Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Clara Grace (Pieroway) Rose. Gertrude was a member of St. Joseph parish, North Sydney, she volunteered at the Salvation Army retail outlet and in her younger years was an avid walker. Gertrude is survived by her two sons, Donald (Jane) Dunphy, North Sydney, Victor (Barb) Dunphy, Kentville; by her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; by her brothers, Ronald (Shirley) Rose, Jackie (Sarah) Rose, James (Wilma) Rose, Andrew (Diana) Rose, all of North Sydney, Gerry (Donna) Rose, Westmount, Llewellyn (Paulette) Rose, Dartmouth; by her sisters, Ada Haggerty and Bertha (Lenny) McCormick, both of Sydney Mines. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Dunphy, also by brothers, Dave, Maurice and Wilfred Rose and sisters, Pamela Boyden, Ruby Harnish, Zita Fowler, Edith Corkery, Ann Holland and Nell Coulet. In accordance with Gertrude’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A private family graveside committal service will take place at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com Christena Pauline (MacKinnon) MacDonald Born In: Shenacadie Passed in: Coxheath Passed on: January 13th, 2014 We regret to announce the passing of our loving mother and grandmother, Christena Pauline MacDonald, 91, of Coxheath. As she wished Christena passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 13, 2014, surrounded by her family. Born in Shenacadie, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Sarah (MacAdam) MacKinnon. Christena took great pride in her Scottish heritage, travelling to Scotland several times to trace her roots. She was a fluent Gaelic speaker and former member of the Gaelic Society. She loved spending time “up the country” (at Shenacadie). Christena was a very religious woman devoted to her Catholic faith and St. Anne de Beaupré. She enjoyed cooking for others, especially her cherished granddaughter Emily. Mom was happiest surrounded by all her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gardening and planting flowers was always a favorite pastime. She is survived by her loving children, Eugene, Coxheath, Mary (Louis) Digout, River Bourgeois, and Irene (Peter) Long, Coxheath; cherished grandchildren, Suzanne (Ken) Miles, Michael (Shannon) Long, Stephen (Jill) Long, Emily Long, Louis Digout, Jackie Digout and Mark Digout; great-grandchildren, Christina, Sarah, Kaitlyn Miles and Mikie, Rhiannon, Xander Long. Christena was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene; son, John, sisters, Mary and Elizabeth and brothers, Neil and Rannie. Theresa Phillippo Born In: Sydney Mines Born: August 6th, 1936 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 12th, 2014 Theresa Patricia Phillippo passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Jan. 12, 2014, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Center. Born Aug. 6, 1936, in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine Wassilaskus. Theresa was an avid member of the CWL and helped to raise countless foster children along with her own seven children, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Shirley Garnier. Left to morn her passing are her sons, Gerald (Melanie), Raymond (Denise); daughters, Sherry her guardian angel, Glenda (Robbie), Connie (David), Janice (Wayne) and Kimberley; her 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by the love of her life Maurice and brother Joseph. There will be no visitation and a celebration of her life will be held Thursday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. John Swan Born In: Bras d'Or Born: September 16th, 1947 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 12th, 2014 Broken-hearted, we John's family, announce his peaceful passing on Jan. 12, 2014, at the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Bras d'Or, on Sept. 16, 1947, John was the son of the late Oscar and Agnes (MacDonald) Swan. John had raced cars in his youth, and maintained an avid interest. A strong NDP supporter, and active in the movement with the ILA Marine Atlantic, John held the office of secretary. He continued his efforts in the office of secretary for Marine Atlantic Pensioners Society. His favourite activity was dancing and karaoke with Alice. He has "sailed the lakes" for a number of years before his perminant employment with Marine Atlantic, until his retirement in 2007. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a baby brother, Cletus, and a much loved stepson, Jason Swan (MacNeil). John is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Alice (McNeil) and her children, Jordan, Jonathan and Bryant Hynes. Siblings, all of Bras d'Or, Frances (Joseph) Howley, Sylvia (Earl) Cantwell, Freda Swann, also, niece Valerie Hussey, N.B. , and brother, Barry Swan. Born in MacAdam’s Lake, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary Elizabeth (Currie) MacDonald. