Born in Mill Creek, Sheila was a daughter of the late Garfield and Mary (Pendergast) Leblanc. Sheila was a graduate of the Empire Business School. She was a Nova Scotia representative on the Status of Women Council in 1948. Sheila worked as the manager of the Blarney Stone Tavern in Sydney Mines, later the manager of the restaurant at the Tartan Downs Raceway, Sydney and as a secretary for the Unemployment Insurance office in Sydney Mines. She was an accomplished Master Bridge Player. Sheila was a faithful member of St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines; she was a member of the CWL and was an associate member of the Congregation of Notre Dame. Sheila is survived by her son, John (Mary Theresa) Reilly, Sydney Mines; brothers, Alex (Bev) LeBlanc, Bras d'Or , John LeBlanc, Sydney; her sisters, Ann (Skip) Meehan, Cleveland, Ohio, Selica (Gregor) MacPherson, Lingan, Joan (Ian) MacDonald, Bedford; her best friend and sister-in-law, Joan Fiander; her five grandchildren, Katherine (Jason) Campbell, Colleen, Laura, Mairibeth and Michael; her niece, Michelle Keeling with whom she shared a special bond. Also surviving are her stepchildren, Tommy (Anna) Day, Lawrence (Brenda) Day, Irene (Robert) Messenger, Alfred (Theresa) Day, Leslie (Brenda) Day, Ida (Dave) Matheson, Juanita (William) Parks, Jenny Day, Cathy Day, Denise (George) Maxner, her step daughter-in-law, Heather Pyke, numerous step grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Sheila was predeceased by her first husband Wilfred Reilly, her second husband Lawrence Day, her brother Barry LeBlanc and a stepson Pius Day. Visitation for Sheila will be held 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Patrick O'Neill officiating. Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines at a later date. Lillian Marie (Stubbard) Paulin Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Reserve Mines Passed on: January 5th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lillian Marie Paulin, 63, of Reserve Mines. Lillian passed away on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, Lillian 'Nana' was the daughter of the late Roddie and Isa (McWhirter) Stubbard. Lillian lived in Glace Bay, cherished her family and loved her grandchildren more than anything else in this world. She loved to shop and have, 'nail night' with her granddaughter, Shaylene. Lillian was known to be the person others could count on and would help anyone in need. A passionate, loyal and true friend, Lillian will be sadly missed. Lillian was one of three golden girls, her two sisters, Carol and Velma were her confidants, besties and partners in crime. She treasured their talks and times spent together. Left to mourn this great loss are daughters, Lorraine Paulin (Corrie Ann Vallis), Josie Paulin; grandchildren, Shaylene Moore, Robert Moore and Samantha Paulin. Also surviving are siblings, Velma McNeil (Al Burke), Carol (James) Williams, George Stubbard, Josie (Sonny) Timmons, Maurina (Fred) Lynk, Erville (Billy) Stubbard, Isabelle and Andrew Donovan; sister-in-law, Judy Stubbard; brothers-in-law, Stan Saccary, Ernel Turnbull, many nieces, nephews and her godson, 'Little' Stan Saccary. Lillian was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Joseph Paulin, nephew, Sgt. Jimmy MacNeil, niece, Wanda McNeil, two sisters, Marion Saccary, Gerry Turnbull and a brother, Shelly Stubbard. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. William 'Gareth' Drinnan Born In: Wales Born: August 4th, 1951 Passed in: Big Baddeck Passed on: December 29th, 2013 (William) Gareth Drinnan, 62, passed away Dec. 29, 2013. Gareth was born in Conwy, Wales, Aug. 4, 1951. Gareth worked at the Department of Transportation for 33 years. He was president of The Nova Scotia Highway workers union CUPE Local 1867 for 18 years. During his tenure as president Gareth represented his union on numerous boards and committees; including the Nova Scotia public service long term disability plan trust, the government master committee on health and safety and the government diversity round table committee. Gareth's greatest joy in life was helping others. He will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his best friend, Cynthia and daughter, Thia; brothers, Phillip (Jackie), Malcolm (Evie), Roy; sister, Faith (Donald); and many nieces and nephews who he loved very much. Predeceased by daughter Tracy Anne, mother Marjorie, and father Roy. In keeping with Gareth's wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of MacAskill Funeral Home Baddeck. Raymond Francis Hennessey Back to Cape Breton Post Born In: Reserve Mines Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: January 4th, 2014 Mr. Raymond Francis Hennessey, 88, of Glace Bay passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Reserve Mines, Raymond was the son of the late Mark and Maude (Gardiner) Hennessey. He was the last surviving member of the Hennessey family in Reserve Mines. Ray worked as a coal miner for more than 50 years, working with Dominion Coal Company, Broughton and Gardiner Mines and ending his career with the Cape Breton Development Corp. at # 26 Colliery, Glace Bay. He was a life member of the Glace Bay Senior Citizen's and Pensioners Club, Glace Bay. Ray is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Shirley (nee Smith); daughter, Elaine (Harold) Brufatto, Glace Bay; sons, R.W 'Wally' Hennessey (Anne Fowler), Cameron Lake, N.S., K.W. 'Keith' Hennessey (Lena Landry), Ardoise, N.S. and special nephew, Kevin Hennessey as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. Ray was also proud grandfather to, Lori, Christine, Raymond, Lisa, Matthew, James. Also surviving are 16 great-grandchildren. Anthony Niedzielski Born: October 13th, 1932 Passed in: Sydney Forks Passed on: January 3rd, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Anthony Niedzielski, 81, of Meadows Road, Sydney Forks. Anthony passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on Jan. 3, 2014. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Anthony and Mary (Michalik) Niedzielski. Prior to his residence on Meadows Road, the family operated a farm and sawmill on river Deny's Mountain. Anthony had a great passion for hockey, life-time fan and supporter of hjis beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. Also he was one of the founding members of the former Sydney Forks Minor Hockey Association. