Born in Sydney Mines, N.S., in 1934, Lois was the daughter of the Late George and Catherine (Marsh) Swan. Lois loved her family, politics, sports and cards. She was a longtime supporter of the Liberal party, and enjoyed a good debate on the subject at any time. She was an avid Maple Leafs fan, and cheered for her Leafs in good times and bad. Cards also played a big part of her life. The Bras d’Or Pensioners’ Club was a second home to her, and one often heard of the fun times had with her many friends on card night. Lois and Tony’s was a military family, who lived on bases across Canada, eventually retiring back to Little Bras d’Or and the place she adored. Tony Sr.’s passing in 1991 left a significant gap in Lois’s life and she missed her husband every day. We know he is waiting for her with a deck of cards and a crib board in hand. She is survived by her sons, Tony (Mary Margaret) and Sheldon (Heather); sister, Bridgette (Reginald) Thurbide,;12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, along with numerous other relatives. Besides her parents and husband, Lois was predeceased by her son Charles and daughter Greta. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at 3 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Parish, Little Bras d’Or, with a reception to follow, at the St. Joseph Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lois’s name to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or a charity of your choice. The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to her niece, Kim Day who provided much loving care in her final years. Special thanks to niece Cassie Brochu, and all the nurses of Northside General for their tenderness and kindness these past couple of weeks. Winnie G. (Shepherd) Buffett Born In: Rose Blanche Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: March 10th, 2014 It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Winnie Gladys Buffett, 90, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt on Monday, March 10, 2014, at the Northside Community Guest Home. Born in Rose Blanche, Newfoundland, Winnie was the daughter of the late Aaron and Elizabeth (Best) Shepherd. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney and also a member of the North Sydney Senior Citizens & Pensioners Club. She is survived by her only son, Jim (Karen) Buffett and her cherished grandson, Peter Buffett, Sydney Mines. Also surviving are her brother, Charlie Shepherd and three sisters, Ellen Bugden, Hazel Johnston and Harriett (Russell) Scott, all of North Sydney, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Buffett, her sister, Marion (Robert) Cadden, sisters-in-law, Henrietta Shepherd, Anne (Dorman) Poole, brothers-in-law, Traver Bugden, Fred Johnston and James (Amelia) Buffett. Visitation for Winnie will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Trinity Anglican Church in Sydney Mines with Rev. Stacey Lemoine officiating. Rachel Ann 'Nancy' Young Born In: George's River Born: June 30th, 1928 Passed on: March 8th, 2014 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Rachel Ann (Nancy) Young on March 8, 2014, at home. Born in George's River, she was the daughter of the late George and Rose Cartwright. Nancy was a devoted mother of 10 children, she will be remembered as a kind and generous lady who was involved in her community. She spent many hours quietly creating treasured quilts for her family. She was also a beautiful baker, her molasses cookies and date squares were enjoyed by many. She will be sadly missed by her children, Benjamin (Heather), Millville, Elizabeth Flemming, Millville, Ann (Ron) Bonnar, Bras d'Or, John D (Janet), Sydney Mines, Nelida (Jonathan Kenney), Bedford, Michael (Connie), Long Island, Theresa (Glen) MacLeod, Dartmouth, Colonel (Rosie), Toronto, Alice (Michael) Van den Bosch Peterborough, and Brian (Mitzi) Peterborough; as well as special daughter-in-law, Jody Moore. She also leaves a legacy of 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband, John D, three brothers, two sisters several brothers and sisters-in-law as well as son-in-law, Vincent Flemming. She will also be greatly missed by her siblings in-laws, neighbours and many friends. There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at St. Joseph Church Bras d'Or, at 10:30 a.m. with a reception to follow at the George's River Fire Hall. Cecilia (Aucoin) Hedd Born In: Inverness, Canada Passed in: Reserve Mines, Canada Passed on: March 9th, 2014 It is with great sadness, that we the family of Cecilia Hedd, announce her sudden but peaceful passing on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Lucy (LeBlanc) Aucoin. Cecilia was a resident of Victoria Haven Nursing Home for the past three years and had lived most