Ronnie passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family who stayed by his side throughout his courageous battle with cancer. Ronnie is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years Mrs. Christine Caroline ‘Carol’ (Deveaux). Ron and Carol not only are husband and wife but showed their children how to also be ‘best friends!’ Also surviving is one son, Robert (Suzanne); four daughters, Charlene (Glen) Roach, Ronalda (Bob) Chipman, Glenda (Randy) Getto and Carolann (Scott) MacLeod. Ron (Poppy) was also blessed with six grandchildren, Jessica, Jade, Brenden, Kevin, Stephanie and Kristen whom he cherished and adored. Ronnie is also survived by two sisters, Peggy (Jim) O’Halloran, Anne Marie (Gerry) Caulfield; three brothers, Harry (Flo), Greg and Peter; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews. Ronnie was predeceased by his parents, Charles ‘Charlie’ and Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ (Campbell) Steele, in-laws, Michael ‘Mitch’ and Genevieve ‘Jenny’ Deveaux, brothers, Ray ‘Bozo’ and Frank ‘Jocko’ and grandchild Adrian in infancy. Ronnie retired in 1992 from Sydney Steel where he worked for 36 years. He was a man of great faith. His love of God was evident throughout his life as he was a member of St. Leonard’s Parish Council and served as an usher and altar server for many years. Ronnie was a member of the Mount Carmel Gym Committee and Knights of Columbus. He was also a past boy scout leader. To say Ronnie enjoyed music would be an understatement. He loved so many different genres of music such as Marty Robbins, Bob Marley, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and the list goes on. Not only did Ronnie have rhythm but he had the moves. His whistle, like no other, will be missed and remain in our hearts forever. Ronnie enjoyed sports; he never missed his granddaughter Stephanie’s’ hockey games. He was an avid Jays, Leafs and Patriots fan. But most of all Ronnie loved family time, holidays, birthdays and suppers around the table. No matter how he was feeling he would never miss an important event. His family was his pride and joy and we felt it every day. Ronnie will be missed by all who had the pleasure of meeting him. He had a beautiful smile that would warm your heart. He was soft-spoken, generous and compassionate. A simple pat on your hand would show his kindness. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass of celebration for Ronnie will take place Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery, New Waterford. 'Bob' Macdonald Born In: Sydney Born: December 26th, 1931 Passed in: Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: January 28th, 2014 R.R. 'Bob' Macdonald (CLU), 83, Truro, formerly of Sydney, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, after a lengthy illness. Born Dec. 26, 1931, in Sydney, he was a son of the late Edward and Elsie (Sangster) Macdonald. Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Maisie (MacEachern); son, Robert (Patricia), Sydney; daughter, Maureen (Wayne) MacLean, Truro; brother-in-law, Donald (Mary) MacEachern, Glendale; devoted grandfather 'Papa' to his granddaughters, Ainsley, Kristen, Jennifer, Laura and great-grandchildren, Ella and Daniel; sister, Mary Macdonald, Sydney. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Father Sangster Macdonald; sisters, Thora Macdonald, Anna in infancy. Bob spent many years in the insurance industry working for Maritime Life. He received his CLU designation and moved from Sydney to head office in Halifax where he continued on to Ontario as branch manager in several Ontario cities. Upon returning to Cape Breton in 1970, Bob continued to work as an independent insurance agent until his retirement. Bob's family was the cornerstone for his existence and he was a friend to many. He will be remembered most for his vibrant personality, infectious sense of hum! our and love of animals; traits he passed onto his children and family. Pleased to call him friend, proud to call him Dad and honoured to have loved, Bob you will be missed. Barbara Campbell Born In: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 28th, 2014 Barbara Marjorie Campbell, of Duffell Drive, Mira Road, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Byron and Marjorie (Baker) Bowes. Barbara spent her childhood years in Dartmouth, N.S. Always an active member of the United Church, CGIT leader, organizing plays and volunteer work. She enjoyed the simple things in life like gardening, reading, fishing, playing cards, baking and the company of great friends and family. Barbara was a beautiful piano player, taking after her mother. She loved to sing, and had a deep love for music that she shared with all. Many hours were spent around a piano singing with her family in her youth. Barbara took great pride in her contribution to her church and her community. She was a church elder, chair of ministry and personnel committee, and chair of Congregation and Church Council at First United Church during a challenging three years. Most recently, she enjoyed rummaging at yard sales and attending the Farmers Market each week with her