivray Guest Home in Sydney until her retirement. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Those who knew mom will remember her for her wisdom, wit, honesty, generosity of spirit, remarkable memory and a passion for books. To us, she was the very best a mother could be and we will miss her terribly. She is survived by her two sons, Joe, North Sydney, Michael (Aileen Neil), Groves Point; her two daughters, Janet Jessome and Beverly (Frank) Yurczyszyn, both of North Sydney; her six grandchildren, Gerard, Tammy, Michelle, Andrew, Stephen, Ashley and four great-grandchildren, Cayleigh, Victoria, Colby and Gabriel. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Mary Naddaf, North Sydney, and a number of nieces and nephews. Merle was predeceased by her husband, Moses Naddaf; two infant children, Andrew and Mary and her sister, Pamela Vervaet. There will be no visitation by request. Georgina (Fowler) Neville Passed in: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Passed on: December 8th, 2013 Peacefully, following a long and courageous battle with cancer, at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus with her loving family by her side on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013 at the age of 44 years. Everett Cann Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: December 10th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Everett Cann Sr., at the age of 76, on Dec. 10, 2013, at the Glace Bay Hospital, surrounded by family. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Georgina (Andrews) Cann. He was a devoted member of St. Anthony's parish, where both he and his wife, the late Alice (MacNeil) Cann will be remembered for their passionate involvement to both the community and the church through their music. Everett directed both men and boy's choirs in the early 60s and 70s. When the Vatican VI was formed he also directed congregational singing. He was a well known musician, starting his musical career as a drummer with the late Buddy Pickup Orchestra in the 1950s. He later studied saxophone and took lessons from the late Gib Whitney. He then formed his own band in the early 60s called the Everett Cann Orchestra, where he performed in many establishments across the island. To name a few, Branch #40 Legion, Passchendale, Port Morien Legion and Donkin Legion. Everett was an associate member of Branch #40 Legion under his father's number. He was also past president of that branch and served many years as 1st vice president. He also served on the board of directors of the MacIntyre Credit Union when it was in operation in the Passchendale area. He along with Fr. Joseph Coté formed what is known as the Coté Housing Group. He was custodian of Saint Anthony's School, a position he held for 30 years until he retired in 1989. He held the position of president for the Cape Breton Musician's Association for six years and was a member of the first board of directors in 1966. He was also a lifetime member with that association. He also entertained people as a popular Master of Ceremonies. He was past president of Local 760 with the Canadian Union of Public Employees. Everett is survived by his three sons, Everett Allan (Margie), Craig (Michelle McNeil) and Todd; seven grandchildren, Melanie (Stephen), Lakin, Mallory, Robert (Courtney), Meaghan (Derrick), Devon and Nathan. Three great-grandchildren, Kendra, Drayah and Cooper; brother, Bryant (Rhoda); sister, Clair; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice (MacNeil); two sisters, Verba and Louella and brother-in-law, Neil MacLean. Everett will also be sadly missed by Donna Hedd, Wendy Ferguson and Michelle Drake. Visiation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17 at Curry's Funeral Home, Main Street, Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated with Fr. Frederick Chislett Born In: North Sydney Passed in: Ontario Passed on: December 13th, 2013 We, the family, sadly announce the passing of Fred on Dec. 13, 2013, after a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late Frederick Chislett and Adeliene Chislett-Gracie. He was predeceased by brother, Lloyd; stepfather, Stan Gracie; stepbrother and sister, Steven and Marie. He is survived by his wife, Lois; son, Brian and daughter, Patricia and their families; brothers, Clarence (Agnes), New Brunswick, Gary (Marcella), Sydney Mines, Dave (Patricia), William (Chris); sisters, Marilyn (Steve) and Cathy (Steve); all in Ontario. Also stepsisters, Marilyn Thomas, Westmount, Jen and stepbrothers, Stanly, Jackie and Howard, all in Ontario. A private family funeral will be held in Ontario. Sr. Florence Morrison Born In: Cleveland Passed in: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: December 12th, 2013 Sister Florence Morrison, formerly Sister Joseph Andrew, 94, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013. She was in the 73rd year of religious life. Born in Cleveland, N.S., Sister Florence was the eighth in a family of 11 children, the daughter of the late Angus and Margaret (Campbell) Morrison. Sister Florence entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha in 1939, and made her perpetual commitment in 1944. That same year she graduated with her RN from St. Martha's Hospital School of Nursing, and remained on staff there until 1953. During those years and for several years following, Sister Florence furthered her education in the health care field. She earned certification in Nursing Unit Administration, Hospital Organization and Management and Nursing Service Administration. Sister Florence was certified as a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators and of the Canadian College of Health Service. After her retirement from full time service in the health care field, Sister Florence studied Pastoral Care receiving her diploma from Carlton University, Ottawa, Ont. During her ministry in health care, Sister Florence served in Banff, Alta., and Melville, Sask., as Director of Nursing Services and as Administrator at St. Peter's Hospital, Melville, and the R.K. MacDonald Guest House. Later she volunteered as Pastoral Care worker in Banff and Calgary, Alta. and served as Health Nurse at Bethany. Because of failing health, Sister Florence returned to Bethany in 1999. She entered Bethany's Extended Care Unit in 2004. Sister Florence's life was devoted to the ministry of health care; of service in official and volunteer sectors; of moving gracefully from one form of health service to another, and of being grounded in community as she did so. Besides her parents, Sister Florence was predeceased by brothers, Douglas, Ernest, Howard Andrew, Joseph, Michael and Peter; by sisters, Jessie Corneliussen and Alice Tait. She is survived by two brothers, Francis and James. The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Sunday, Dec. 15 at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Bethany Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home of Antigonish. Marjorie Anne (MacIntyre) MacKay Born: July 5th, 1940 Passed on: October 16th, 2013 This beautifully kind, gentle and patient lady, a proud daughter of Cape Breton, slipped away peacefully at dusk with her husband and daughter by her side at St. Mary's Hospital on British Columbia's Sunshine Coast.
