She passed away peacefully at Victoria County Memorial Hospital with her family by her side. Born on Nov.18, 1939, at North River Bridge to parents Molcolm Jim MacAskill and Dolena (MacLeod) MacAskill. Chris is survived by two brothers, Lloyd (Delores) and Mel, both at North River also two sisters, Edna (Leonard) Smith and Stella Horton, both living in Baddeck. She is also survived by nieces and nephews and her best friend, Linda MacLean. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Molly MacSween, Sydney, Rosie Burbine and Sadie MacAskill, North River Bridge; also brothers-in-law, Clarence MacSween and Ralph Burbine. Chris requested no visitation or funeral. A graveside service will be held at a later date.Arrangements under the direction of Sunset Funeral Co-operative, Margaree Valley “Safe in the Arms of Jesus' Martha Mullins Born In: Bonavista, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada Born: August 11th, 1922 Passed in: Sydney, Canada Passed on: December 29th, 2013 Martha Mullins passed away peacefully at The Cove Guest Home, on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at the age of 91 years. Born in Bonavista, N.L., she was the daughter of the late George and Irene Dunn. She came to Sydney at a young age. Martha was an avid bowler and thoroughly enjoyed a good game of cards and bingo. Although unassuming in nature, there was always a mischievousness in the twinkle of her eyes. A good and fun lady, who will be sorely missed, but recalled with a host of happy memories. She will be lovingly missed by her son, Bill; grandsons, Jamie (Leslie) and Sandy (Kayla); great-grandchildren, Brodie, Cameron, Ciara and Morgan; sister Anne, sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Cyril) MacDonald, Florence (Dave) Sturgess, Sheila (Cecil) MacArthur, Anne, Marion and Anna; brothers-in-law, Ivan (Donna), Carmen (Wanda), Kenny (Wendy) and special niece-in-law, Annie Murphy. Mary 'Frances' Sheffield Born In: Sydney Mines Born: July 29th, 1937 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: December 31st, 2013 It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and sister, Mary 'Frances' Sheffield, on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at the Northside General Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Frances was born in North Sydney, July 29, 1937, and was the daughter of the late William and Catherine (Osbourne) Dolomont. Frances was a devoted member of St. Joseph parish in North Sydney. In her younger years, she was a Sunday school teacher which she was proud to do, and enjoyed it. She was also a former member of the CWL. She was past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Northside General Hospital and was presented with the Queens Jubilee Medal for her work as a volunteer. Mom is survived by her daughters, Cathy (Frank) Gale, Nancy (Kevin) Cleary, Margaret (Albert) Theriault, with whom she lived with for the last 15 years; her sons, Robert (Joanne) Sheffield, Paul (Colleen) Sheffield; her grandchildren, Danny, Stephen (Shannon), Candace, Kathy Lynn, Robin, Ryan, Cheryl, Christopher, Jordan, Amanda, Taylor and Ashley. Mary Emmeline MacNeil Born In: Dominion Passed in: Dominion Passed on: December 30th, 2013 With heavy hearts, we announce the death of our Mother, Mummy, Mom, Grammy, Gram and GiGi, Mary Emmeline MacNeil on Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at New Waterford Heights care facility, New Waterford. Born in Dominion, Emmeline was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary ('Mayme' McLean) Graham. Some of her longest lasting memories were from her early childhood, tending the fan in her Father's (Papa) forge. "They love to see the flaming forge And watch the burning sparks that fly Like chaff from a threshing-floor The village blacksmith, under a spreading chestnut tree — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Many of her other memories came from her 36 years of service at CFS Sydney. Whenever she told a story from her beloved 'radar base' she swelled with joy and beamed a wonderful smile. She worked in the kitchen there from its very early inception as an Royal Canadian Air Force Base and component of the DEW line to its final days and closure, as Canadian Forces Base Sydney. She had met, cooked, served and baked for innumerable people from all across our country, a fact which gave her great pride, and stayed with her to the end. Another source of pride for Emmeline were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was proud to have been a working mother, prouder still to be Gram and being GiGi completed and filled her heart beyond imagination. She was dearly loved and will be dearly missed. Emmeline is survived by her husband of 55 years, Greg MacNeil, formerly from Low Point; her children, Neil Kennedy, Dominion, Barbara Hall (Edward), New Brunswick, Maurice Kennedy (Karen), Dominion, Monica McNeil (Michael), Dominion, Michael Kennedy (Loraine), Dominion, Debbie Parlee, Ontario, and Allan MacNeil, Dominion. Samuel Daniel 'Timmie' Pearo Born In: Kewstoke Born: June 5th, 1958 Passed in: Whycocomagh Passed on: December 31st, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Samuel 'Timmie' Pearo of Whycocomagh. Samuel passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, in the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born at home in Kewstoke, June 5, 1958, he was the son of the late Samuel and Margaret (Nock) Pearo. He was a member of Stewart United Church and Stewartdale Cemetery Committee, Whycocomagh. Samuel was a dedicated carpenter who, along with his brother John Robert, owned Pearo Brothers Woodworking Ltd. He was known for his sense of humour and his love of dancing. