Dad died Feb. 25, 2014 after a brief illness at the Glace Bay Hospital. A gentle kind man, Jack of all trades and the best father and grandfather anyone could ask for. He taught us love, patience and understanding. Dad was born in 1927 to Patrick and Mary (Robinson) Neary. He attended St. John School and later worked at the British Canadian Co-op in New Aberdeen, Donkin and Glace Bay until it closed. Dad is survived by his wife, Theresa (Nichols); daughters, Monica (Blair Munden), Carmen (Gus Daix), Danette (Shannon Boutilier); sons, Sandy and Peter and by stepdaughter, Joanne (Dave Harapiak) and Liam; grandchildren, Blair P., Nicole, Erin and Ryan Munden, Jason and Karlene Daix, Marc Neary, Colton Boutilier; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Allie and sister, Veronica Stonier; brothers and sisters-in-law and friend Stella Neary. Also many nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Elva Hines and six brothers and six sisters. There is no visitation. Funeral mass will be held, Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at 11 a.m., Holy Cross Church with Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Curry's Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Marie Johnson Passed in: Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation Passed on: February 22nd, 2014 Marie passed away on Feb 22, 2014 in Afton. Born in Antigonish she was a daughter of the late Freeman and Theresa (Battiste) Julian. Marie, was a strong Mik’maw woman who was known for reaching out and helping others. Her love for her community had her volunteering for various community activities and events. She was elected as the community representative for the Native Women’s Association. She also served two terms as a councilor for Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation. As graduate from the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College she worked as a teacher’s assistant for preschoolers in the community as well as in Tracadie Consolidated school. She was a recent graduate from St. Thomas University with a degree in Social Work. Her degree gave her the opportunity to work for the Women’s Resource Center. It was also an opportunity for her to start a women’s support group for Paqtnkek. She was also a member of the Paqtnkek Domestic Violence Action Group and was a strong advocate for families. Best known for her famous "Luski" and her vibrant smile, she will greatly missed by all those that knew her. Survived by her common law husband Fred Sylliboy; sons: Patrick (Tanya), Paqtnkek; Shawn, Paqtnkek; Trevor (Jennifer), Paqtnkek; daughter Atta 'Jennifer' Paqtnkek; 12 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and four godchildren; brothers: Albert (Judy) Julian, Donnie Julian, Gerard Julian, all of Paqtnkek; sister Beverly Johnson, Millbrook. She was predeceased by her husband Abraham Johnson; daughter Valerie Julian; brothers Russell Battiste, Stanley Julian, Freeman Julian; and sisters Marion Paul and Shirley Julian. Visitation is in the family home at 200 Sagamaw Rd, Afton. Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Heatherton, with Rev Charles Cameron presiding. Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty, Mae’ Moore 88, Sydney It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing, after a lengthy illness, of our cherished mother, grandmother, and greatg randmoth e r, Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty, Mae’ Moore, of Taylor Street, Sydney, on Feb. 24, 2014. Born at Jamesville West, Victoria County, Betty was the daughter of the late Rod and Katie (MacNeil) Gillis. After Betty spent her early years in Jamesville, she moved to Sydney, where she met and married her loving husband, James Moore. Betty’s focus in life was raising and nurturing her children, followed by her grandchildren. She was never known to be idle, when her family was growing, she spent a number of years working at the K-Mart in the layaway department. Betty was well known for great cooking, her quick wit, and all things Scottish.Betty is survived by her children, Roger Cormier (Chalin), Lynn Sewell (Eric), Kay Gillis, Anne Chiasson (Dave), Shirley Fraser ( Joe), Mary Aucoin (Paul), Alan Moore (Patsy), Arlene McCarron (Bob), Aggie MacDonald (Ian), Donnie Moore and Bobby Moore (April); 28 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; brother, John Anthony Gillis; sisters, Annie Bois and Faye LeFort; as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Betty was predeceased by her sons, Jimmy and Wayne, sisters, Jenny, Margaret, Aggie, Theresa and Lucy, brothers, Neil John, Jimmy, Hector, and several more siblings in infancy. She was also predeceased by her son-inlaw, Charlie Gillis. Visitation for the late Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty, Mae’ Moore will be held today (Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014) at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the mass a reception will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Family flowers only, for donations in memory of Betty may be made to Feed the Children, Heart and Stroke or charity of one’s choice.
