Mary was born and raised in Nova Scotia. She graduated from Nursing School at Sydney City Hospital in 1956 and later married Charlie in Sydney on Jan. 19, 1957. They raised their family in Sydney, residing there until 1980 when the family moved to Alberta where they established roots. Mary will be remembered for her overwhelmingly positive, cheerful attitude, love of family and her easy laugh. She will be greatly missed. Mary is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law and two daughters and sons-in-law, Smith and Alysoun Wells, Richard and Sharon Wells, Kim and Dave Fell, Karen and Mike Cunningham, seven grandchildren Erin, Shauna, Haden, Mandy, Lindsay, Jonathan and Ryan. She was predeceased by her husband Charlie on Jan. 4, 1997, a brother John MacIver and a sister Florence Ann MacNevin. Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway's Crowfoot Chapel, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W. Violet Jean Carter Born In: Harbour Grace, Canada Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: December 24th, 2013 It is with sadden hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Jean Carter, 92, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister and aunt on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at the Northside Community Guest Home. Born in Harbour Grace, N.L., Jean was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Mercer) Edwards. She was a faithful member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, where she taught Sunday school and confirmation classes, a member of the Altar and Knitting Guild and married couples. She was also a member of the Munroe Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Chesley; her children, James (Paula) Carter, Wolfville, Lillian Holland, North Sydney, Rosalind (Roland) Guy, North Sydney, and Chesley Jr. (Dale) Carter, Dartmouth; her 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Isabel Devin, N.L., and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Albert, sisters Lillian and Barbara, son-in-law Barry Holland and great-granddaughter Kimber. Visitation for Jean will be held today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Debbie Strickland officiating. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. John Joseph MacKinnon Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: December 23rd, 2013 It is with sadness we announce the passing of John Joseph MacKinnon, 66, of New Waterford on Dec. 23, 2013, at home. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Donald and Margaret 'Peggy' (Campbell) MacKinnon. John was a member of the former Mount Carmel Church, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard, New Waterford. He was a 29 year veteran of the RCMP and was stationed in Newfoundland for most of his career. One of John's highlights was serving as a UN peacekeeper in Bosnia in 1994. He enjoyed music, namely the Rolling Stones, model cars and gardening. Surviving are his wife, Dale (Beaufield) MacKinnon; son, Don MacKinnon, Halifax; brothers, Peter (Carol), Paul (Debbie), both of New Waterford, Greg (Denise), St. John's, N.L.; sister, Del MacKinnon, Halifax; granddaughter, Megan; many nieces, nephews, and his Glencoe and Newfoundland families. John was predeceased by parents, Donald and Margaret (Campbell) MacKinnon. There will be a private family visitation and funeral service in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Cremation will follow. Joanne Nichol Born In: Sydney Mines Passed in: Florence Passed on: December 24th, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing, after a brief illness, of our loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Joanne M. Nichol, 65, of Florence, on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her family. Born in Sydney Mines, Joanne was the daughter of the late Hugh Garnet and Ann Frances (Waye) MacLean. Joanne enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, her family was the most important aspect of her life. She spent many hours with her late husband Dennis, enjoying fishing, ice fishing and camping and is now reunited with him. Joanne is survived by her children Dennis (Cindy) Nichol, Florence, Tammy Nichol (Robbie), Boularderie, Sherry Nichol (Gerald), Florence, Jamie (Sarah) Nichol, Sydney Mines; her grandchildren, Jordan, Tasha, Courtney, Jessica, Jenna, Tayler, Emily, Logan, Madison and Cody; one great-grandchild, Brody; her brothers, Vince (Rose) MacLean, Bras d'Or, David (Debbie) MacLean, Ontario, and John James (Val) MacLean, Calgary, and many nieces and nephews. Born in Louisbourg, she was the daughter of the late George and Selena (McGillivray) Willett. Jane worked in the housecleaning department at Bethany Retreat Centre, Antigonish, for over 25 years. She loved doing crossword puzzles. Jane was a devout Catholic and loved her church dearly. She was a very compassionate and gentle lady. At the time of her death, Jane was surrounded by the caring and compassionate staff at Seaview Manor. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Jane was predeceased by three sisters, Ada, Elizabeth, Grace and five brothers, Lawrence, Bob, Bill, George and Fred. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held at a later date in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Fr. Leo Boone will officiate. MacIsaac Born In: East Bay Passed in: Sydney Passed on: December 25th, 2013 It is with broken hearts that we the family announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and brother, Alex MacIsaac on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at the Celtic Court, Piper Lane. Born in East Bay, he was the son of the late Peter and Mary (MacDonald) MacIsaac. He was an electrician by trade and work at the Sydney Steel for 38 years before retiring. Alex enjoyed gardening, swimming and taking the kids camping in his younger years. He will be missed. Alex is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sheila (Smith); his children, Donna (Max) Brocklehurst, Edmonton, Allan (Maddy), Toronto, Robert (Jill), Florida, Sheila (John) Hall, Sydney; nine wonderful grandchildren and 12 precious great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his two sisters, Theresa (Don) MacPherson, Bedford, and Helen (Lloyd) Reid, Sarnia, Ont., as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Marlene (2007), sisters, Mary and Margaret, brothers, Joseph and Daniel. Cremation has taken place. Earl Leslie Dillon Passed in: Mira Passed on: December 25th, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Earl Leslie Dillon on Dec. 25, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Born in Sydney, he was the son of Louis Edward Dillon and Jean (MacDonald) Kerr. In earlier years, Earl was employed by Chappell's Limited and Shipyard Shell. In 1965, he joined the staff of J.R. MacDonald Ltd, Christies Biscuits, Nabisco and Kraft. Earl was fondly known and remembered by young and old alike as, "Mr. Christie". Earl's passion was time spent aboard "Me and the Buoys" with family and friends on the Mira. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lynette (Larsen); sons, Brad (Nadine), Halifax, and Curt (Kim), Mira; grandchildren, Jacob, Maggie and Ryan; brothers, Ralph, John and Peter; sisters, Linda (David) MacIver and Marjorie (Wes) MacQueen; stepfather, Archie (Anne Lee) Kerr, all of Sydney. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an infant son, Craig Melvin. Visitation will be held to celebrate his life at the Mira Boat Club, Hillside Road, Mira on Saturday, Dec. 28, from 2-4 p.m. Interment at Oakfield Cemetery at a later date. Petrie Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: December 24th, 2013 It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of Walter Petrie on Dec. 24, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his wife, close family and friends by his side. Born in New Waterford, N.S., he was the son of the late Walter and Christina (MacDonald) Petrie Sr. Walter was a member of the Parish of St Leonard, he was formally of St. Agnes and had a strong faith. Walter worked in many fields and was proficient in all, but his first passion was a third generation coal miner. He would help any and every one that needed a hand; this led him to be a recipient of the Lieutenant Governors Medal of N.S in 1974 for volunteer service. Walter was unique in the fact he could turn his hand to anything and his next passion was carpentry, he worked in various parts of this country applying his trade. The Lord must have had a problem on the 24 of December and called on Walter for a hand. He is survived by his loving wife Donna (Ropek), brother in-law Teddy, brother Gerald (Darlene), sisters, Patricia and Janet (Vernon) Lord. He is also survived by very special nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts and many adopted nieces and nephews that Walter thought highly of, many good friends that he laughed and joked with over his short time here and finally he leaves behind four very close friends, Brian and Rose McPherson and his good buddy Danny and Marilyn Kalbhenn. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother Doug Petrie. Cremation has taken place. There will be a private chapel service today (Friday, Dec. 27) at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Deacon Leo Penny officiating.