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he was employed with Municipal Ready Mix for 39 years. Anthony took great pride and pleasure in his job and was a very dedicated and loyal employee. Anthony is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 54 years, Pauline (Reid) Niedzielski; sons, Edward (Donna), Gordie (Cleo), Teddy (Seana) and his daughter, Jane. Anthony is also survived by his 13 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Maria, Anthony, Johnny, Keegan, Geoffrey, Hannah, Melissa, Jane, Joey, Colby, Dylan, Ptra and Julia; sister, Wanda Yurchesyn. Claude Joseph Ladouceur Shirley MacNeil Back to Cape Breton Post Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 4th, 2014 It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our Mother, Shirley MacNeil, wife of the late Ian MacNeil on Jan. 4, 2014, in the Northside General Hospital. Shirley was born in Glace Bay and grew up in Sydney, the daughter of the late Murdock and Annie (Morrison) Kerr. Shirley enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge club members, baking for her family, reading, and singing in the Rotary show chorus in Showboat, Desert Song and Student Prince. As a young adult, she volunteered as a Brown Owl. She was a lifelong member of St. Andrew's United Church and Bethel Presbyterian Church. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Ainslie MacNeil-Campbell (Bill) of Halifax; sons, John MacNeil and Alan MacNeil (Norma), both of Sydney; grandsons, Nicholas Campbell of Calgary, and Tim Campbell of Halifax; granddaughter, Alexis of Sydney. She is also survived by her sister, Heather Inkpen (Ross) of Toronto; brother, Bruce Kerr of Sydney; brother-in-law, Bob Prier of Dartmouth and sister-in-law, Marg Kerr of Sydney River. Also, her dear friend and cousin by marriage, Thelma McCurdy. Shirley was predeceased by sister, Elaine Prier, brothers, Ken Kerr (Rita) and Donnie Kerr. A funeral service to celebrate Shirley's life will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 7 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Rev. Thomas Whent will officiate, reception following the service. Born In: Hurst Born: October 22nd, 1947 Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: December 21st, 2013 We regret to announce the sudden passing of Claude Ladouceur, 66, of Sydney Mines, on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at home. Born in Hurst, Ont., on Oct. 22, 1947, he was the son of the late Roger and Rita (Brulé) Ladouceur. He was a member of Holy Family parish, Sydney Mines. Claude worked for many years for Blinkhorn Paving. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #008, Sydney Mines. He is survived by brothers, Maurice and Gerry Ladouceur; and sisters, Henrietta Gibson and Denise Roy. Also left to mourn are his many nieces, nephews and cousins and good friends Michael Holic and family and Danny March and family. Besides his parents, Claude was predeceased by a brother Rhéal and a sister Diana. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J.M. Words of comfort may be sent to [email protected] Stephen Alexander 'Sandy' Burns Born In: New Waterford Born: September 10th, 1954 Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: January 3rd, 2014 "When his breath began to fade, the angels hovered above him, gently lifting his spirit into the heavenly hands of God." With broken hearts we announce that Sandy entered into eternal peace at his home in River Ryan on Jan. 3, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in New Waterford on Sept. 10, 1954, he was the second son of the late Sandy and Theresa (Donovan) Burns. With a zest for life and a witty sense of humour, Sandy enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his beloved family and treasured friends so it would be only fitting that he was surrounded by their presence to the end. His spirit and loving memories will be forever cherished by his wife Cathy (Grechuk); son, Jeff, Donkin; daughter, Natalie (Ryan Marman), Glace Bay; stepdaughter, Katelyn; as well as his brother Bill Burns (Margaret Anne), Sydney River; sisters, Brenda (Timmy Chiasson) and Melanie (Lloyd MacLeod) both of New Waterford. Sandy was also the proud Grandpa to his two beautiful grandsons, Jacob MacLellan and Blake Marman and the much-loved uncle to his nieces and nephews. He will forever hold a special bond and will be deeply missed by his extended Grechuk family. An avid athlete, Sandy excelled in all sports with one of his most memorable feats being a member of the Nova Scotia provincial soccer team that competed in the Canada Games in 1973. As a result of his athletic achievements, he was recently inducted into the New Waterford Sports Hall of Fame with the 1973 Challenge Cup winners and will be honoured as Division Chairperson during Coal Bowl 2014. While employed with Devco and prior to its closure, Sandy successfully completed his Masters in mental health. He was a member of the Canadian Counseling Association and the Nova Scotia Social Workers Association, enabling him to become sole proprietor of S.A. Burns Counseling where his compassion for others extended well beyond the office walls. He later commenced employment with the Department of Justice in 2012. Sandy had a profound respect for and was a true advocate of the Mi'kmaw communities of Cape Breton and beyond, participating in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Hearings in 2011. Besides his parents, Sandy was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Anne Grechuk. Visitation for Sandy will be held today (Monday, Jan. 6) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A celebration of his life will take will take place Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, 3180 Mount Carmel Ave., New Waterford with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, River Ryan, at a later date. All are invited to join the family for a reception in St. Leonard's Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford. Predeceased by both parents, he is survived by his longtime partner and eventual spouse of 32 years Jerry Hatchard and will truly be missed by all who knew and loved this rare individual.
