Born on May 17, 1919 in Ingonish to Angus and Annabelle Gillis. She was a lifetime member of St. Peter's Parish Catholic Church, Ingonish. Marie was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her daughters: Linda Donovan, Lexie MacNeil, Lorraine Hardy and Debbie Williams (Norman). Also surviving are her precious grandchildren Laurie Donovan (Timmy Hawley), Dawn MacLean (Mike Collins), Jeff MacLean (Glorie MacDougall), Mandy Esliger (Keith), Matthew Hardy, Graham Hardy, Tanya Williams (Dwayne Lewis) and Michael Williams (Kyla) and great grandchildren Dylan & Daniel Hawley, Hayden MacLean, Rowan Collins, Nolan Lewis and Ocean Williams. Predeceased by husband Cecil in 1982; grandson Jamie Hardy; her parents Angus and Annabelle and her sisters: Julia Blundon, Maude Williams, Anne Gregory, Helen MacDonald, Mary Stella Gillis, Gertrude Lesnick and brothers: Ronald, Alex, John, David and Walter. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Memorial donations can be made to St. Peter's Parish or Palliative Care or a charity of one's choice John Stapleton Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: January 8th, 2014 It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of our father, John 'Jack' Stapleton, on Wednesday Jan. 8, 2014, at the Camp Hill Veteran's Memorial Hospital, Halifax. Born in 1925, to the late Catherine and Francis Stapleton. John was predeceased by his wife Scelina; brothers, Louis, Thomas; sisters, Maude, Margaret, Edith, Catherine, Elizabeth. John joined the army in 1944. He served overseas in WW11 with the 17th Duke of York's, in the armoured corps, in the European Theater. On returning home, he worked at the Sydney steel mill, Irving Oil Company, and the Point Edward Naval Base, where he became a Fire Fighter. He served in the capacity with the government, both their and at the Sydney Airport. During this time he also served as a volunteer fire fighter, in the community, was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, sat on the board of directors for the Sydney Credit Union, assisted with building Holy Rosary Church, was a member of the Holy Rosary Men's Club, and assisted in various capacities with the church. Upon retiring, John started golfing and was an avid member of Seaview Golf Club. He will be lovingly remembered by his son, John (Nancy); daughter, Marilyn (Brian) Bowers; grandchildren, Marianna Stapleton, Kelleah (Steve) Anstey, Kerri (Rob) Kay; great-grandchildren, Kurtis, Julie Anstey, Tanner and Molly Kay; sister-in-law, Phyllis Lind, nieces Janice, Joyce and Jennifer; sister-in-law Eileen; niece, Diana Steel; sister-in-law, Rose Lind, and many nieces and nephews. His love for his wife and family remain till the end, the number one priority in his life. His humour and winning personality endeared him to the hearts of all who knew him. Mullins Hood Born In: Florence Born: March 23rd, 1916 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: January 10th, 2014 The family of Mullins Daniel Hood, age 97, regret to announce his passing on Friday, January 10, 2014 at the Northside General Hospital. Mullins was born in Florence, on March 23, 1916, to the late Wilson and Maria (Ross) Hood and moved to Little Bras d'Or at an early age. Mullins started his working career at an early age of 9 years old, working heavy horses on construction of the Georges River Road. He was employed at Fairhome Farm for a short time during the summer, the Bras d'Or Coal Company and Marine Atlantic, but his true passion was farming. Mullins owned and operated "Morning Acre Farm", breeding and raising his prized Registered Ayrshire dairy cattle, producing milk for British Canadian Co-op, Sydney Mines and Hersh's Dairy, Sydney. He also showed his cattle at various exhibitions throughout the province. Mullins was an active member of the Cape Breton Federation of Agriculture and the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture. Mullins also served as Manager of the Cape Breton County Exhibition from 1960 to approximately 1975. Upon retiring from dairy farming, Mullins bred and trained race horses and traveled throughout Nova Scotia with "Wild Chance" at stud. Finding retirement too confining, Mullins returned to the workforce employed by Neil J. Walker Lumber Ltd. and finished his working career working for his son at Circle H Products Ltd. His leisure time was then spent tending his flower and rose gardens and mowing the lawns. During the summers, up until 2006, he assisted his son and friend Gordon Carter in hay making. Popie's greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren. The month of June would see him on vacation in New Hampshire with granddaughter Bobby Jo, August he was off to PEI for "Old Home Week" and the horse races with grandson Daniel, during the fall touring the mainland exhibitions with granddaughter Linda, and in the autumn it was trips around the Cabot Trail and fall colors with granddaughter Beverly. Popie made several trips to New York and spent a Christmas with granddaughter Marianne in Germany. Mullins is survived by his only son, Robert C. and daughter-in-law Audrey (Lovett) Hood. Also surviving are his five grandchildren; Linda (Michael) Jobe, Truro, Beverly (Robert) MacLean, Groves Point, Marianne, Germany, Bobby Jo (Darren) Whalen, Halifax and Daniel (Jennifer Taylor), Georges River, his nine great-grandchildren Bradley & Lauren Jobe, Taylor & Katelyn MacLean, Breton, Matti & Dhani Whalen and Drew & Ryan Hood. Mullins is also survived by his sister Aries MacMillan, North Sydney and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Mullins was predeceased by his wife Mary (Mullins) Hood; a son in infancy; brothers Robert W., Joseph, William and John and sisters Mary Christensen and Adeline Sturmy, nephews William 'Bill' Hood and Harvey Jensen. Catherine Biron (MacLeod) Born In: Stirling, Canada Passed in: Sydney, Canada Passed on: January 9th, 2014 Catherine Mary (MacLeod) Biron, MacGillivary Guest Home, formerly of Brown St., Sydney, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2014 at the MacGillivary Guest Home, at the age of 95. Born in Stirling, Richmond Co., N.S. she was the daughter of the late Kenneth (William) Neil and Mary Tina (Patterson) MacLeod. Catherine was a homemaker for her three sons and husband, plus a bookkeeper for her husband Claude's automotive repair business. She is survived by her son, Keats (Brenda Noseworthy), Sydney/Florida; and daughters-in-law, Judy (Hillen) Biron, Sydney, and Lynn Roper, Sydney/Florida. