Amy passed away at her residence on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014. Born in Wadden’s Cove, Amy was the daughter of the late Charlie and Mary (Tutty) Boutilier. She loved to play cards and was a member of card club for many years playing canasta, queens and rummoli. Amy and her husband, Edward loved to play the guitar and sing. Amy was a former employee of Hopkins and Morien Fish Plants and General Instruments. She also was a member of Branch 55 Morien Legion. Amy will be sadly missed by her sons, Kevin (Donna), Wadden’s Cove, Donald (Heather), Glace Bay, Melvin (Maxine Yates), Tower Road; sisters, Lilly (Doug) Keats, South Head, Glenda (John) Dillon, Birch Grove; six cherished grandchildren, Natasha, Amy, Virginia, Charles, Amanda, Melvie; three great-grandchildren, Emily, Jacob, Isaac. Besides her parents, Amy was predeceased by her husband, Edward, brother, Melvin, sister, Harriet and daughter-in-law, Diane Wadden. In keeping with Amy’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation will take place. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Rev. Vernon Reid will be officiating. Margaret MacDonald Born In: Donkin Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: January 19th, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret MacDonald, 88, at the Glace Bay General Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014. Margie was the daughter of the late Dan Alex and Carrie (Wadden) MacMullen, and was a member of St. Luke’s United Church, Donkin. Margie was a member of the Queen Victoria Rebekah Lodge #63. She was known for having the teapot on for anyone who visited and she was happiest when her house was full. Margie devoted her life to her family and was a caregiver to many throughout the years. Margie is survived by her two daughters, Catherine (Paul) Blades, Donkin, and Morah MacDonald, Ottawa. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Joanne (Floyd), Paula and Jennifer as well as her cherished great grandchildren, Nicholas, Lauren, Liam and Lindsay. Also surviving is her sister, Catherine Ryan; her brothers, Alfred (Eileen), Donnie and a sister-in-law, Bernadette. Margie is also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends. Margie was predeceased by her first husband, Orville McGillivray and her second husband, Phillip MacDonald. She was also predeceased by brothers, Hartland (in infancy), Thomas (Minnie), Jimmy (Martha) and Gordie, as well as sister-in-law, Effie, brother-in-law, Gerald, niece Jackie and special grandson-in-law, Bernie. Visitation will be held today (Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Robert Biggar is Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in St. Luke’s United Church, Donkin. Interment will follow in St. Luke’s United Church Cemetery. Alexander Webber Passed in: Little Lorraine Passed on: January 17th, 2014 It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Alexander L. Webber at the age of 76, on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at home, peacefully with his family. Born on Spotted Island Labrador, he was the son of the late Barton Webber and Rhoda (Turnbull) Webber Kennedy Boutilier. Alex worked at National Sea Products for 45 years. He joined the work force at the age of 14 and was employed there until the plant closed. He was also a member of the “Special Constable Service” for the town of Louisbourg. He was an active lobster fisherman and he belonged to the Bateston Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 55 years, Margaret (MacMillan); daughters, Bev (Lloyd) Snow, Pictou, Cecilia, Ontario and son-in-law, Lester Ward, Maureen (Daniel), Mira, Jeanette (Jerry) Dykstra, Marathon, Ontario; sons, Darrell (Chickie) and Robie (Raylene). He is also survived by his sisters, Laura Kennedy, Little Lorraine, Rosalie Little, Hopewell, Lillian Keats, Happy Valley, Goosebay; brother, Jim Webber, Ontario and brother-in-law, Donald MacMillan, Louisbourg. He was the proud grandfather of Tanya, Brandon, Ryan, Justine, Cody, Danielle, Kyle, Jeremy, Randy, Jovin, Monica and great-grandfather to Aiden and Maddox. He is loved by many nieces and nephews as well as many more who considered him a second Dad. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by, brothers Ken, Johnny, Herbert, Wilfred, and Abe, all of Happy Valley Goose Bay, and Robert Kennedy, Little Lorraine. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of … Robert 'Bobby' Laffin Born In: Bras d'Or Born: September 26th, 1926 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: January 19th, 2014 With deep sadness we announce the passing of our dad on Jan. 19, 2014, at the Northside Community Guest Home. He was born in Bras d’or on Sept. 26, 1926, to Daniel and Ella (Tobin) Laffin. Bobby was a pretty easygoing guy who loved to have a drink and a dance whenever he could. He was always there to help anyone who needed it and could put his hand to most anything. He loved to ice fish in the winter and was an avid gardener with quite a green thumb. The residents at the guest home got to enjoy the beautiful strawberries and vegetables he grew in his garden the last two summers he was a resident there. Most of his working days were in the coal mines starting with the old pits in Bras d’Or. He was also a lobster fisherman and along with his wife June they ran Bob’s Canteen in Florence for many years. A very special time in Dad’s life was when he was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in Oromocto, New Brunswick along with his brothers Nick and William. He fought the best opposition promoters offered him regardless of weight or reputation. He was fearless in the ring. He defeated some of the best amateur and pros active in the Maritimes in the 1940s and 1950s. Bobby was very proud to have been both a Cape Breton and Maritime Golden Gloves Champion. He is survived by his sons, Art (Marla), Howie (Nancy), and his daughters, Carolyn (Lennard) Jenkins, Barbara (Lawrence) Jardine, Norma (Susie) (Basil) Cantwell, Roberta (Gerard) MacKinnon, Catherine (Danny) MacLean, Anna Parsons, Joan Laffin, Laura Lee (Colin) Bruce and Verna (Jeff) Spooney. By sisters Marie Nunn and Ella Mae Marsh and brother Nick Laffin. Dad is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife June (Howard), son David and grandson Kevin Laffin. Also his brothers, William, Terence, Johnny and Danny and sisters, Laura, Francis, Irene and a sister in infancy. Following Dad’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home. A private family service will be held at a later date. He was predeceased by his parents John and Pearl (Hawley). He is survived by his loving wife Linda Nie. Cherished father of Laura (Paul) Woodhouse, John (Margaret) Price, Martin (Vanessa) Nie and Laura Nie (David) Granger. Adored grandfather of Jarrett, Joe and David. Arrangements entrusted to Smith's Funeral Home, Burlington. Carol (Carson) Coldwell 71, Sydney River In the recent obituary for Carol Coldwell, a very special thanks to Dr. Paul Murphy was left out. Dr. Murphy went beyond the call of duty and provided enormous support to Carol and the family. Dr. Murphy is a wonderful, caring person, as well as a physician. Very sorry for the omission — John Coldwell and Family.
