Born in Christmas Island, on Jan. 6, 1928. He is survived by his loving wife Denise (Baril) of 40 years and one sister, Theresa 'Gracie' (Ernst) Udby of Christmas Island. He was predeceased by his parents Margaret C. (MacNeil) and Angus A. Bryden, six sisters, Hughena Leane, Mary Josephine MacNeil, Mary Catherine 'Tossel' MacNeil, Margaurite 'Rita' MacDougall, Sister Alena Bryden S.O.S., Irene Beaton; two brothers, Edward Leo Bryden,and John Joseph Bryden, and four siblings in infancy. He leaves to mourn many special nephews, nieces and friends. He graduated with a B.A. at St. Francis Xavier University, attended St. Joseph Seminary in Edmonton, and obtained a M.A. at the University of Alberta. He served in the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton, Federal Government Indian Affairs and as Chaplain with Correctional Service Canada until his retirement in 1999. Bernie had a warm engaging personality, was a principled man of deep faith who always left a lasting impression with anyone who met him. A Prayer Service and Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m., at Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Chapel, 9 Muir Dr., St. Albert. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Archbishop Joseph N. MacNeil and assisted by Rev. Born Aug. 11, 1951, in Glace Bay, N.S., she was a daughter of Ernest and Helen (Coffin) McKenzie. Anita was the proud mother of daughter, Margo and son, Kevin. Anita was assistant manager of the Gagetown Credit Union from 1978-1991. She enjoyed crafts, quilting, gardening, travelling and listening to music. She was very much a part of the community of Glace Bay and taking care of her mother and father. She quilted a poppy quilt for the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #3 as a memorial to the veterans. Anita was a wonderful person to her family and friends. Sadie Christina Mac Kenzie Born In: Fourchu Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 18th, 2014 Sadie Christina Mac Kenzie, 92, formerly of 134 George St., Sydney, passed away peacefully Saturday Jan. 18, 2014, at the Truro hospital. Born in Fourchu, daughter of the late Edwin and Nellie (Mac Leod) Severance. Sadie is survived by her sons Fraser Jr. (Helen) and Rodger (Arlene) and by her daughter Sandra (George) Fraser and by her 10 grandchildren and her 14 great-grandchildren. She belonged to Club 55 and Branch 12 Ladies Auxiliary. She worked at Sobeys in Sydney and Sydney River. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her passion was her crafts and knitting. She will be sadly missed by all. Sadie was predeceased by her husband Fraser and by her sisters, Vickie, Annie and Lottie and her brothers, Edwin and Robert. Born in Whitney Pier on March 2, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John M. ‘Dan C.’ and Millie (Lappin) MacNeil. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, and an awe inspiring 'Nanny'. She took great pride in her marriage and her family, both of which brought her endless joy. A beautiful and gentle soul, filled with compassion and love for others, she took great pleasure in the simple things that life had to offer, such as baking blueberry pie with her grandchildren, caring for her cat, or simply spending time in the kitchen with the teapot filled, chatting with family and friends. Her cooking skills will be missed, as will her sweet tooth. Phyllis Musgrave Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: January 17th, 2014 The family of Phyllis (Nash) Musgrave regret to announce her death which occurred on Jan. 17, 2014, at The Northside Community Guest Home. She had been a resident of North Sydney for almost all of her life until moving to the Guest Home in February of 2010. Her death happened as a result of declining health over the past 10 years. Phyllis was the daughter of the late Jack and Ruth (Lamey) Nash. Phyllis was a proud graduate of Thompson High School, class of 1964. She attended Nova Scotia Teachers College for two years and began her teaching career at 20 years of age. She later upgraded her teaching licence to a TC 5 which was equivalent to a Bachelor of Education. Phyllis was a talented, dedicated and much loved teacher at Balls Creek Elementary for 32 years. Her Thanksgiving dinners which she organized with the parents are fondly remembered by all involved. She was always one to be deeply involved in the many concerts that occurred at Balls Creek Elementary. Following her retirement in 1998, she was a substitute teacher in the Northside area schools for approximately two years but had to stop due to poor health. Entertaining was a major part of her life and Christmas was her favourite day of the year. Phyllis was a fantastic cook and loved to feed as many people as she could fit into the family home. She decorated the home for every holiday, including Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Thanksgiving. There are not many crafts that Phyllis did not try and sewing was the one in which she excelled. Her ultimate creation was a wedding dress that she made for her sister-in-law, Anne. Phyllis had a real gift for gardening. