Martin was the son of the late Dan Angus and Catherine (MacLellan) Beaton of Blackstone, Inverness County. Having been predeceased by his loving wife of forty-two years, Joan (McNamara), he is survived by his sons, Tommy (Brenda), Port Hawkesbury; Jason (Aya) and Christopher (Rina), of Calgary; three grandchildren, Daniel and his mom, Trish MacLean; Alexis and Finley Beaton, all of Port Hawkesbury. Martin is also survived by brothers Finley (fiancée Kay Chisholm), Antigonish; Angus (Marilyn), Bedford; Alexander, Stewartdale; Ambrose (Cathy), Eastern Passage; Kevin (Mary), Malcolm (Marguerite), Blackstone; and sisters Teresa Schieck, Michigan; Marie (Ron) Martineau, Bruderheim, Alta; Marcella (Alex MacKinnon) Phillips, Inverness; Margaret Hawley, Millville; Marian (Rannie) MacLellan, Long Point. He is also survived by parents-in-law Mable and Frank Cambria; sisters-in-law Lorraine (Celeste) and Margaret (Robert) Fitzpatrick, all of Boston, Mass.; as well as many nieces and nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by brothers-in-law James Schieck, Clyde Phillips, Angus Hawley and sister-in-law Rosalia Beaton. Martin was retired from Stora Paper Mill, Port Hawkesbury, and he will be remembered as a strong advocate for the cause of unionism and the rights of the working class. He was a longtime member of CEP Local 972 and served in several positions on the Local executive and various committees. He was a strong supporter of the NDP party, was twice a provincial candidate for the Inverness South riding and worked as campaign manager for subsequent candidates in his riding. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43 and enjoyed attending social activities with his friends there. His interests included: following hockey, particularly supporting his sons’ and grandchildren’s hockey programs; playing cards; attending ceilidhs; story-telling and joking. Martin was well known for his great sense of humour and quick wit which endeared him to all who knew him. He maintained his humour throughout his lengthy illness, even to the very end. Visitation was held Tuesday, January 21st and 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. today, Wednesday with vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 22nd all in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 23rd from St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Father Conrad Edwards officiating, burial in the parish cemetery. FISET Kevin Fiset, age 46, of Grand Etang, Inverness County, died January 12th, 2014 in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp. Born in Cheticamp to Aurel and Germaine (Chiasson) Fiset, Kevin started fishing at the young age of 18, fishing crab with his uncles. He worked on several boats over the years until he took over his father’s lobster gear in 1997, which he did until 2013. Kevin lived for his wife and children whom he considered his biggest accomplishments. He had a passion for cooking and kept the family well fed. Kevin’s other passions were his research on boat history, pictures, and his many debates with friends. He will truly be missed by his many friends and his loving family. Kevin is survived by his wife, Tammie MacGregor Fiset; father Aurel Fiset; mother Germaine Fiset; son Brendon Fiset; daughter Hailey Fiset; sister Brenda Fiset-Doucet (Stephane); special niece and nephew Sophie and Thomas, whom he adored; mother-in-law Bernice MacGregor; sisters-in-law Jeannie MacGregor (John MacIntosh), Trudie MacGregor (Roger Muggah); as well as his very special nieces and nephews, Kim, JP “Jean Pierre,” Emily and Ben Poirier, Tyler, Philip, and Jennifer Aucoin, Gregor and Kayla Pattingale. The body rested at Cheticamp Funeral Home. Funeral mass was held on Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Condolences may be sent to: [email protected] GALE Janet “Doreen” Gale passed away surrounded by her loving family, Jan. 16th, at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. She was born in Inverness, Feb. 18th, 1951 to parents Walter and the late Marion (Phillips) Hinkley. