Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Desire and Julia Phillippo. Madeline was employed by the Cape Breton Addiction Centre and the Naval Base in Point Edward and was a chartered member of the Ladies Auxiliary Branch 126, Westside Legion as well as a devoted member of the Holy Rosary Parish. She enjoyed playing Bingo, cards and dancing. Gran’s loving heart always welcomed everyone into her home. She was always ready and willing to attend any family functions and was the life of the party. She was fortunate enough to enjoy five sets of a five generation family. Madeline is survived by her daughter Judy (Frank); sister Edwardine and brothers Joseph and John. She is predeceased by her husband Maurice; sons Stephen and Maurice Jr.; brothers, Peter, Paul, Andrew, Desire, Frank, Maurice and sister Jean. Gran will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Suzanne (Bernie), Nancy (Michael), Linda, Ronnie (Donna), Kenny (Sandra), James (Lisa) and Colby. As well as her great-grandchildren, Tasha, Christa, Danielle, Alisha, Ryan, Bradley, Chloe, Amy, Michael, Kayla, Riley and Brandon. And great-great grandchildren Parker, Cole, Addison, Cruze, and Jonathan. She was very well loved by numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Florence, June 13, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Annie Mae and Edward King. Mom was always at home with her children as they were growing up and always ready with a different school lunch for each one of us. She loved her children dearly and always took pride in all her family’s accomplishments. Mom was a devout member of St. Stephen’s parish and, when she was well, was an active member of the CWL. Theresa is survived by her daughters, Linda Buffett, Sydney Mines, Sandra (Larry) Clarke, North Sydney, Susan (Bill) McNicoll, Cancun, Mexico, Denise (Billy) Mulley, Baddeck, and Paula (Tom) McDonald, Hinton, Alta.; and her brother, Joseph (Dodie) King. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Leanne Donovan, Amanda McCracken, Jason Mulley, Natasha Riggs, Larry Riggs and her great-grandchildren, Danielle, Jenna and Emily Donovan, Jeffrey and Allie McCracken and Faydra Hanna. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence in 1989 and by a son in childbirth. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Clifford, David and Edward and her sisters, Margaret and Marie. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at 1 p.m. in Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Isabell Campbell Born In: Glenco Mills Born: October 10th, 1924 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 18th, 2014 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Isabell Campbell, 89 of Sydney at the An Cala Unit of CBRH on Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Born in Glencoe Mills on October 10, 1924. Mom was the daughter of the late Dan MacLean and Bessie (Campbell) Landmeyer. She was the wife of the late Donald 'Tom' Campbell. Mom spent all of her working years as a custodian for the CBRSB where she made many friends and retired in 1989. She is survived by two sons, Alex and Warren (Goretti) both of Sydney, as well as by her cherished grandchildren, Ashley Boudreau (Pat), Breton (Jessica) and Garrett (Hannah) . She is also survived by her three sisters, Catherine Spino, Montreal, Mary Woo, California and Irene Andrews, Sydney, several nieces and nephews as well as her extended family in the Inverness area who she spoke of with great affection. Besides her husband, mom is predeceased by her daughter–in-law, Paula (Hollohan) Campbell; her brothers, Johnny Landmeyer (Lee), Donald Landmeyer; step father, Sylvie Landmeyer. Born in Louisbourg he was the son of the late Charlie and Winifred Matheson. Steward was a veteran of the Second World War and also a member of versus legions in Glace Bay. Steward was known to many as the bread man. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. Steward was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Born in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Plemeth and Emily Mae (Hines) Dove He was employed in Toronto Ontario for 42 years and moved home for retirement. As a young man he was in the Navy. He was truly an outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and golfing. Wilson had a heart of gold, he will be deeply missed. Born in Oban Seaview on Nov. 14, 1934. Jean was predeceased by her beloved father, Hugh John MacPhail and her precious mother, Catherine May MacPhail. She was also predeceased by her beloved son, who died at birth; loving sisters, Eva-Belle Gosby, Jessie Sampson (MacPhail), Betty LeBlanc (McLeod), as well as, Thelma and Shirley MacPhail, who died at birth; and her brothers, Calvin Kent, Winston and Melvin. Jean is survived by her sons, Bruce (Chaudhari), Lake Echo, NS, Norman (Coreen), Goose Bay, Nfld. and Shawn (Carolyn), Beaverbank, N.S.; daughters, Darlene, Baie Comeau, Que., Linda (Dave) Benvie, Sydney and Karen (Gerald) Mombourquette, Truro, N.S.; sisters, Joan (the late Ernest) Fougere and Sharon (Angus) MacDonald and brothers, Wayne (Nancy), Wendell (Shirley), John (Peggy) and Sherman (Cheryl). Precious to Jean were her grandchildren, Ryan Alfred and Brianna Penny, children of Norman and Coreen Penny and Shelbie Mombourquette, daughter of Karen and Gerald Mombourquette. