MacDonald - 78 yrs Frances Lonie (MacLeod) Hawkins - Mary Catherine (Cooke) Hughes - 79 yrs Angus Ferguson Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 2nd, 2014 Angus Ferguson of Sydney passed away at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay on February 2, 2014 at the age of 92. Angus was born and raised in Sydney NS, the son of Daniel J. and Margaret (Holmes) Ferguson. He was educated in Sydney and at Dalhousie University. He served in the Signals Corp during WWII, primarily in Italy but also in Holland and France. He went on to work with Revenue Canada for over 30 years. Angus served with several volunteer organizations including the Gideons’ Association of Canada. He was an avid gardener and for many years, took delight in his Columbia St. gardens. Angus is survived by his wife Alberta (Walker) and three daughters, Jeanne Ferguson Whyte (Eric), Cathy Lynn MacLeod (Ian), Brenda Ferguson Davis; and sister Georgie MacGibbon. He was predeceased by his sister Catherine; brother Frank; sister-in-law Mary and brother-in-law Nelson MacGibbon. Angus enjoyed warm relationships with his 13 grandchildren: Laura (Andrew), Eric (Mary), Grace, Gemma, Alex, Joe, Ben and Beth Whyte, Jonathan, Anne and Emily MacLeod, Sarah and Christy Davis. He lived to see the birth of four great grandchildren including his namesake "Angus." His nieces and nephews will miss "Uncle Angus’ jokes." Angus was a quiet man who loved his family and blessed them with the heritage of a loving, gentle and honorable husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Visitation will be held at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney on Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be officiated by Rev. Rick Barnes in the funeral home chapel Friday, February 7 at 2 p.m. The family would like to express their thanks to Drs. R. Cohen, J. Rogers and J. MacLean for their fine care of Angus. Thank you to Rev. Rick Barnes who kindly visited Dad. The considerate staff at the local Veterans Affairs Office made it possible for Dad to live at home until recently. Thank you for your wonderful support. Home Care NS caregivers were unfailingly cheerful and sympathetic. We are so appreciative. As well, we offer heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Taigh Na Mara who made Dad’s last months so much easier. Your competence, professionalism and compassion were unparalleled. Job 19: 25, 26 Ronnie Marman Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 2nd, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of E. Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Marman, age 41, on Sunday, February 2, 2014 in Halifax following an accident on Hunter’s Mountain while doing what he loved, snowmobiling. Born in Sydney, Ronnie was the son of Ronald and Rita (D’Angelo) Marman, Sydney. Ronnie obtained his Degree of Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS) in 1996. He was employed at the Canadian Coast Guard College as a teaching instructor. This world has lost a GIANT personality with his witty sense of humour and infectious chuckle. Ronnie had a tremendous zest for life and lived every moment to the fullest. He spent many hours building and flying model planes at the flying field with his friends, Glen Miller, Mike Barrie, George Carabin, and many other members of the Cape Breton RC Modellers. Ronnie enjoyed riding his motorcycle and snowmobile rides with his cousin Alan MacLeod and co-worker Dave Blythe, as well as his weekly competitive squash matches with his fellow co-workers David Gerbasie and Andrew Cebula. Ronnie is survived by his wife, Carrie (Hayes) who was the LOVE of his life; sister Raylene (Geoff) Allaby, New Brunswick; in-laws Tommy and Beverly Hayes; brother-in-law Jerry (Belinda) Hayes; sisters-in-law Sherry (Steve) Nugent and Devin Hayes (Darren), Alberta; his nieces Logan, Riley and Morgan and nephews AJ, Hayden and Mason. He is also survived by his aunts Mary Marman, Sydney and Louise (James) Sexton, Ontario; his uncle Frankie D’Angelo, Sydney; many cousins and his special medical family in Sydney and Halifax, particularly Dr. Murdock Smith. Visitation for the late Mr. Marman will take place Friday, February 7, 2014 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 8, at St. Theresa’s Church at 11 a.m. with Father Jim Oliver officiating. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.twcurry.com. “When all is said and done, the rising tides, the setting sun, just remember….I love you.” Lydia Smith Born In: Sydney Born: May 20th, 1941 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 1st, 2014 Lydia Mae (Black) Smith, age 72 of Sydney passed away peacefully at Seaview Manor Glace Bay, Saturday, February 1, 2014 due to complications from Multiple Systems Atrophy (Shy-Drager Syndrome). Born in Sydney on May 20, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Evelyn (Hudson) Black. She was active in sports in her youth and remained a sports fan for her entire life, being a season ticket holder for the Cape Breton Oilers and the Screaming Eagles for many years. She was a quilter, crocheter, wood carver and enjoyed times with fellow members of their Wednesday night Rummoli club. She was a past member, including a term as president, of the Sydney Kinette Club, and canvassed for various charities. She was an avid bowler for many years with the Commercial League, General Office Ladies League and the Coffee Breakers. A loving and caring woman, after raising her own family, she spent time being an in-home care giver for younger children in three other families, forming an extra special bond with Ellen Penny and her mother Anna Mae Muise. She was a long time member of St. Joseph's Church, in Sydney. She is survived by her husband of 52 years Fabian; four sons Clayton (Karen), Brooklyn Queens Co., Gregory (Yanny), Vancouver, Stephen (LeeAnn), Antigonish, and David (Jane), Sydney River, two grandchildren Jennifer and Darren. She is also survived by three brothers: Neil (Trudy), Courtenay, BC, Lloyd (Joan), Markham, ON and John (Connie), Calgary, AB and one sister Lorraine (James Ferguson), Orleans, ON, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the VON Day Care and the staff of 4B-3B at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their care during Lydia's illness. We also would like to especially acknowledge the special staff at Seaview Manor for your kindness, caring, compassion and humor. Garvin MacDonald It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Garvin, following his long battle with Parkinsons. Garvin started his writing career in 1952, covering sports for the Cape Breton Post. He continued his career in Ontario, working in public relations at Automatic Electric Brockville, and in 1980, he became the editor for Microtel Corporate Communications in British Columbia. Survived by wife Shirley, children Susan, Shari, Shauna, Glenn and Grant, and siblings Fletcher, Charles, Ellen Beth and Nonnie. Frances Hawkins (MacLeod)Born In: Sydney Passed on: February 1st, 2014 It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Fran peacefully Feb. 1, 2014. Born in Sydney NS, the only child of Nicholson John and Lavinia (Ginn) MacLeod. Survived by her loving soul mate and husband for 67 years, Cecil; son Graham (Vicki); daughter Debra (Ken); grandson Nicholson (Amy) and extended family. Throughout Fran’s life she followed Cecil in his career and lived in Bridgewater, Kentville, and settled in Dartmouth in 1961. Fran worked and retired from Peat Marwick in 1992. Catherine Hughes Born In: Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada Born: July 8th, 1934 Passed in: Greenwood, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: February 1st, 2014 Mary Catherine (Cooke) Hughes - 79 of 108 Hollow Road, Greenwood, passed away February 1, 2014 at home. Born in Reserve Mines, Cape Breton she was a daughter of the late John and Mary (Gouthro) Cooke. Catherine was an active member of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church and C.W.L.. For many years Catherine helped her husband Harry operate the Esso garage in Greenwood as well as Hughes Video in Stellarton. She was an outside supervisor at Thorburn Consolidated School and worked in the bakery at Cross Roads Country Market. Catherine was known throughout the community for her delicious baked goods. The greatest joy in her life was time spent with her family and friends. Catherine is survived by daughters Isabel (Greg) Cooley, Greenwood; Patsy (Charlie) O’Laney, MacLellan’s Brook; Leona (Tim) Wilson, Fraser’s Mountain; brothers Bill (Freda) Cooke, Iona, Cape Breton; Blaise (Anne) Cooke, Chicopee, Mass.; brother-in-law Mark Thomas Reserve Mines, Cape Breton; sisters –in –law Peggy Stewart and Frances Hughes, Westville; loving grandchildren Stephen (Denise) Cooley and their children Josh and Mallory; Brad (Shannon) Cooley and their children Abby and Natasha; Blaise (Hollie) O’Laney; and their son Cameron; Brittany O’Laney (Evan), Erica Quinn, Rebecca Wilson and Blake Wilson. She was predeceased by her parents John and Mary Cooke, husband Harry Hughes, son Harold, sister Leona Thomas, and her brother Eric Cooke. The family will receive friends from 6-9 pm Tuesday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, 256 King St., New Glasgow. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 pm Wednesday in St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Thorburn with father Colin MacKinnon officiating. Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery at a later date. St Ann’s C.W.L. will meet at the funeral home at 5:45 pm Tuesday to recite prayers. Family flowers only. Donations in her memory may be made to the Thorburn Fire Departm