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. Samuel is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 34 years, Linda (MacLeod); his beloved children, Daniel (Donna), Fort McMurray, Alta., and Tricia (Paul), Williamswood, N.S. He is also survived by sisters, Shirley (Frankie) Chandler, Patsy (Donald) Mac Donald, Diane Rouse, Wilma (Ross) Matheson, Margie Ellis, Melody (Kenny) Ferguson; brothers, John Robert (Krista) and Sheldon (Lisa). Stewart, F.R.C.S.(C) Marsh Born In: Reserve Mines Born: April 20th, 1925 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: December 30th, 2013 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Stewart, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born in Reserve Mines to Henry and Mary Jane (Kanary) Marsh, Stewart graduated from St. FX in 1949, and then pursued his medical degree from the University of Ottawa graduating in 1959. He then furthered his studies in ENT in Detroit, Mich., and returned to Sydney to open up his practice in 1965. After his retirement in 1996, he began working with the Cape Breton Hearing Clinic. Stewart is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Florence (MacKinnon) Marsh; sons, Stewart Jr., Sydney, Todd (Gayle), Glace Bay; and daughter, Donna Marsh, Sydney; two grandchildren, Zackery and Alannah Pezzareallo (Shane) and great-grandaughter, Jayden. Also surviving are his sisters, Zita Armishaw, Dophie Marsh, Maurina Marsh, Marie Marsh and brothers, Gannon (Brother Ninian) Marsh, Fr. Anthony Marsh, Joseph Marsh and many nieces and nephews. Stewart is also survived by his sister-in-law, Theresa and husband Ted Slaney. Stewart was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph, James, Alphonse, Dennis, Sylvester, Henry and Coady and sisters, Mary Ann, Dolores and Gilbert. Mary (MacIver) Wells Born In: Sydney Born: May 10th, 1935 Passed in: Calgary, Alberta, Canada Passed on: December 22nd, 2013 Mary Wells of Calgary, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013 at the age of 78 years. Mary was born and raised in Nova Scotia. She graduated from nursing school at Sydney City Hospital in 1956 and later married Charlie in Sydney on Jan. 19, 1957. They raised their family in Sydney, residing there until 1980 when the family moved to Alberta where they established roots. Mary will be remembered for her overwhelmingly positive, cheerful attitude, love of family and her easy laugh. She will be greatly missed. Mary is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law and two daughters and sons-in-law, Smith and Alysoun Wells, Richard and Sharon Wells, Kim and Dave Fell, Karen and Mike Cunningham, seven grandchildren Erin, Shauna, Haden, Mandy, Lindsay, Jonathan and Ryan. She was predeceased by her husband Charlie on January 4, 1997, a brother John MacIver and a sister Florence Ann MacNevin. Born in Little Pond on April 2, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Genevieve (Reashore) Dawe. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines. Theresa worked for many years at the family restaurant in Sydney Mines, until illness forced her to retire. She is survived by her son Howie (Edwina) Gardiner, and her daughter Wendy (Derrick) Burton. Also left to mourn are her grandchildren Shawn, Alicia, and Brittany Burton, Josh Osmond, sisters Louise King (Kimmy), Patricia Jessome (Terry), and Ann Moore (John), and her son-in-law Freddie Osmond. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter Debbie Osmond, grandson Trevor Burton, granddaughter Vanessa Burton, and a sister Delores Dawe. Syvlia (Roberts) Carrigan Born In: Lingan Passed in: Brampton, Ontario, Canada Passed on: December 18th, 2013 We regret to announce the passing of Sylvia (Roberts) Carrigan in Brampton, Ont. on Dec. 18, 2013, surrounded by her dear family, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Born in Lingan to parents, Lionel and Hazen (Young) Roberts. Survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Danny; children, Maureen (Hugh), Ottawa, Trish (Ian), Brampton; adored and best Nana to grandchildren, Katie, Jessica, Sarah and Franco. Also survived by brother, Mike (Judy); niece, Kathleen and nephew, Lionel. Dear friend to Peggy Whyte. After the early death of her father, she was reared by her mother and aunt, Mary 'Mamie' R. Roberts. Sylvia graduated from Mt. Carmel and Central high schools and N.S. Normal College. She began her teaching career at Mt. Carmel School until her marriage brought her to Ontario where she continued to teach until her retirement with the Catholic School Board in 1996. Sylvia was a passionate and dedicated teacher. She was respected and admired by all who crossed her path. Ever true to her Catholic faith, many families expressed their appreciation for her dedication in preparing their children for the sacraments. The funeral mass was held on Dec. 21, 2013, at St. Mary's R.C. Church in Brampton, Ont.
