Burke Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: December 25th, 2013 Barry L. Burke, 56, of Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Dec. 26, 2013. He was the son of the late John and Mary Burke of Passendaele. Barry graduated from St. Michael Sr. High School and while enrolled in the Millwright Apprentice Program, was injured in an industrial accident at the Glace Bay Heavy Water Plant at the age of 19. Barry was lovingly cared for by his parents (later his sister Kathleen) and a dedicated staff of personal care workers since 1976. He had touched many people in his life and no one will ever forget having met him. Left to mourn Barry are his siblings, brothers, Fred (Barbara) Denney, Sydney, John (Marie) Burke, Chester Basin; sisters, Kathleen Burke-MacDonald (Dan), Glace Bay, Nancy (Paul) Hines, Dartmouth; as well as 12 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, sister, Heather Hodder and niece, Holly MacDonald. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. Daveen Georgina (Balsillie) Quinn Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Forks Passed on: December 25th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wife, mother, sister, grandmother and aunt, Daveen Georgina Quinn, on Dec. 25, 2013, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late George and Kathleen 'Kay' (Stevens) Balsillie. Prior to Daveen's illness, she was employed in the dietary department of the Breton Ability Centre (Braemore Home).She enjoyed playing bingo and crafting with the girls. She was the life of the party with a legendary sense of humour. For those who knew her, her zest for life was truly inspiring. She is survived by her husband Michael; sons Michael 'Fridge' (Tammy), Enfield, and Brett, Sydney; sister, Lillian (Erhart) Mosimann, Edmonton; brothers, David (Shirley) Balsillie, Woodstock, Ont., Dale (Janice) Balsillie, Cambridge, Ont., John Balsillie, Hamilton, Ont., and grandchildren, Kody and Jessica Quinn, Sydney. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Trisha Quinn-Finlayson, sister, Christina Fraser, and brother, George Balsillie Jr. She will be sadly missed by family and friends. Sylvia (White) Boutilier Passed in: Fergus Passed on: December 26th, 2013 It is with sadness we announce the passing of our sister, Sylvia (White) Boutilier on Dec. 26, 2013. Sylvia passed away peacefully at her home in Fergus, Ont. Sylvia will be sadly missed by her daughter, Carol Ann; son, Steven; sisters, Eileen, Marion, Helen, Corrine, Sandra, Brenda and brother, Cyril. She was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Mammie White, a sister, Muriel, brothers, Gerald and Elmer. A memorial service for Sylvia will be held Dec. 31 in Fergus, Ont. Charles Edward MacDonald Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: December 28th, 2013 Charles Edward McDonald, 72, of Glace Bay, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at the Cove Guest Home in Sydney. Charlie fought a courageous battle with cancer for the past five years. Born in Glace Bay, Charlie was the son of the late Hugh and Mabel (Francis) McDonald. Charlie worked for the Water Department of Glace Bay but had to retire due to ill health. He was always proud to do an honest day's work. Charlie is survived by brothers, Hughie (Lovie), Bob (Joyce), David, Winston (Arlene), Jackie (Cathy); sisters, Bessie (Ron), Marilyn (Mike), Barbara (Willie). He was predeceased by brother, Donnie. At this time Charlie's family would like to thank Dr. Pahil and the nurses and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their care and support. They also extend special thanks to the staff at the Cove Guest Home . The care and compassion provided for Charlie was much appreciated. Theresa Delores (Vardy Stevens) Pettipas Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: December 28th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts, and fond memories, we announce the passing of Theresa, on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at the Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines, after a very courageous and difficult couple years of failing health, including the loss of personal mobility. Theresa was born in Sydney, N.S., to the late Sadie Thomas and Russell Erwin Vardy. She was also a member of Holy Redeemer parish, Whitney Pier. "Constant of love ~ Generous of heart" Charles 'Merle' Latham Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: December 28th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of my husband, our father and grandfather Charles 'Merle' Latham, 90, of Sydney. Merle passed away peacefully with his wife Vivian by his side on Dec. 28, 2013, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Ernest and Mary (Kelly) Latham. Merle worked for Sydney/Whitney Pier Bus Company and Cape Breton Transit for 38 years until his retirement. After his retirement he enjoyed travelling with his wife and spending time in Ben Eoin. Merle's carefree and fun personality made him the life of every party with his singing and joke telling. He was loved and will be missed by everyone who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Vivian (Gautier); daughter, Nancy Sharpe, Sydney; sons, Gary, Sydney, Dennis (Christine), Edmonton, Robert 'Bobby', Sydney, and Kenneth 'Ken', Sydney; grandchildren, Valerie, Gordon, Lindsay, Katelyn, Jenny Lynn, Nolan Latham and Emily Kate Sharpe; great-grandchildren, Kole and Emma.