of her life in Reserve Mines. She was a lady of great Christian faith and worshiped in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines. Cecilia’s greatest joy came from her family. She was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. All who entered her home were made to feel welcomed and treated with kindness and respect. Cecilia is survived by her three sons, Owen (Lina), Reserve Mines, Billy (Shirley), Lower Washabuk, Russell, Glace Bay; two daughters, Elaine (Ben) Haighway, Reserve Mines, Donna Hedd-Cann, Glace Bay; seven grandchildren, Belinda (Stuart), Brian (Carrie), Raymond (Jennifer), Leah (Kyle), Amber, Meaghan (Derrick), Devon and seven great-grandchildren, Paige, Marissa, Marley, Breagh, Kyleigh, Cooper and Mitchell; two sisters, Nellie Moore and Angeline Moirs, both of Dartmouth. Harvey Francis Steele Born In: Sydney Mines Born: October 9th, 1956 Passed in: Alder Point Passed on: March 10th, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Harvey Steele, on Monday, March 10, 2014, in his home, surrounded by his loving family. Harvey was born on Oct. 9, 1956, at Harbour View Hospital in Sydney Mines. He was the son of Rose (Steele) MacKinnon and the late Alexander Steele. Harvey is survived by his wife of 35 years, Karen (Roland) Steele and by his three daughters, Crystal (Robert) Graves, Carrie (Johnathan) Gould and Danielle (Scott) Mennie, and his beloved granddaughter, Anna (Banana) Mennie. Harvey is also survived by his siblings, Marlene (Ralph) Tremblett, Brenda (Daryl) Pyke, and Glen Steele. Harvey was predeceased by his father Alexander Steele and his stepfather Hector MacKinnon. Harvey was an employee of Devco Prince Mine for 21 years and Marine Atlantic for 10 years. He was the strong silent type who would do anything for anyone and never expect anything in return. Harvey touched so many with his soft and humble character. He was an honest man with a big heart. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 12, 2014, in J.M. God broke our hearts to prove, he only takes the best.” Gordon 'Bimbo' White Born: January 26th, 1954 Passed on: March 9th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our son and brother Gordon 'Bimbo' White at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Gordon worked for Devco for 27 years after retirement he loved to travel to Bangor Maine on his camping trips. He also loved long drives with his dog (Trapper), watching his favorite hockey team Toronto Maple Leafs and his baseball team New York Yankees. Bimbo is survived by his mother Shirley (Mitchell) White; siblings Blair, Brenda, Doreen (Blair) Cole, also nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Gordon (Moe) White. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home, funeral service and burial will take place at a later date. Your ex Ruby Peddle Born In: Sydney Mines Born: October 10th, 1919 Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: March 8th, 2014 We regret to announce the passing of Ruby Peddle, 94, on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Sydney Mines on October 10, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Winnifred (Kelly) Halliday. She was a member of Holy Family Parish in Sydney Mines. She enjoyed Bingo, and taking Sunday drives with her family. She is survived by her only child Camillus (Wayne) Cavanaugh, Sydney Mines. She also leaves behind her grandson Rick, who she adored, and a special friend Brittany, who was like a granddaughter to her. Also surviving are her sisters Thelma Cooke and Ruth (Garf) Jenkins, both of Sydney Mines. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Fred Peddle; brothers Cecil and Laird; and her sister Pearl. Her family would like to thank Dr. Doug Kohlsmith, and the nurses and staff of 4 East for the excellent care she received, and also her roommates Betty, Edie and Gloria, and especially Patricia Edwards. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Dennis and Lois (MacKenzie) Fougere. Isabel was employed for 28 years in the dietary department, working at Breton Bay and Harbourstone. She was a self-taught crafter and guitarist, avid bingo player, and a great singer. She enjoyed going dancing with Claude. Isabel spent vacations travelling to spend time with her precious grandchildren. Isabel is survived by her partner and best friend, Claude Shepherd; her daughters, Dawn-Marie (Shannon) Mackie, Edmonton, Alta., Wanda MacEachern, Westmount, Elaine (Jim) Janson, Halifax; her stepchildren, Charles (Heather) Shepherd, Terry (Angel) Shepherd and 12 grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Aubrey, Noreen, Wayne, Karen, Della, Dennis, Heather, Norman, William, Paul and Wendy as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at the S.W.