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Howard Gale, Margaree. She is also survived by daughter Burdena (Steven) Atkins, Digby; sons Dougie (Amanda), Port Hawkesbury; Joseph (Patty), Tyson (Jennifer), Cory (Debbie), all of Margaree; grandchildren Steffaine, Kassy, Krysten, Marshall, Tyson, Kari Ann, Michael, Walter, Samantha, Devon, Kyla, Carson, Jacqueline, Kendra, Ronald; also great-grandchildren Jayden and Owen. Funeral service for the late Doreen Gale was held at Wilson United Church, Margaree Centre, on Sunday, Jan. 19th with DLM Norma Mills. Online condolences may be sent to: [email protected] MacDONALD Joseph Duncan “Joe Judique” MacDonald, 89, formerly of Coady Ave. Antigonish, N.S., passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on January 13th, 2014 at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home. Born June 14th, 1924 in Judique, he was the youngest child of the late Angus and MaryBelle (Chisholm) MacDonald. Joe had a great love and appreciation for his Scottish culture. His fluency in Gaelic and his love of Celtic music were important parts of his life. Joe loved to laugh and always had a kind word for those he met along the Main where he worked for over thirty years as a town constable. He was a dedicated volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross, the Cancer Society and the Kidney Foundation. Surviving are daughters Martha (Jane), Toronto; Anne (Bob Peters), SW Margaree; Mary (Chris Hill), Hammonds Plains; sons Hugh V (Charlotte), New Hampshire; Jody (Nancy), Purlbrook; Robert (Carolyn), Antigonish; grandchildren Seph, Meghan, Emma, Tim, Stewart, Andrew, Jack, Luke, Mealey, Innis, Fearghus, Sadie, Broghan, Hannah, Mollie, Alexander; great-grandchildren Fionn, Otis and Ira; brother John Dan, Judique; stepdaughters Barbara, Louise and Florence, all of Port Colborne, Ontario; as well as many nieces and nephews. MacDONALD We regret to announce the death of Robert “Bob” MacDonald which occurred in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, January 4th, 2014. He was born in New Waterford to Robert Douglas and Christina Florence (Hunt) MacDonald. Bob was a military police officer, with the Canadian Armed Forces; he was also a civilian police officer and after moving to Margaree was employed as a fishery officer, in the Margaree area. Bob was a member of St. Michael’s Parish, Margaree; he enjoyed fishing and loved his two dogs. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rebecca (Bebbington) MacDonald. Besides his parents he was predeceased by adopted sister Arethea Baker. There was no visitation. Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m., on January 8th in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, East Margaree, with Father Douglas MacDonald officiating. Condolences may be sent to [email protected] MacDONNELL Alex Duncan MacDonnell, age 84, Mabou, died peacefully in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on January 14th, 2014, after a lengthy illness. Born in Glengarry, Alex was the 11th child of John Andrew and Mary Cassie (Cameron) MacDonnell. He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, Mabou. Alex was a hard rock miner, and his work took him to many parts of Canada. He settled in Vancouver where they lived for many years. His love for Cape Breton took him back home in 1992 where he and Frances built their retirement home in Mabou. Their door was always open to family, friends and neighbours where a good cup of tea and a card game were waiting. Alex is survived by his wife, Mary Frances (MacDonald); son Bill (Monica) and granddaughters Karmyn and Kyra; brothers Angus Anthony (Edriz), Rod (Rita), Lawrence (Charlotte); sisters Rita (Jim), Colena, Annie, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers John A., Donald, Alexander, Malcolm, Jerome, Collie, John Francis; sisters Margie, Cassie and Janet. Visitation was held on Friday, January 17th in St. Mary’s Church Vestry, Mabou. Funeral mass was held on Saturday, January 18th at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou, with Fr. MORRISON Sterling Alexander Whitfield Morrison, age 78, passed away on Thursday, January 16th, 2014, at his home in Port Hood surrounded by his loving family. Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late Edward Watts and Laura Jane (Burke) Morrison. He was a member of St. Stephen’s/Jubilee United Church, Port Hood. He is survived by his children, Edward, Katherine (Ted MacDonald), Alexander (Julie Lynn Stanhope), Beulah (Gary Chandler), and Robert (Nadine Bollig); grandchildren Jessé, Maggie, Isaiah, Sterling Noah, Moriah, Jude, Isaac, Eden, Peyton, and Rowan. He is also survived by sisters Aileen, Margaret, Lorna, Matilda, Eloise, Janet and brother-in-law Kenny; many nieces, nephews, Cheryl Morrison. He will be dearly missed by the mother of his children, Patricia Pond. He will be fondly remembered by Angela, Steve and Crystal, who thought of him as a father. Sterling was predeceased by his grandsons, Jacob Morrison and Joel Chandler. Visitation was held in Port Hood and Area Resting Place on Saturday, January 18th, and Sunday, January 19th. Funeral service was held on Monday, January 20th at 11:00 a.m. in St. Stephen’s/Jubilee United Church, Port Hood, with Pastor Maggie Plant and Pastor Hugh Morrison concelebrating.
