Smith Born In: North Sydney Born: May 28th, 1940 Passed in: George's River Passed on: April 29th, 2014 With great sadness and broken hearts we the family announce the passing of Norman Roger Smith of Johnson Road, George's River on Tuesday, April 29, 2014. Norm was born on May 28, 1940, to the late Robert and Helen Smith of North Sydney. Norm was the owner operator of Norm Smith Fuels for much of his career. He later went on to become executive director of the Northside Industrial Park Commission until his retirement. Norm was very active in the community and sat on many boards which include: Northside Community Forum, elected member of the Northside Victoria School Board, chairman of the Board of Directors for the Northside General Hospital and a member of the board for the Northside Community Guest Home. He was a founding member of the Northside Quarter Horse Association. His community spirit also included his sponsorship of local Little League baseball and minor hockey teams. Norm was past president of the North Sydney Kinsmen Club, deputy governor of Zone 3 Kinsmen and Governor of District 7 Kinsmen Clubs and a life member of the Kinsmen Association. Norm's many passions included outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, coaching Little League baseball and simply enjoying all nature had to offer. Through the years his passions expanded and he became an accomplished wood worker. He spent many hours studying and accomplishing the art of wood turning. His turning was recognized by the Cape Breton Center for Craft and Design and he was a Juried Status Member of the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council. His work has been enjoyed by people from around the world. When wood turning was not possible due to his disease, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Norm cultivated a love for the art of Bonsai. He leaves behind to mourn his wife of 49 years Emily (Devison) Smith, daughter Elizabeth (Kirk) Hardy, son Roger (Beth Toomey) Smith and his pride and joy his two grandsons, Javier (JJ) and Joshua Ordonez; his sister Margret (Peggy) Wilkie, North Sydney; his brothers, David, Delaware, USA, Bruce (Carol) Edmonton, Alta., and James (Mary) Kempt Head, N.S.; brothers-in-law, John (Evelyn) Devison, Henry (Patricia) Devison, Richard Devison; sisters-in-law, Mary (Don) Hood and Barbra (Ron) Bullen and also his mother-in-law Elizabeth Devison; many nieces, nephews and many friends. Norm was predeceased by his parents Robert and Helen, brother Kenneth, sister Roberta Sicotte, brothers-in-law Marcel Sicotte and Lloyd Wilkie, sister-in-law Donna Smith and father-in-law Clarence Devison. Visitation for Norm will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Friday, May 2, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A private family interment of ashes will take place at Lakeside Cemetery Saturday, May 3. Norm’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to doctors and staff of the Northside General Hospital and Cape Breton Regional Hospital who managed his care with compassion and expertise. Vivian Marie MacKillop Born In: Truro, Canada Born: July 14th, 1917 Passed in: Sydney, Canada Passed on: April 29th, 201 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Vivian Marie MacKillop (Feetham), who passed away on April 29, 2014, at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Cheticamp, N.S. Vivian was born in Truro on July 14, 1917. She graduated from Sydney Academy in 1935, and completed Business College in Sydney. During her life she enjoyed writing music and poetry, playing piano, photography and reading mystery novels. She worked for CJCB Television in Sydney and worked in real estate until her retirement. She spent a great deal of time in Loch Lomond and in Ingonish with her family. Vivian is survived by her daughter Anne Phillips, Sydney; sons, Bruce MacKillop, Sydney and Alan MacKillop (Carol), Dieppe; grandchildren, Charlie ( Laura), Donna, Kimberly (Martin) Dianne (Gary) and Debbie (Sheldon); great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Hilary, Matthew, Lily, Théo, Emma, David, Ella, Olivia, Caitlyn and Brendan. She was predeceased by her father Charles Saunders Feetham, mother Elizabeth 'Bessie' McNutt and her daughter Carole Elizabeth Gabriel. She was also predeceased by her former husband George MacKillop of Sydney. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Palliative Care department, Cheticamp or to the charity of ones choice. The family would like to make a special thank you to her palliative care nurse Jackie Doucette and all the staff at Foyer Pere Fiset and the Sacred Heart Hospital in Cheticamp who provided exceptional care and compassion during her final journey. Patrick Joseph 'Pat' McPherson Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: April 29th, 2014 Pat McPherson, 75, of Turner Street, Glace Bay, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Alex and Anastasia (Tracey) McPherson. Pat graduated from St. FX University with a BA and B.Ed and taught at St. Anne’s School, Glace Bay for 25 years. He was very active in his church and community. Pat loved to bake and cook and was also an avid reader. Pat is survived by his wife, Colleen (McIsaac) McPherson; two sons, Paul (Paula), Halifax, Craig (Cavell), Calgary; one sister, Joan Dorsey, Hamilton; three brothers, Alfred, Vernon (Lois), both in Ontario, John (Leona), Winnipeg; three grandchildren, Alex, Colin, Rory and nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Frances Gillard. Visitation will be held today (Thursday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Dan Boudreau is Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Martha MacInnis Born In: Inverness, Canada Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: April 29th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend Martha MacInnis. Martha passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Glace Bay Hospital with her family at her side. Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late Alphonse and Mary (Jollings-Catoul) Monnon and was a longtime member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Martha spent her earlier years growing up in Inverness, these times were very memorable to her and she enjoyed reminiscing and telling stories of that time. Martha moved to Glace Bay in the forties working as a nurse’s aide and a homecare worker. She enjoyed baking, providing countless baked goods for KOC and CWL functions, she also enjoyed the formal banquets she and her late husband Angus frequently attended. She was an avid bowler and truly enjoyed a good game of cards. Martha was also very content staying at home raising her family and being a homemaker. She loved her family and was happy to have them around her. She will be sadly missed by her loving son, John 'Rick' (Sharon), Glace Bay; sister Francine MacNeil, Ont.; daughter-in-law Faith MacInnis, Glace Bay. Also surviving are cherished grandchildren, Michael, Glace Bay, Danny, Shane, both of Alberta, Scott (Kelly), Lunenburg and four great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces , grandnephews, as well as great grand nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Martha was predeceased by her husband, Angus A. 'Gus'; sons, Wayne, Carter; brother Joseph Catoul and granddaughter-in-law Goldie. Visitation for Martha will be held 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014 in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 3 at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery. Jean Barrasso (MacNeil) Born In: Irish Vale Passed in: Danvers Passed on: April 25th, 2014 We, the MacNeil family, regret to announce the passing of our beloved sister Jean Carmel, on April 25, 2014 in Danvers, Mass. Jean's journey has come to an end, with her loving family at her side. Born in Irish Vale, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Josephine (Dunphy) MacNeil. After finishing her education, she moved to Danvers where she was employed as an OR/CSR technician at Hunt Memorial and Beverly Hospitals. Besides her job Jean loved to garden, do many crafts and spend time with her pets. She especially loved her trips home to see her family in Cape Breton. Jean will always be remembered for her big smile and ability to make you laugh. She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years Pasquale Barrasso; her two sons David and Rico all of Danvers. She was the sister of Anne McNamara Evanston, John (Donna) New Waterford, Wanda (Conrad) River Bourgeois, Alva MacNeil, Irish Vale, Gerard (Wanda), Kevin (Patsy), Gerry MacNeil, all of Sydney; sister-in-law Donna (Johnson) MacNeil, Sheila (Steele) MacNeil, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her loving parents are brothers James, Donald; brother-in-law Val McNamara; and sister-in-law Shirley welcoming her with open arms. Cremation has taken place in Danvers, Mass. Abel Boutilier Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: April 17th, 2014 Abel William Boutilier was born a beautiful sleeping angel into his parents' arms on April 17, 2014 at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, N.S. Although Abel had only a short time to spend with his family, they feel truly blessed to have been a part of his journey. He touched many people's lives and his memory will remain etched in their hearts forever. Abel is loved and survived by his mother and father, Natasha Fiolek-Boutilier and Fabian Boutilier, Dartmouth; his adoring grandparents, Barrie and Janine Fiolek, Dominion, Fabian Boutilier, Gardiner Mines, and Joanne McIntyre (Alfred), Port Morien; his loving aunt, Allison Boutilier, Dominion; his wonderful great-grandparents, William McIntyre, Glace Bay, Evelyn Boutilier, Gardiner Mines and Yvonne Fiolek, Sydney; his great-aunts and uncles and his many cousins. Abel was predeceased by his aunt, Marcia Fiolek and great-grandparents, Genevieve McIntyre, Fabian Boutilier, William Fiolek, and Donald and Patricia MacPherson. Abel's parents, Fabian and Natasha, would like to express their gratitude to the amazing family and friends that surround them. The love and support they received during this very difficult time offered some light in the midst of darkness. Abel's family would also like to thank the special doctors and nurses at the IWK for their tremendous care throughout Abel's journey. A private ceremony of remembrance will take place in Dartmouth, officiated by Father Irek Bem. Burial will take place in Cape Breton.
