Daniel completed a life of selfless dedication and devotion to his family, his faith and his community. He was an advocate for all things Mabou and championed the community at every turn. Daniel was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, and prayer was paramount in his life. Born on June 14th, 1926, he was the second youngest of 11 children in the family of Dr. Alex J. and Elizabeth Ann (MacNeil) MacNeil. Daniel’s birthday doubled as the anniversary date of his marriage to Margaret Helen (MacIntyre), who died in 2005 in their 50th-anniversary year. Daniel is survived by his seven children: Eric, Harold (Jo-Ann Rankin), Rod, Janet (Neil MacIsaac), John, Ann Marie (Tommy Chisholm) and Michael; his 12 grandchildren: Rae, Erin and Beth MacNeil, Carissa, Erica and Daniel MacIsaac, and Tara, Ashley, Siobhan, Meghan, Mark and Siona Chisholm; his brother, Stanley, his sister, Teresa Doyle, his sisters-in-law, Catherine MacNeil and Flora MacLellan; and his brother-in-law, Malcolm Parker, along with 27 nieces and nephews. Along with his parents and his wife, Daniel was predeceased by eight siblings: brothers Alexander, John, Donnie and Francis; and sisters Anna, Mary, Kaye and Marguerite; nephew Dougie MacCallum and niece Sandra MacNeil. Daniel lived a complete and balanced life centered around family, church and community. He learned the value of hard work at a young age and practised those traits as a truck contractor, a bus driver and as a longtime caretaker at St. Joseph’s Convent. For decades, he was an active proponent of Mabou as a hands-on community leader. He played a leading role in the construction of the pioneering Mabou Athletic Centre, an inspiration for similar facilities elsewhere in the county and beyond. He promoted the rink tirelessly, creating teams and leagues at every level and making the arena truly a community centre. Fittingly, his family’s property always sported a backyard rink, which was a haven for not only his own children, but also relatives, neighbours and members of the many large families that populated Mabou at the time. In similar fashion, he introduced many Mabou-and-area youth to Little League baseball, and he was a fixture each year running the horseshoe tournament at the Mabou Ceilidh. He was an active charter member of parish, co-op, credit union and community development committees, sports groups and the fire department. As a coach and bus driver for many years, he knew generations of past and present Mabou residents, many of whom thanked him and reminisced about those cherished days in recent years, often while Daniel was on his daily walks on the main street of Mabou. In retirement, he continued to enjoy county events and road trips, often in the company of his siblings Stanley and Teresa. He reached the end of a life journey that in the early years included trips with his father, a country doctor, throughout Cape Breton. Daniel earned and gave respect in his humble way. He was an avid news follower and storyteller who liked to inject humour and a fiddle tune along the way. He was a friend to many, and many will remember him. Visitation was held at St. Mary’s Church, Mabou, on Tuesday, Jan. 7th. Daniel’s funeral is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary’s Church, with Father Angus Morris officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery Fund, Mabou. On-line condolences can be sent to www.invernessfuneralhome.com.
