Born June 27, 1924 in Glace Bay, N.S.; he was the youngest son of Henry and Carrie (Peters) Howie of Port Caledonia. He is survived by his daughters, Judith Orde (Carl) Nanton, Alta., Audrey Matheson (Angus) Fairview and his son, Murray Howie (Debbie) of Clayton Park, Halifax, N.S. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Lisa Orde Bake(Robert), Strathmore, Alta., Kevin Orde, Calgary, Alta., Michael Howie (Margo), Jack and Rachel of Dartmouth, Jeffery Howie (Kerry), Sarah and Ryan of Hammonds Plains, Alan Matheson, Halifax, N.S., Amber Matheson Crant (Jimmy), Phoebe and Sabrina of Kanata, Ont. He is also survived by his nephew, Morenz Howie and family, Glace Bay, and other nieces and nephews and relatives across Canada and the U.S. Cousins, Audrey (Ralph) Didriksen, Maine, USA, John Howie, Port Caledonia, and his brother-in-law, John Colson, Mississauga, Ont. As well as his parents, Aulay was predeceased by his second wife Hazel Kerr Howie, and brothers, Tom, Ted, Alec, Bill and Sgt. Murray Howie and Jack Murant, his only sister Lillian (Melvin) Matheson. Aulay joined the RCAF during the Second World where he remained until his retirement in the early 1970s, then moved to Mississauga, Ont., where he worked in dispatch and fleet management at two oil companies retiring at age 65. After spending time in the hospital after a fall in Deccember 2010, he moved to Alberta to live with Judy and Carl in Jan. 2011. He moved into Madison Manor in June of that year where he resided until his passing. Special thanks to the wonderful doctors and nurses at the Nanton Clinic, the South Calgary Hospital and the staff at Madison Manor in Nanton; where he spent his last years in their loving compassionate care. Aulay will be laid to rest in the spring in his beloved Cape Breton. Notice of the date of interment will be published later. Margaret Ester (AuCoin) Muise Born In: Cheticamp Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: January 13th, 2014 It is with sadness we announce the passing of Margaret Ester (AuCoin) Muise, 94, on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in Cheticamp, she was a daughter of the late Amedee and Anne (Doucet) AuCoin. Margaret was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard. She was employed as a cook at New Waterford Hospital for 20 years and then went on to work for Muise's Dairy for another 15 years. Margaret enjoyed knitting, playing cards (especially tarabish), and crocheting blankets which she did faithfully for all grand and great-grandchildren. Surviving are daughters, Evelyn (Jim) Flemming, Annie Mae (Ray) MacKenzie, both of New Waterford; son, Pat Muise, Ottawa; brother, Joe AuCoin (Sadie May), Cheticamp; sister, Mary Ann Maillet, Cheticamp; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren. Margaret was predeceased by sons, Bernie and David, daughter-in-law, Mary, first husband Joseph, second husband William, sisters, Louise Desveaux, Adele AuCoin, Yvonne Bourgeois, brothers Johnny and Leo AuCoin. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Anthony George 'Tony' Matlock Born In: New Waterford Born: November 29th, 1952 Passed in: Mira Gut Scotchtown Passed on: January 13th, 2014 It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband and father, Tony Matlock, on Jan. 13, 2014. Born in New Waterford, Nov. 29, 1952, he was a son of the late Tony and Mary (Morrison) Matlock. Tony enrolled in the Canadian Forces in November 1972. He was part of Communication Research (291 'er) and retired in 1996. During his career, postings have included: Inuvik, NT, Bermuda, Kingston, Ont., Gander, N.L., Masset, B.C. as well as six tours in Alert, NT. In May, 1997, Tony joined the Communication Reserve in Glace Bay. He retired in December 2009 as Commanding Officer of 725 Communication Squadron. Captain Tony Matlock, CD2, SSM, QGJM retired with 37 years of dedicated and loyal service. Tony was also a proud member of UN - NATO Nova Scotia Veterans. Tony was a good, kind and compassionate man. A kid at heart, he had a great sense of humour and loved to have fun. Tony loved his family and friends most of all. His other loves were cooking (he made the 'best' tea biscuits and loved to share recipes with his sons), hunting, photography, biking and camping (he loved his bonfires). Tony always had a great smile, infectious laugh and a twinkle in his eyes. Surviving are his wife and best friend, Jane; sons, Paul (Colleen), Coxheath, Peter, Edmonton, Alta.; brothers, Jon (Patty), Ontario, Francis (Cathy), Scotchtown; sisters, Eleanor (Doug), Sydney; sister-in-law, Sharon (Terry), Glace