Born in Glace Bay, she was the only daughter of the late James (Jimmy) and Muriel Smith. She was the beloved wife of the late Glenn Francis Allen, who passed away in October 2013. Carol graduated from Morrison High School, then continued her education at the Cape Breton Business College and UCCB. She received her BACS degree in 1983, an accomplishment she worked extremely hard for and was very proud of. She worked for several companies during her career, including MT & T, Carroll’s Drugstore, The Silver Dart Lodge, London Jewellers, Tourism Cape Breton and Lindor. She worked at the Holiday Inn Sydney on Kings Road from June 1982 until May 1997, when family illness necessitated her early retirement. It was her position as Rooms Division / Group Sales Manager at the hotel that she was most proud of. She was most recently employed at The Bay at the Mayflower Mall. Carol’s father put a pair of skates on her at 2 years of age; she glided effortlessly over the ice at Cape Breton’s arenas for the next 60 years. She was known as one of Cape Breton’s most graceful skaters. Her love for skating and shopping was rivaled only by her wanderlust. She loved to travel, with a desire to see as much of the world as she could (but only the sunny parts) with Glenn or Pat by her side. Carol was a devoted mother to her children and a cherished grandmother to her grandchildren, who loved their “Nanny Carol” to the moon and back. We will remember her as the woman she was; she made the sun shine brighter, she said what she meant and she meant what she said. She was vibrant, loyal, kind and loving. She is survived by her daughters Andrea (Darren) Bartlett and their children Tristan, Morgan and Shelby, Tammy Merrill and her son Spencer, her sons Scott (Sarah) MacMullin and their children Zoey and Emma, Roger (Anthony Verdoni) Allen, Shawn (Debbie) Allen and their children Kyle, Troy and Shayna. Carol is also survived by her uncle Archdeacon Weldon Smith and her aunt Sara Warren. Her cherished friend and travel companion Pat Almon and her fur babies Blitz and Dolly. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother Darrell Smith. The family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Glenn Gracie for his care of Mom for so many years, also the staff of 4E at the CBRH, who were so kind and caring to Mom during her final days. Donations in her name to The Palliative Care Unit would be gratefully accepted. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 10 am in St. Theresa's Church, Sydney with Fr. James Oliver officiating.
