Betty passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Dec. 27, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Caroline MacRae. Betty was born in Big Baddeck and was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her sons, Malcy, Calgary, Daniel (EmmyLou), Englishtown, Bruce (Sharon), Baddeck, Blair (Veronica), Calgary, Murdock (Theresa), Calgary; grandchildren, Blair (Doug), Cole, Brett, Matthew (Katelyn), Malcolm, Neila and their mother Lucy, Big Baddeck, Jannel, Brandon, MaKenna and great-grandchildren Jaxon and William. She is also survived by brothers, Raymond, Massachusetts, Charlie (Irene), Sackville and her good friend, Christine. Betty was predeceased by husband Donald, infant son Ralph and brothers, Murdock and John. The family would like to thank the staff at Miners Memorial Manor, staff at Cape Breton Regional Hospital and doctors and staff at Victoria County Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to charity of one's choice. Sister Sarah Jane (Sister St. John Bernard) Delorey Born In: Pomquet Passed in: Antigonish, Canada Passed on: December 27th, 2013 Sister Sarah Jane Delorey, 96, died peacefully on Dec. 27, 2013, at the CND Health Center in Sydney. Born in Pomquet, N.S., she was the daughter of the late John Baptist Delorey and Catherine Agnes Boudreau. Besides her parents, Sister Sarah was predeceased by her brothers, Leonard, William, Edmund, Bernard, Dominic, Francis, Clement and two sisters, Mary and Natalie. Sister Sarah entered the Congregation and made final profession Aug. 24, 1945. She spent her entire Religious Life at Mount St. Bernard, Antigonish in household services until her retirement. Her quiet dedicated services to both the sisters and resident students is remembered with gratitude by those to whom she ministered. Sister generously shared her skills and was most supportive and instructive with those who worked with her. Sister was very devoted to her family and her work. She cherished her Acadian roots and possessed a strong devotion to St. Anne and St. Marguerite Bourgeoys. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Visitation for Sister Sarah will take place Tuesday, Dec. 31, from 9-11 a.m. at Ste. Croix Church, Pomquet, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., Rev. P.J. Baccardax presiding. Charles 'Merle' Latham Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: December 28th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of my husband, our father and grandfather Charles 'Merle' Latham, 90, of Sydney. Merle passed away peacefully with his wife Vivian by his side on Dec. 28, 2013, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Ernest and Mary (Kelly) Latham. Merle worked for Sydney/Whitney Pier Bus Company and Cape Breton Transit for 38 years until his retirement. After his retirement he enjoyed travelling with his wife and spending time in Ben Eoin. Merle's carefree and fun personality made him the life of every party with his singing and joke telling. He was loved and will be missed by everyone who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Vivian (Gautier); daughter, Nancy Sharpe, Sydney; sons, Gary, Sydney, Dennis (Christine), Edmonton, Robert 'Bobby', Sydney, and Kenneth 'Ken', Sydney; grandchildren, Valerie, Gordon, Lindsay, Katelyn, Jenny Lynn, Nolan Latham and Emily Kate Sharpe; great-grandchildren, Kole and Emma. We would like to thank the staff at St. Anne's Bay, Harbourstone for the kindness and wonderful care provided to Merle over the past five years. Elizabeth 'Theresa' MacNeil Born In: Benacadie Pond Born: December 28th, 1929 Passed in: Arlington Passed on: December 26th, 2013 Theresa MacNeil, 83, of Arlington, Mass., formerly of Benacadie Pond, passed away Thursday, Dec. 26 2013. Born Dec. 28, 1929, in Benacadie Pond, she was the daughter of the late Michael S. and Margaret (Farrell) MacNeil. Theresa left home to go to work in Massachusetts in 1953. She worked at Star Market in Somerville, Mass. She lived with her two brothers and two sisters in Arlington, Mass., and took care of them until they passed. A Gaelic speaker, she loved very much fiddle music and Gaelic songs. She was a member of the Canadian American Club of Watertown. She is survived by her sister, Dolena MacKinnon of Christmas Island, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Kay (Frank Franco), Lucy, Margaret (Al Doucette), Mary Ann and by brothers, Dannie, Alex (Mary Lizzie), Michael Leo (Theresa), Hughie Dan, Angus, Jimmy (Peggy) and brother-in-law, Joe MacKinnon. Visitation will take place Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at St. Barra Church, Christmas Island. A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 2 at 11a.m. at St. Barra Church, Christmas Island, with Rev. Paul Abbass officiating. Interment will take place at the parish cemetery. Valerie Elizabeth Quinn Born In: South Bar Born: May 7th, 1945 Passed in: Bras d'Or Passed on: December 26th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts and fond memories we announce the passing of Valerie on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013. Born in South Bar on May 7, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Mary (Webber) Quinn. She was a member of St. Joseph parish, Bras d'Or. Valerie is survived by her husband, Andrew; children, Laurie (Stephen), Donald (Wendy) and Mark (Susanne). Also left to mourn are her three grandchildren, whom she adored - Grace, Russell and Marshall; her brother, Lorne (Patricia) and sisters, Brenda (Richard) and Judy (John). There will be no visitation. A celebration of Valerie's life will take place Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. Cecilia McNabb Born In: Reserve Born: January 3rd, 1923 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: December 27th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cecilia McNabb, 90, of Reserve Mines. Cecilia passed away on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Mom was born in Judique, N.S., and was the daughter of the late Daniel and Isabelle (McIntyre) MacDougall. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines. Mom had many hobbies during her lifetime including sewing, knitting, crocheting and baking. She also enjoyed bingo and watching baseball and golf. She loved flowers and plants, she had quite a green thumb. She will be sadly missed by her son, Sheldon (Jolene), Reserve Mines; daughters, Beverly (Keith), Theresa (Frank), Corinne (Randy), all of New Brunswick, Aileen (Nick), Lower Sackville, N.S.; cherished grandchildren, Shane, Kelly, Charlene, Bruce, Maureen, Andrew, Nicholas, Christopher, Michael, Matthew; great-grandchildren, Anna, Grace, Sophia, Isaac; sister, Anne, New Hampshire, USA, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her loving husband, Dan 'Dano' McNabb, sons, Sandy, Melvin, brothers, John, Joe, sisters, Marg and Flo. Visitation for Cecilia McNabb will be held Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Fr. She will be lovingly remembered by her best friend and husband of 42 years, Leo; son James (Cathy); daughter Jennifer (Randy); precious grandchildren Emily, Robert, Rachel and Sydney; sisters Teresa (Dan) and Joanne (Leopold); brother Gary; and many more family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Arthur and Anna and brother Michael. Ava was born and raised in Sydney Mines, NS. She was a graduate of the college of Cape Breton and moved to Calgary where she established a strong reliable reputation in the printing industry. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