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, playing tarabish and bingo. Mary Phyllis Burns Born In: Westmount, Canada Passed in: Westmount, Canada Passed on: January 10th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Phyllis Burns, 71, of Westmount, on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014. Born in Westmount, Phyllis was the daughter of the late James and Albertine (Thompson) Burns. She was a member of Holy Rosary parish, Westmount. Phyllis is survived by her son, Ralph (Nancy); grandson, Tyler (Chelsea) Phillips; special young man, Travis Phillips; brothers, Wessie (Anne-Marie) Burns and James Burns. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Phyllis will be sadly missed by family and friends, especially, her cat, Angel. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary and sister, Bernice Williams. Phyllis loved to have a good laugh and her sense of humour was contagious to everyone who knew her. A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Douglas Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. Born and raised in River Ryan, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Harriett and Barney Quinn. Florence was a dedicated and passionate teacher for 31 years at St. Michael's School as well as working with the Speech and Hearing Department. Surviving are her sons, Michael (Shelley), Medicine Hat, Alta., Gerald (Nancy), Enfield, N.S.; daughter, Jennifer (Guy Lamey), New Victoria, N.S.; six grandchildren, Lindsey, Jillian, Gerald, Victoria, Joseph and Thomas; four sisters, Joanie (Gerald) Burke, Bernice (Lionel) King, River Ryan, Greta (Leo) MacKinnon, New York, and Lorraine (David) Sheppard, Lingan, N.S. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Shirley (Mickey) MacKinnon and husband Chester Webb. In honour of her wishes, there will be a private family visitation at V.J. Florence Jane (Ferguson) Johns Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 12th, 2014 Florence Jane Johns passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, in her 90th year at the Cove Guest Home in Sydney. She was the eldest daughter of five girls born to the late Elizabeth (Ives) and Rod Ferguson. After raising her family, Florence left Sydney Mines and enrolled in the CNA program at the Nova Scotia Hospital in Dartmouth. She completed the course and obtained her CNA’s, achieving the second highest mark on the provincial exams. She remained a valued employee of the Nova Scotia Hospital for over 20 years. It was during this time she met and married the late Carl Johns and they spend nine and a half happy years together. Florence is survived by her daughters, Betty (Dennis) Robello of Point Edward, Margie (Walter) Charlesworth of PEI, and her sons, Rod (Linda) Tobin of Ontario, and Ron (Mauda) Tobin of Mira as well as her youngest sister Alice (George) Beckwith of Sydney. She is also survived by her grandchildren whom she loved dearly — Kyle Ferguston, Lisa Tomko, Kelly Charlesworth, Colin Charlesworth, Kenzie (Tobin) Launiere, Katie Tobin, Sean, Derrick and Terri Tobin and, to whom she was “Nanny who made the best cinnamon buns in the world.” Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband and father of her children Bill (the Barber) Tobin, her second husband Carl Johns as well as sisters Mary Moore, Margie Luker and Catherine Jackson. At Florence’s request, cremation has taken place with Interment to follow at a later date. Her children would like to thank the caregivers at the Cove Guest Home who cared for their Mom especially in her final week, with the utmost loving care — we could not be more grateful. Sandy ( Joseph) ‘Soupy’ ‘Sandy D’ Devison Passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Hamilton General Hospital on January 11, 2014 in his 79th year. Beloved husband of Linda Devison of Dundas. Loving father of Martha and her husband Bill Robinson; George Devison and his wife Darlene; and Michelle Clark. Treasured grandfather of Steven (Nikki) Traver; Danielle & Korri Robinson; Lyndsay (Kyle) and baby-to-be Prytula; Justine Devison; and Lane, Chloe and Drew Clark. Proud Great-Grandpa of Reece and Kayden Traver. Sandy was a proud “Cape Bretoner” born in Glace Bay, N.S. He worked at Reid Press prior to becoming the “King of Pizza” in Hamilton’s west end for 19 years (1961-1980); and was an independent sales rep. for various florist wholesalers (Westbrook Floral, Action Imports, Sums) for 23 years. Sandy was an active member of the Hamilton Air Force Association, former member of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 38 in Sydney, N.S. He was actively involved during the 60’s and 70’s with the Westinghouse Old Boys’ Hockey Association, Hamilton Police Minor, and Alexander Park Association; in the 70’s and 80’s he served as Coach and General Manager of the Dundas Blues Jr. B Hockey Club; he was a Coach, Convenor, and Director of the Canusa Games for 30 years during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. His leisure hours were spent in hockey arenas throughout the country; he also enjoyed baseball, golf, dancing and spending what time he could at his greatest love — his bungalow “right on the ocean” at Mira Gut, Cape Breton, for 30 years.
