Doug was a devoted family man, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to all. His legacy lives on with his loving wife of 64 years, Connie, and their children, Ian, Stuart (Linda), Bill (Alice), Corrine (Wayne) and Sandra; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, Keith (Pat); sister-in-law, Jeannie and brother-in-law, Claude 'Todd' Hickey along with many nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his parents, William James and Eva MacDonald; brothers, Horace (Christine), Edgar; sister, Shirley Hickey and daughter-in-law, Diane. For Doug, his greatest legacy was his family. He was never so happy as when he was surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They all meant the world to him. He would gaze over the crowd and be thankful for the wonderful family he had. He said that they were his utmost accomplishment. Doug spent his adult life working as a locomotive engineer with the coal company and loved driving through Sydney Mines. Connie waved to Doug as he drove by while she was skating nearby. Doug realized he wanted more and went back and graduated from St. F.X. with his teaching degree. Doug soon went to the former Adult Vocational Training Centre as an Instructor. He enjoyed spending time with faculty and students and making an impact wherever he could. Doug spoke so fondly of his memories and service with the 2nd Battalion of the Nova Scotia Highlanders, where he retired with the rank of Major, Commanding officer of A Company, North Sydney. Doug was a dedicated and founding member of the Northside Golden K Club. Doug believed in supporting others in every way possible and that was evident throughout his involvement with the United Church of Canada (Carman, Sydney Mines, and St. John’s, Big Bras d’Or). Doug supported his church family through fellowship and prayer. We, his family, will miss Doug's sense of humour and fun-loving ways, but we are thankful for his 89 years of life. In Doug’s words, “Don’t be backwards about coming forward”. We would like to extend our thanks to all of the care and support that Doug received from his doctor and nephew, Dr. Paul Hickey, the staff of Northside General Hospital, and the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home. Thank you all for the comfort and support that you provided to Dad. You made his final days as peaceful as possible and for that – we, the family, are grateful. A memorial service celebrating Doug’s life will take place on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at 2 p.m. in St. John’s United Church, Big Bras d’Or, with Diane Kempt DLM officiating. Special thanks to St. John’s United Church, their Ladies Auxiliary, and to the Northside Golden K Club for serving as Honourary Pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s United Church, Building Fund. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
