Born January 13th, 1922, in St. Joseph du Moine, a daughter of Thomas and Rose (Chiasson) Desveaux, she was predeceased by nine of her 10 siblings and is survived by her sister, Jeanette (Arthur Doucet). At birth, Sophie was named after her sister, who had died at the age of 21 from typhoid fever. She moved to Toronto as a young adult, and worked for Canada Permanent, eventually to become part of TD Canada Trust, to which she remained fiercely loyal for over 30 years. On retirement, she moved to Ottawa, and later, Halifax, to be near her beloved widowed sister, Jeanette. She was adored by her many nephews and nieces, who often accepted her invitations to stay in her Toronto apartment when they visited the big city. Although she never married or had children, she adored children as if they were her own. Eventually Sophie’s cognitive functions started to deteriorate, and she spent the last five years of her life in the care of the excellent and professional staff at the Shannex facility in the Clayton Park area of Halifax, to whom the family owes a deep debt of gratitude. Her winning smile will continue to glow in eternity. The body was cremated. Funeral mass was held on Saturday, February 8th, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine. MacMASTER It is with sad hearts that we announce the death of Florence Jeanette (Jean) MacMaster of Port Hood. Born Sept 11th, 1915 in Port Hastings, she was the daughter of Archie J. and Agnes Elizabeth MacIsaac. She married Lauchie MacMaster of Hays River and lived there until they moved to Long Island, New York in 1960. After her husband’s death Jean returned to her Cape Breton roots and settled in her new mini home in Port Hood. Her cheerful disposition and generous nature soon endeared her to all who made her acquaintance. Countless persons benefitted from her material and spiritual generosity. Jean retained her joyful outlook and sharp mind right up to the end. She loved to drive her car, and not too many people were able to pass her on Route 19. A lover of dogs, Jean’s faithful companions Ginger and Lucky held a special place in her heart. Jean’s strong and orthodox faith was an inspiration to all. A faithful member of St. Peter’s Parish, she made a point of being in church early so that she had time to say her Rosary before mass. When it was no longer possible for her to get to church she followed daily mass and devotions on EWTN television. Jean is survived by her son Joe and his wife Joan, granddaughter Susan, grandson Steven and wife Wendy, and great-grandsons Zachary and Eric. She was predeceased by her brothers Fraser and William; sisters Margaret and Helen. Visitation was be at the Port Hood and Area Resting Place on Thursday, February 6th, 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 7th with Father Vincent vanZutphen, celebrant; burial at a later date in West Lake Ainslie. Dixie spent the latter part of the fifties and sixties in northern Ontario working in the mines. In 1972, an opportunity opened for him to move his family home to Cape Breton, where he was then employed as maintenance supervisor at Nova Scotia Forest Industries (Port Hawkesbury Paper). He retired in 1994. He was an avid golfer, card shark, Washington Capitals fan, lover of Scottish fiddle music, and he was known to play a few tunes himself. In 2009, he suffered a massive stroke which left him incapacitated, but he never once complained or gave up on living his life to the fullest. Visitation was held in Port Hood and Area Resting Place on Tuesday, February 11th. Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, February 12th in St. Peter’s Church, Port Hood, with Fr.