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Effie MacPherson, Mary Margaret Munroe, both of Marion Bridge and brother, William 'Willie', MacGillivary Guest Home. She was predeceased by her husband, Claude; sons, Roger and Kenzie and a daughter in infancy; grandsons, Kevin and Keats; granddaughter Paula (Biron) LeVatte and her two children, Alyssa and Blake; sister, Dolena (Camille Tremblett), Quebec, Annie MacLeod; brother, Sam (Eleanor) MacLeod, Sydney. Betty Sampson passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014. Born in Gardiner Mines, Betty was the daughter of Regena 'Gina' (Cameron) and the late Cecil Farrow. Betty was a former employee of Stream. She obtained a floral design degree. As well as loving all types of flowers, she enjoyed crocheting, sketching and poetry. She had a great sense of humour. Betty was a loving and caring wife and mother. Her family was everything to her. She was loved by all. Betty will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 40 years, Aeldred; sons, Derek (Bernice), Cecil (Kelly); sisters, Paula, Geraldine; brothers, Cecil, Duncan, Billy, Adrian, cherished grandchildren, Tyler, Gauge and Makyla. Also surviving is a special aunt, Genevieve O'Brien, who was more like a mother to Betty. The family are keeping with Betty's wishes. There will be no visitation. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Laughlin and Cassie (MacNeil) MacLean. Carmel was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, John; daughters, Yvonne (Gordon) MacVicar, Coxheath, Anne (Don MacIsaac), Sydney and Claire (John) MacPhee, East Bay; sons, John (Victoria), Woodstock, N.B., Joseph (Brenda), Dutch Brook and Phillip (Jo-Ann), P.E.I.; brothers, Wilfred 'Red', Pictou and Art, Ancaster, Ont. She was dearly loved by her grandchildren, Doug, Angela, Lisa, Jason, Joey, Victor, Cindy, Natalie, Matthew, Luke and Cole; and 17 great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her good friends, Thelma Schaller and Tina MacPhee-Pottie. Elly (Wall) Bekker van Stuivenberg Born In: Holland Born: April 3rd, 1946 It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our dear sister, Elisabeth Henrica Bekker - van Stuivenberg 'Elly' surrounded by her loving family. Born in Holland April 3, 1946 she was the daughter of the late William Wall (Billy) and Wilhelmina Van Stuivenberg. Elly was a beautiful wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She lived life to the fullest and loved her visits to Canada to see her family. She will be greatly missed. Verta (Spencer) Calvert Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: January 9th, 2014 Four days after her 90th birthday on Jan. 9, 2014, Verta Elaine Calvert passed away, peacefully, in the 4 North Unit of the Glace Bay General Hospital. Nee Spencer, Verta was the youngest and last surviving of seven children born to Thomas and Louise (Phillips) Spencer and she lived all her life in the family home on Bay Street. By profession, Verta was a school teacher, having taught at Bridgeport, Central School and for 30 years after her retirement, to raise her family, she worked as a substitute teacher at Morrison High and other Glace Bay schools. Verta was a faithful congregant and choir member of the United Baptist Church, a member of the Genevieve Morrison Missionary Guild and in her younger days she served as a C.G.I.T leader. As a homemaker, Verta's particular joys were baking ,knitting, tatting and crocheting. Those of us who survive her have a legacy of her fine work. In her later years, Verta caught the "Travel Bug" and she was an enthusiastic tourist to places such as Great Britian, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Israel. It was on one such trip to London, at a west end theatre, she was selected from the audience and appeared on stage with Dame Edna Everidge, to great acclaim. The memory of Verta's forthright views on subjects and her sense of humour in expressing such views will remain vibrant to all who knew her. In addition to her parents and siblings, Verta was predeceased in 1989 by her husband of 37 years, John Calvert and her grandson, Todd Calvert, in 2005. She is survived by two sons, Stuart (Richard), Cambridge, England and Loren (Marion), Glace Bay; two granddaughters, Kara (Trevor) Kruck, Enfield and Shannon Calvert, Sackville and two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Jacob; step-grandson, Alan MacDonald (Erin) and step-great-grandchildren, Brittany MacKenzie, Blayke and Emma. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews and great-great-great-nieces and nephews! John Francis Currie Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Kingston, Canada Passed on: January 5th, 2014 Proudly served with The Royal Canadian Signals, 1952-1983. Born and raised in Glace Bay, now of Kingston, Ont., John died peacefully, at Hastings Manor, surrounded by the love of family, on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014. John Currie, age 79, loving father of Brenda Lloyd (Gary) of Frankford, Terry Currie (Madonna) and Gregory Currie, both of Ottawa. Affectionately known as 'Papa' to granddaughters Krista Lloyd of Frankford, Angie Alain of Gatineau and great-grandfather of Chloe Alain.