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Anna MacPhail and will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews, including those in London, Ont. John and Rose, Ken and Judi, Glenn and Susan and Ashley and Kalynn; and many grandnieces and grandnephews, especially, Hugh Jocksey, whom she adored. Everyone in the community of St. Peters recognizes Jean’s life-long volunteer work, as well as her commitment to the Legion for 15 years and the Terry Fox Foundation for 30 years. She was honored in the Nova Scotia Legislature for her dedication to the “Marathon of Hope”. Many will also remember Jean for 21 years of devotion caring for the elderly at the Cameron Nursing Home. A very kind and compassionate person, Jean enjoyed entertaining visitors and keeping in touch with family and friends by telephone was a daily ritual. Thank you to the Richmond County Home Services for the care and loving friendship shown to Jean in her later years. Visitation will take place at the River Bourgeois Funeral Home on Friday from 2-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Peter’s United Church on Saturday 2 p.m., with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail [email protected] Sara 'Evelyn' (Miles) McDonald Born In: Birch Grove Born: May 31st, 1928 Passed on: February 18th, 2014 Sarah Evelyn (Miles) McDonald slipped quietly away on Feb 18, 2014, with her loving family and granddaughter, Janelle, by her side. Evelyn was born in Birch Grove on May 31, 1928. Evelyn was best known for her love of music. She grew up on Lake Road in Glace Bay in a house always filled with music. Her father and mother were both musicians and instilled this love in all their six children. Weekends "Out Home" were a time when family and friends gathered, played music, sang, and enjoyed an abundance of great food. Evelyn played the piano in a band called "Revellers", along with her brother Bea. She was organist and choir director at Holy Cross Church for over 30 years. She also played the piano for the ATV Show "Marjorie the Music Lady" for 12 years. She was a member and piano player for Coal Town Chorus. Her family was exceptionally proud of her when she graduated from University College of Cape Breton with a diploma in Religious Education in 1991. Evelyn was predeceased by her father, William B. Miles; mother, Marjorie Elizabeth (Hillier) Miles; husband John R "Sharkey" McDonald, brothers John (Hilda) Miles, and Gus Miles, sister Mary "Mamie" Miles and brother in law Edward MacLeod. She is survived by her loving and care giver brother William "Bea" Miles and her loving sister Joan MacLeod. Her devoted and loving daughter Marjorie (Louis) Fougere, grandchildren Jenet Campbell, Janelle (Jeff) Osborne, Michelle (Leo) Cormier, and Rene Fougere. Great grandchildren Isabella and Logan Osborne, Campbell Delaney, Danielle and Renee Cormier. Her many nieces and nephews, especially Bill and Gloria Miles who were never farther than a phone call away, and great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. Steve was born on April 14, 1987, in Sydney, N.S., but lived in Guelph, Ont. since 1999. He was the beloved brother of Alison and Reginald Reid, the loving uncle of Mallory Reid (Jay) and Tyler Reid and the great-uncle of Addelaine Reid, whom he adored, the loving nephew of Debbie (Rob) Desveaux, the son of Wallace 'Buzz' Burton and a wonderful person to many more relatives in Cape Breton. Steve was predeceased by his mother, Sharon Ann (nee Brown) Burton; by his maternal grandparents, Ignatius and Kathleen Brown and by his paternal grandparents, Wallace Burton and Eileen Burchell. Steve was the treasured friend of so many special people who shared their love, friendship and life with him. He was a big guy with a big heart and a bigger personality. He was a philanthropist to the core and shared all he had and all he was with everyone he encountered. Although he faced many challenges in his life, he overcame all and came out a better person for all that he had to live through. She was formerly of Sydney and Margaree Cape Breton, and later of Dartmouth. Born Dec. 3, 1922 in Westmount, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her parents, Angus and Mary Jane (Rudderham) Morrison and her brothers, Duncan (Ivy) and Francis (Mary Lou) and her husband, Benito. She is survived by her children, Vivian (Peter Miller); Peter (Marian Borden) and Benita (Alfred Ajello) and her beloved grandchildren, Angus and Keagan Miller; Charlie, Anna and Rachael Mancini; and Alexander and Elizabeth Ajello. She was a woman of strong convictions, who enjoyed life to the fullest and was a born story teller. She had a remarkable memory and her knowledge of Cape Breton history was, as some said, a better information source than google. Those who knew her will treasure their memories of her wit and her words of wisdom which she dispensed until the very end of her days. Cremation has taken place.
