Born in Weymouth, N.S., she was the loving daughter of the late William and Mabel (Dale) Brooks. Eline was raised in Weymouth and upon graduation from high school she went on to take secretarial training at the Sir George William College in Montreal and remained there to work for Sears. She later moved to Sydney to care for her brother Dale and his children. Eline was a talented knitter who took great pleasure in creating many beautiful knitted items for her loved ones. She will be greatly missed by her surviving sisters, Gwen Vibert, Sydney, Joyce Ward, New York, Marjorie Dixon, Australia, and her brother Noel (wife Estelle) Brooks, Bible Hill. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Joan Brooks, North Sydney, a lifelong friend Nellie Theriault, Weymouth, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Eline was predeceased by her dear sister and her husband Noreen and Jack Ward, New York, brothers, Dale and Irvin Brooks, brothers-in-law, Kerr Vibert, Richard Ward and John Dixon. The family would like to thank Dr. John Kirkpatrick and all of Eline’s loving care givers at the Northside Community Guest Home for the care and compassion shown to her during the time spent under your care. In honour of Eline’s wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date in Weymouth. Arrangements have been entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Online condolences to Rita Carmella Gouthro Born In: Reserve Mines Passed in: Reserve Mines Passed on: January 11th, 2014 It is with great sadness and fond memories, we the family announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Rita Carmella 'Cardy' Gouthro. Rita was called to her Lord on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, where she had resided for the past four years, with her loving family at her side. Born and raised in Reserve Mines, Rita was the youngest of ten children of the late David and Bridget (MacEachern) Hill. She resided most of her life on Centerville Street, Reserve Mines. Rita was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In today's world, Rita would be described as a "stay-at-home mom". A devoted wife, mother and mentor, Rita spent her entire adult life caring for the material and spiritual needs of her family. She was a devout member of St. Joseph's Church. Her faith in God and the Holy Mother were unwavering. One of her true enjoyments outside of home was her regular weekly bingo games with her bingo gals. Rita had a natural ability and passion for baking, which she enjoyed sharing with her family and friends. Her nurturing demeanour was always present in the value and love shown to her family. Rita will be sadly missed by her daughter, Joan (Adrian) Martell, Glace Bay; sons, Joseph, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Greg (Rina), Reserve Mines. Nannie is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Leigha, Gregory, Brennan, Monique, Karen, Adrian, Cindy, Leone, Lucette, John, Donnie as well as 15 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, Rita was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Tom in 1997, sisters, Mary, Imelda, Sarah, Agnes, Laura, brothers, James, David, Simon , Joe and grandson, Russell. The family are keeping with Rita’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Fr. Daniel Boudreau will be officiating. Interment will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Emeline (Marsh) Turner Born In: Mill Creek Born: August 3rd, 1920 Passed in: Mill Creek Passed on: January 11th, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Emeline Turner at the Northside General Hospital on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014. Born in Mill Creek, on Aug. 3, 1920, she was the daughter of the late John and Emma (Jessome) Marsh. Emeline was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or. Mom was an especially strong woman who worked hard to raise and provide for her children. She enjoyed spending her days picking berries in her blueberry field, knitting, quilting, baking, playing cards and loved visits from her family, especially her grandson David. Surviving her are three sons, Jack (Laurie), Millcreek, Bill (Marilyn), Port Hawkesbury, Tom (Marian), Millcreek and five daughters, Genevieve Parsons, Halifax, Diane Turner (Art Mertens), Millville, Linda (John) Bertacco, Toronto, Margaret (Tony) Figliomeni, Toronto, and Marie Turner (Billy Ivey), North Sydney. Also surviving her are 23 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; brothers, Louis (Norma) Marsh, Peter (Betty) Marsh; sister, Margaret Harrington and daughter-in-law, Jean Penny. Besides her parents, Emeline was predeceased by her husband David, son David Jr., and one son in infancy. She was also predeceased by brothers, Theodore, Wilfred, James, Gerald, Tommy, Lawrence, Sylvester, sisters, Marcella, Mary, Regis, Evelyn, Marie and grandson Lloyd Parsons. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Elizabeth MacCormick and the staff at My Cape Breton Home for Seniors, who made our mom and our family feel like it was truly home. A sincere thank you to the staff at the palliative care unit at the Northside General Hospital for their kindness and caring. A private viewing for family will be held at J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of her life will take place on Wednesday Jan.15, 2014, 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church Bras d'Or, with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Colt Noel Phillips-Bernard Born In: Inverness, Canada Passed in: We’koqma’q First Nation, Canada Passed on: January 8th, 2014 Colt Noel Phillips-Bernard, 29, We’koqma’q First Nation, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Inverness, he was a son of Keith Clayton Bernard and Clare Phillips of We’koqma’q. He was a member of Blessed Kateri Parish Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, We’koqma’q. Surviving are his daughter, Riel and her mother, Melissa Peters, Edmonton; son, Kenneth and his mother, Sammy Jo Googoo, We’koqma’q; chosen brothers, Curt, Dez, Tony Bear, Nicholas, Josh Carlos, Jarrett, Dob, Monk, Troy, Victor, Roo and Bunj; aunts, Ida Marshall, Magit Poulette, Gloria Marshall, Gail Marshall, Kim Julian, Judy Julian, Christine Googoo, Krista Thompson, Flo Young and Lillian Marshall; uncles, Rod Phillips, George Junior Marshall, Danny Marshall, Robert 'Rocket”'Marshall; grand uncle, Grand Chief Ben W.