husband John. Barbara treasured her grandchildren who brought her many hours of joy and happiness. Barbara retired from a longtime career as an office manager in Sydney. Celebrating her life, are her devoted husband John; daughter, Cheryl O’Connell (Killam), Hampton, N.B.; son, Mark (Sandra) Killam, Mira Road; sister, Evelyn Langille, Dartmouth; brother, Douglas Bowes, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Ryan and Samantha O’Connell, Hampton, N.B., Steven Killam, Mira Road; and great-grandson, Liam O’Connell – Moreau, Hampton, N.B. Born in Sydney, Rose was the daughter of the late Donald 'Red' and Agnes (Beach) Kauffman. She was a member of the French Club of Sydney and for years was an avid dart shooter. Besides her fiancée, Barry Penticost, she is survived by her daughter, Ella-May Hussey (Lloyd), Sydney; son, Darren Fougere (Bonnie), Dartmouth; three grandchildren, Ashley, Jesse and Sophie; one great-granddaughter, Lily. She is also survived by her brothers, John (Florence), Doug (Joy), Ken and Billy (Jane); her sisters, Jean, Shirley and Angeline (Donnie); her dear friend and father of her children, Joe Fougere, as well as several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Patricia (Murphy) MacDonald Born In: Sydney Born: November 19th, 1946 Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: January 27th, 2014 Patricia Ann MacDonald, formerly of Marion Bridge, Cape Breton, passed away at her home in Halifax, surrounded by family, on Jan. 27, 2014, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Patricia was born on Nov. 19, 1946 in Sydney, N.S. and grew up in Whitney Pier. She attended school in Sydney, graduated from Sydney Academy High School, and started her career at the Bank of Montreal in 1965. After a temporary leave, to raise her young family, Patricia rejoined the bank and served for a total of 25 years, retiring in 2006, as assistant branch manager. Patricia was most happy enjoying time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and embarking on travel adventures with her loving husband. Patricia is survived by her husband, Conrad MacDonald; three sons, Bradly MacQuarrie (Annette), Scott MacQuarrie (Raynelle), and Matthew MacQuarrie (Lynne); two stepchildren, Brian MacDonald (Jen) and Lisa MacDonald; grandchildren, Angus MacQuarrie, Owen MacQuarrie, Alexandra MacQuarrie, Xavier MacQuarrie, Autumn MacDonald, Brianna MacDonald and Ella MacDonald; aunts, Alice MacDonald of Grand Mira, N.S. and Annie White of Saint John, N.B.; father, George Dickson and brothers, Bruce Dickson and Anthony Dickson, all of Brantford, Ont. (entrance on Church Street), from 6-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Gordon Antle Born In: Whitney Pier Born: March 1st, 1930 Passed in: Courtney Passed on: January 23rd, 2014 The family of Gordon Antle regret to announce his passing on Jan. 23, 2014, after a brief illness. Born March 1, 1930 and raised in "the Pier", he was the son of the late Ray and Kate (Weeks) Antle. He worked at the steel plant before joining the RCAF, where he served on several bases, including Edmonton, Alta.; Metz, France; Shearwater, N.S.; Greenwood, N.S. and Comox, B.C., where he retired. In his youth he played hockey but his greatest love was music and playing his guitar and singing. Many summers he returned to Cape Breton and entertained family and friends for hours. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Doreen; stepchildren, Lean and Ashly; six step-grandchildren; brothers, Raymond 'JR' and Edward, Sydney; sister, 'Stash', Toronto; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Mary (Bennett) and Loretta (Jamieson) and brother, James. At his request there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. "RIP Bro. Jennifer 'Jenny' Quirk Born In: Sydney Born: July 25th, 1981 Passed in: Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: January 27th, 2014 It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our little flower, Jennifer ‘Jenny’ Marie Quirk, 32 on Jan. 27, 2014, in Truro, N.S. Born in Sydney, on July 25, 1981 she was the only child of Anne Marie Quirk. Jenny grew up in Dartmouth, N.S. and graduated from Auburn High School, she then went on to be a continuing care assistant at the Northwood Long-Term Care Facility in Halifax. Nursing was Jenny’s calling, a job she both loved and excelled at. Jenny made friends easily and was a giving and compassionate person who always put the needs of others and the needs of animals before her own. Jenny also had a great passion for gardening which her grandmother, Jean instilled in her at a very young age. She is survived by her loving mother, Anne Marie Quirk, Sydney; maternal grandmother, Jean Marie Quirk, Sydney; uncle, Jim (Kathleen) Quirk, Sydney; cousins, Christopher and Laura Quirk, Alberta and Gary, Ron, Linda and David MacEachern, Ont.; great-uncle, Francis (Judy) MacEachern, Ont.; extended family, Marie (Lionel) Totton, Ont. She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Jim Quirk, Sr. (1982) and her maternal great-grandmother, Rosie MacEachern (2006). The Quirk family will be holding a private funeral service, Rev.