Bay; brother-in-law, Warren (Janet), Sydney; brother-in-law, Peter, Edmonton, Alta.; nieces, nephews, grandnephews, and grandniece. Edith Martin Born In: New Victoria Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 13th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edie on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at the MacGillivray Guest Home cradled in the arms of her loving family, after a very long battle with Alzheimers. Born and raised in New Victoria, Edie was the daughter of the late Lillian (Clarke) and Robert George. Edie was a kind, gentle and generous soul who loved and enjoyed her family, as well as attending her Seventh Day Adventist Church. Surviving are her sons, Dr. Wayne (Linda), CA and Ian (Kris), OH; daughters, Dorothy (Ron) Gass, N.S. and Brenda Jennex, N.S.; special granddaughter, Dottie (Gordie) McEachern, New Waterford; great-grandson, Kyle McEachern, Ont.; brother, Kenny (Margie) George, New Victoria and sister-in-law, Chris George, New Waterford. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, as well as many close nieces and nephews. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail [email protected] William 'Tommy' McNeil Born In: Alder Point Born: June 25th, 1949 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 13th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of William Thomas McNeil on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Alder Point on June 25, 1949, he was the son of Nathan and Lorraine (Laffin) McNeil. He was a member of St. Anne parish, Alder Point. Tommy worked for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality since 1985, and most recently as superintendent of solid waste. He worked as stationary engineer involved in the construction, development and operation of the Cape Breton Regional Incineration Facility with the late Tony Roy. Throughout his life, Tommy worked in various areas of the construction industry. Most recently, Tommy was looking forward to retirement and spending time with his grandchildren, and spending time in Cape Dauphin. Tommy is survived by his loving wife, Judy and sons, Brad (Carmen), Fort St. John, B.C., and Michael (Shauna), Calgary. Also left to mourn are his four grandchildren, Nathan, Parker, Sydney, and Oliver; parents, Nathan and Lorraine McNeil; brothers, Ronnie (Aunt Deb) McNeil, Georges River, Richie (Maryon) McNeil, Bras d’Or ,and Doug (Kim) McNeil, Alder Point; sisters, Jeanie (Dave) Viva, Alder Point, and Alana Briand, North Sydney; brother-in-law, Rob Simm (Bernadette), Sydney Mines, and sister-in-law, Gail Simm, London, Ont. Isabelle Smalley Born: December 24th, 1917 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear friend Isabelle Lyra Smalley, at Northside General Hospital on Jan. 12, 2014. Isabelle was the last surviving member of her family, being predeceased by her parents, Richard and Ruth (Prescott) Smalley and brothers, Clarence, Edward and Alfred. Isabelle was born Dec. 24, 1917, and lived her entire life in Sydney Mines. After completing school, she worked at various commercial establishments in North Sydney and Sydney Mines until her retirement from the British Canadian Co-op in 1978. Isabelle was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. By request, there will be no visitation. A private committal service will be carried out at a later date. John Swan Born In: Bras d'Or Born: September 16th, 1947 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: January 12th, 2014 Broken hearted, we, John's family, announce his peaceful passing on Jan. 12, 2014, at the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Bras d'Or, on Sept. 16, 1947. John was the son of the late Oscar and Agnes (MacDonald) Swan. John had raced cars in his youth, and maintained an avid interest. A strong NDP supporter, and active in the movement with the ILA Marine Atlantic. John held the office of secretary. He continued his efforts in the office of secretary for Marine Atlantic Pensioners Society. His favourite activity was dancing and karaoke with Alice. He has "sailed the lakes" for a number of years before his permanent employment with Marine Atlantic. Until his retirement in 2007. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a baby brother, Cletus, and a much loved stepson, Jason Swan (MacNeil). John is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Alice (McNeil) and her children, Jordan, Jonathan, and Bryant Hynes. Siblings, all of Bras d'Or, Frances (Joseph) Howley, Sylvia (Earl) Cantwell, Freda Swann, also, niece Valerie Hussey, N.B. and brother, Barry Swan.
