She resided there for the past two and a half years with her loving, surrogate family. Born in Bras d’Or on Dec. 15, 1925, Irene was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Jessome) Jessome. Irene was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines. Irene will be sadly missed by her son, David (Geraldine) Young, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; daughters, Brenda (the late George) Pollard, Montague, P.E.I., and Debra (Hopper) Porier, Sydney. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jeff (Karine) Young, Scott (Natalie) Young, Dalvay (Glenna) Pollard, Shonna Lee (Jason) McCarron, Caitlin (Corey) Porier, Charlotte (Adam) Porier and Shelby (Kyle) Porier. She was so proud to be great-grandmother to Katelynn, New Bruswick, Nolan, Ainsley and Cassie, Pennsylvania, Kyle and Tyler, Beach Point, P.E.I.. and Lucas, Montague, P.E.I. Many nieces and nephews will fondly remember 'Aunt Irene'. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, David Young, sisters, Hilda (John) McIntyre, Emma (Jim) Donovan, Viola (Jack) MacGean, Mary Jessome, and brother, Gordon (Irene) Jessome. There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday March 4, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Parish (the former St. Pius X Church), Main Street, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines, at a later date. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. She was born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, N.S. on Sept. 16, 1919. Margaret was the daughter of the late Roddie (Loretta) MacIntyre. Margaret was a former employee of the New Waterford Hospital and Massachusetts Hospital, in Boston, Mass. She enjoyed reading, dancing, and had a great sense of humour. Margaret was blessed with a genuine concern for the welfare of others, and helped many people who were in need. She is survived by her son, Steve (Lillian) Moseychuk; sister, Elizabeth (Jim) Gillis; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Victor, son, Robert (Bobby), sisters, Mary (Jack) Eldridge, Annie (Frank) MacPherson, Viola MacIntyre and one brother, Charles MacIntyre. Albert Legge Born: October 20th, 1920 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 1st, 2014 Loved by many, respected by all — it is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Albert Legge, age 93, at home. He will be deeply missed by his old and new friends. His family will especially feel the loss. He is survived by his dear wife of 50 years, Gladys, and seven children, Harold Legge, Linda Dixon (LLoyd), Joyce Power (Gordon), Joan Sinclair (David), Barbara Wallace, Deborah Rose and Susan DeWitt (Clif); grandchildren, Scott, Nicole, Laura, Kristin, Pamela, Gregory, Matthew and many great-grandchildren. Joseph Gillis Born In: Dominion Passed in: Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada Passed on: February 27th, 2014 Joseph Alexander Gillis, 78, of Moncton, N.B., son of the late Charles and Harriet (Slaunwhite) Gillis, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, after a short illness. Joseph was born in Dominion, Cape Breton, where he grew up until he joined the Armed Forces at the age of 18. He served his country for 26 years and was a Korean War veteran. He retired back in Cape Breton where he spent 32 years and worked as a Commissionaire in several different places. The last couple of years were spent living in Moncton. Joseph was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion and in his younger years, he enjoyed curling, darts, pool, golf, watching sports on TV and taking drives through the country. Joseph was much loved by all who knew him; he always had a joke or story to tell and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends and never forgotten. Survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Alexena (Jordan) Gillis; one son, Joseph (Darlene) Gillis of Orleans, Ont.; three daughters, Mary Trites (Larry) of Moncton, Kathy Belanger (Alain) of Woodlawn, Ont., and JoAnn Hafey (Wayne) of Milton, Ont.; eight grandchildren, Patti, Tony, Jennifer, Melanie, Greg, Charley, Sean and Julia; four great-grandchildren, Morgan, Katelyn, Alexina and Wesley; sisters, Frances Bailey and Helen Bailey of New Waterford, Cape Breton; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Joseph was predeceased by his son, Charles William and two brothers, Charles and William. In keeping with Joseph’s wishes, there will be no visitation hours. Frank Charles Munroe Oct. 8, 1922 - Feb. 28, 2014 With saddened hearts, but with hope eternal, we the family announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great- grandfather and friend. Frank passed away at home where he was lovingly cared for by his wife and soul mate, Edna. Always proud to have been born and raised in Whitney Pier, Frank was the youngest son of the late Angus and Lillian (Breen) Munroe. Frank attended Whitney School and Sydney Academy before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy. He served on HMCS Kapaskasing (minesweeper), HMCS Iroquois (destroyer) and HMCS Victoriaville ( frigate) while engaging in Convoy duty during the Battle of the Atlantic between Newfoundland and Ireland. Following his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Sydney where he studied at the Empire Business College. After graduation, he began employment in the insurance business working as an independent salesman for 12 years before joining Allstate Insurance, where he worked for 28 years. With his outstanding sales ability, Frank was a gold record winner as top salesman in North America and a two time top winner in both auto and home owners’ sales. Frank embraced life with energy and determination in a job well done, qualities he instilled in his children and grandchildren. His hobbies were varied; including fishing and hunting, skating, boating with family on the Mira, and before his illness, wintering in Florida. Frank loved to travel and his trip back to his roots in Scotland was most memorable. In his later years, although confined to a wheelchair, he looked forward to his daily jaunts around the block where he enjoyed socializing with neighbours. Many of his canine friends, especially Jiggs could count on Frank giving them a little treat. Frank was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, branch 128, and prior to his illness he was a member of the Naval Veterans Association. He was a strong supporter of various charities including, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Heart & Stroke, the Cancer Society, the Salvation Army and Christmas Daddies. He strongly believed in the value of a good education and willingly offered support to his children and grandchildren as they met their educational goals. Surviving are his devoted wife and best friend, Edna (Hallett); loving daughters, Carolyn Profit, Lisa (Andre Ouellette) Munroe, Nicole (Stephen) Hardy; grandchildren, Melanie, Melissa, Ryan, Evan; Cole, Zachary; Erika, Victoria, Kyle; special great-grandsons, Lucas, Brodie; brother-in-law, Lloyd Eddy and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers and sisters-in-law, Alexander ( Jean), John (Ann), Cyril (Mabel) and his sister, Annabelle. He was the last surviving nephew of Jack Munroe, the famed mining proprietor, war hero, author and boxer, honored in the Nova Scotia & Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Many thanks to Dr. Susan MacLeod, the VON and palliative care nurses who visited his home, and his three private caregivers, Gary Bernasky, Betty Morrison and John Bourgeois. Your kindness and compassionate care to Frank was always a comfort and much appreciated. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Sydney, today (Monday, March 3) from 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Chapel on Wednesday, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Thomas Whent and Rev. Boyce Elliott officiating. Burial is to take place at a later date, in Eastmount Cemetery, Whitney Pier.
