Born in Port Hood on August 18th, 1943, Margaret was a daughter of the late John Joseph and Catherine (MacDonald) MacKenzie. She was a member of St. Peter’s Church, Port Hood. Margaret is survived by her son, John Donald; four grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, John Alex, Prince George, BC.; Hughie (Sylvia) and Alex (Patsy), Inverness; sisters Mary Bond, Toronto, Ont.; Jessie Ann Bond, Judique; Theresa MacPhee, New Glasgow. She was predeceased by her husband, Alex Camus; brothers Charles, Donald, Angus and Neil, many nieces and nephews. Visitation was held on Saturday, January 25th, 2014 in St. Peter’s Church, Port Hood, with Funeral Mass following at 11:00 a.m., Fr. Vincent vanZutphen officiating. Burial is to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Central Inverness Palliative Care Society or to The Canadian Cancer Society. MacKINNON Frederick “Freddie” Duncan MacKinnon, age 76, passed away in the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on January 24th, 2014. Born in Inverness on October 16th, 1937, he was a son of the late Duncan J. and Ida E. (MacKinnon) MacKinnon. Freddie is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jeanette (McDonald) MacKinnon; daughters Margaret (Steven) LeBlanc and Deidre; sons Martin (Norma) and Bryce; grandchildren Emily, Brandon and Joel LeBlanc as well as Avery, Neil and Kathryn MacKinnon. Freddie is also survived by sister Betty (John) MacKinnon; brother-in-law Garry Myers; sister-in-law Danena; many nieces, nephews and extended family. A graduate of Provincial Normal College and a 1968 graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, Freddie taught primarily at the Inverness Consolidated School. He also served as a justice of the peace for the Province of Nova Scotia. Freddie was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a devoted community man who was a charter member with the Kinsmen. Freddie spent time with both minor and high school hockey teams (in between cheering for his Montreal Canadiens), minor baseball and could always be seen enjoying an afternoon or evening card of harness racing at the local oval. Freddie loved to play cards and will forever be remembered as a family man. Freddie is predeceased by sisters Florence and Anna; brothers Malcolm, David and Edwin. Visitation was held in Inverness Funeral Home on Sunday, January 26th and Monday, January 27th. Funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 28th at 3:00 p.m. in East Lake Church, East Lake Ainslie, with Rev. Louis Ihasz celebrating. Burial will be at a later date. Van ADESTINE Zabina Van Adestine passed peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 19th, 2014 at home in Mississauga. She is survived by her daughter Loret Riding, her sister Rita Lauzon, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. RIP YOUNG Melvin “Mel” Joseph Young, age 63, passed away Thursday, January 23rd, 2014, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by family. Mel was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, North East Margaree. Anyone who knew Mel knew how much he lovead spending time at his cabin in Margaree. He loved the outdoors, planting flowers, mowing grass, moose hunting, spending time with his family, his many friends and of course cheering on his favourite team, the Yankees. He enjoyed travelling south and his trips to New York City and Yankee Stadium. Mel worked in Toronto for many years, before moving back to Cape Breton, and worked as a truck driver for Ocean Paving, Port Hawkesbury. Mel’s favourite saying was “Once a friend, always a friend, even to the end” and “Yankees are the best, ask anyone who knows anything about baseball.” He is survived by his best friend and wife, Tena (Campbell) Young; son Blenise (Leela); and precious grandchildren Campbell, Rory, Jack; and K9 pal Chevy, mother Jean Baker. He is predeceased by his adoptive parents, Alex and Elizabeth (Ross) Young, and his biological father, the late Robert Hood (North Sydney); his siblings, Dennis and Alex Young; his sister, Hughena Hannigan; and nephew Brian Hannigan. No visitation by family request. Funeral mass was held in St. Patrick’s Church, North East Margaree on Tuesday, January 28th at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating, concelebrated by Fr. Hughie D. MacDonald, burial following in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to St. Patrick’s cemetery fund, North East Margaree.