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 45 years, Ray; and her three sons, Stuart (Erin) Moncton, David (Anne) Oshawa, and Stephen (Michelle), Toronto. She is survived by brothers, Walter (the late Minnie) Nash of Innisfil, Ont., and Graham (Marie) Nash of Pembroke, Ont. She is also survived by the extended Musgrave family of which she was a vital part. Martin was the son of the late Dan Angus and Catherine (MacLellan) Beaton of Blackstone, Inverness County. Having been predeceased by his loving wife of 42 years, Joan (McNamara), he is survived by his sons, Tommy (Brenda), Port Hawkesbury; Jason (Aya) and Christopher (Rina), of Calgary; three grandchildren, Daniel and his mom, Trish MacLean; Alexis and Finley Beaton, all of Port Hawkesbury. Martin is also survived by brothers, Finley (fiancé Kay Chisholm), Antigonish; Angus (Marilyn), Bedford; Alexander, Stewartdale; Ambrose (Cathy), Eastern Passage; Kevin (Mary), Malcolm (Marguerite), Blackstone; and sisters, Teresa Schieck, Michigan; Marie (Ron) Martineau, Bruderheim, Alta; Marcella Phillips (Alex MacKinnon), Inverness; Margaret Hawley, Millville; Marian (Rannie) MacLellan, Long Point. He is also survived by parents-in-law, Mable and Frank Cambria; sisters-in-law, Lorraine (Celeste) and Margaret (Robert) Fitzpatrick, all of Boston, Mass.; as well as many nieces and nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by brothers-in-law, James Schieck, Clyde Phillips, Angus Hawley and sister-in-law, Rosalia Beaton. Martin was retired from STORA Paper Mill, Port Hawkesbury, and he will be remembered as a strong advocate for the cause of unionism and the rights of the working class. He was a long time member of CEP Local 972 and served in several positions on the local executive and various committees. He was a strong supporter of the NDP party, was twice a provincial candidate for the Inverness South riding and worked as campaign manager for subsequent candidates in his riding. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43 and enjoyed attending social activities with his friends there. His interests included: following hockey, particularly supporting his sons’ and grandchildren’s hockey programs; playing cards, four-wheeling, attending ceilidhs; story-telling and joking. Martin was well known for his great sense of humour and quick wit which endeared him to all who knew him. He maintained his humour throughout his lengthy illness, even to the very end. Albert Digero Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: January 8th, 2014 It is with great sadness the family of Albert 'Blackie' Digero announces his passing on Jan. 8, 2014 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Rene and Juliet (Matthys) Digero. Albert was a coal miner in his earlier years, could fix anything, was an electrician and did T.V. repairs. He was an avid outdoors man and loved to hunt and fish with his brothers at Hunters Mountain and his favorite pastime was boating on the Bras D'or Lakes. Alexander Webber Born In: Spotted Island Labrador Passed in: Little Lorraine Passed on: January 17th, 2014 It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Alexander L. Webber at the age of 76, on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at home, peacefully with his family. Born on Spotted Island Labrador, he was the son of the late Barton Webber and Rhoda (Turnbull) Webber Kennedy Boutilier. Alex worked at National Sea Products for 45 years. He joined the work force at the age of 14 and was employed there until the plant closed. He was also a member of the “Special Constable Service” for the town of Louisbourg. He was an active lobster fisherman and he belonged to the Bateston Fire Department. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 55 years, Margaret (MacMillan); daughters, Bev (Lloyd) Snow, Pictou, Cecilia, Ontario and son-in-law, Lester Ward, Maureen (Daniel), Mira, Jeanette (Jerry) Dykstra, Marathon, Ontario; sons, Darrell (Chickie) and Robie (Raylene). Funeral arrangements are under the direction of … Evan 'Sonny' MacDonald Born In: Sydney Born: March 28th, 1938 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 17th, 2014 On Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, Sonny passed away peacefully in the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney on March 28, 1938, he was the son of the late Janet MacDonald. When Sonny was a young boy, he and his mother came to live in Grand River Falls at the home of Malcolm and Mary Morrison. For most of his life, Sonny worked as a labourer. When he move to Glace Bay, he became fondly know as 'Canon' to his friends. In his later years, he could be seen pushing his cart around the town and talking to the many people who showed kindness to him. In April 2013, he became a resident of Victoria Haven, until his hospitalization in November. He is survived by his dear friend, Lila Poirier, Glace Bay and also by, Sandy and Judy Morrison, Grand River Falls. Besides his mother, Sonny was predeceased by Malcom and Mary Morrison. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and in Grand River Presbyterian Church on Tuesday from 1-3 p.m., followed by a service at 3 p.m., with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating.
