Cary Garfield Grant Age 74 Born the only child on March 7, 1939, of Edward (Eben) and Hazel Grant, formerly Wilson, in Sydney, N.S., passed away at home after lengthy illness on Dec. 20, 2013, in Vancouver, B.C. Predeceased by both parents, he is survived by his longtime partner and eventual spouse of 32 years Jerry Hatchard and will truly be missed by all who knew and loved this rare individual. Stephen 'Beef' Anthony AuCoin 89, Glace Bay Stephen 'Beef ' AuCoin, a resident of Steeles Hill, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Taigh Na Mara. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Jack and Catherine (MacIntosh) AuCoin. He was selfemployed and a veteran. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma (Hodder); children, Donna (David), Fox Creek, Alta.; sons, Stephen ( Joanne), Fort McMurray, David (Connie), Englishtown, Gina (David), Dundas, Ont., Allan (Anne), Glace Bay, Michael (Tammy), Donkin; sister, Sharon (Bill) Clarke; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Helen Marie Gregor With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mother, Helen on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, N.S. Born in Reserve Mines, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Stella McNeil. From the age of 10, she was raised by Syl and Marion Phalen in Glace Bay, N.S. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. For many years of her adult life Helen worked at Phalen's Bakery in Glace Bay. Prior to moving to Milford Station, she lived in Hadleyville, N.S. She is survived by daughters, Sylvia MacKinnon, Lower Sackville, and Marion ( Dan) O'Neill, Milford Station, N.S., with whom she resided, and daughter-in-law, Lorraine Gregor, Sydney Mines, N.S. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband, Richie and son, Richard (Bumper). Walter Oake 83, Amherst Walter Oake, 83 years of age, of Amherst, passed away on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Eileen Jesty (nee Hopkins) 93, Sydney Mildred Eileen Jesty, 93, passed away suddenly at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Monday, Dec. 30, 2013. Eileen was born in North Sydney to the late Norman and Mary (Caswell) Hopkins. She was predeceased by her first husband, William John Warren, second husband, Edgar Frank Jesty, brother, Fred Hopkins, stepson, Cam Jesty, stepdaughter, Lois Jesty. He worked in Lingan mine and was a member of the UMWA for several years. Gordie was actively involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. He served on various boards and committees throughout the years including the Community Health Board, Alternative Justice, and New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic to name a few. He thoroughly enjoyed vacationing in Florida during the winter months and spending time with his family and friends. Gordie was an outgoing and well known man who will be missed by all. Mildred Reid Grant Gray 93, Gabarus It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mildred Reid Grant Gray, 93, of Gabarus, Cape Breton, on Jan. 3, 2014, at home with her family. She was the daughter of Wiley and Elsie (Reid) Grant. Mildred was a lifelong resident of Gabarus, member of Zion Wesley United Church and was dearly loved by family and friends all over the world. She welcomed opportunities to assist those with less and was generous to many groups and individuals. One of her many great accomplishments was her book that was just published last month, a legacy to her family and friends. Mildred is survived by her daughters, Karen (Tom) Ferguson, Three Hills, Alta., Nancy (Wayne) Dickie, Gabarus and son, Albert (Marilyn), Kingston, N.S.
