Cape Breton Deaths courtesy of CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION VISIT OUR WEBSITE - <http://www.cbgen.org/>www.cbgen.org NEW MEMBERS WELCOME John Dan MacDonald (June 4, 1915 - March 3, 2014) John Dan (Angus Alasdair Iain) MacDonald of Judique, NS passed peacefully on March 3, 2014 at Strait Richmond Hospital surrounded by his family. Born on June 4, 1915 in Millbrook (Judique), NS, he left home in the 1930s and worked the mines and lumber camps of Northern Quebec and Ontario. While in Ontario he joined the Lake Superior Regiment, which was part of the Canadian Advance that liberated Belgium and Holland. He was wounded for the 1st time in action at Bretville, France. During the final push through Germany in 1945, he was wounded and returned to action and helped liberate Russian prisoners near Brest, Germany. Dad always ensured that German prisoners were allowed to keep their bible. In 2009 he received the Holland medal of honour. He returned home in 1945 and married the beautiful Jessie Nicholson the next year. Following service to his country he was employed as a construction worker, miner, woodsman and lobster fisherman. He was a friend to all in Judique and surrounding areas. Dad was young at heart and treasured his time spent with friends and relatives. Everyone who visited their home enjoyed a hot cup of tea and Dad’s sharp wit. He is survived by his children Peggy, Toronto, ON, Georgina (Brian) Sydney, NS, Bernadette (Al) Swan Hills, AB, Mary (Meo) Senneterre, QC, Camille (Bob) Prince George, BC, Josie (Mike) Calgary, AB, Margie (Bill) Dartmouth, NS, Ian (Bev) Port Hood, NS. Grandchildren Jesse, Shane, Shannon, Kristen, Kelly (Andrew), Darren (Krista), Paul (Carole), Natalie (Serge), Robyn (Shane), Lasha, Jenna, James and Rori. Great-grandchildren Melissa , Patrick, Mackenzie, Theodore, Madison, Elisabeth and Declan. Sisters-in-law Josie MacDonald, Stoughton, MA, and Julie Nicholson of Milwaukee, WI. Along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sweetheart Jessie, parents Mary Belle Chisholm and Angus MacDonald, sisters – Mary Ann MacMaster and Margaret Preston, brothers – Alexander, Angus, Peter, Archibald James, George and Joe. Resting in the Community Room of the Judique Fire Department on Friday with visitation from 2pm to 9pm Funeral Mass will be offered Saturday at 11 am from St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church, with Rev. Allan MacMillan presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Judique Fire Department and Soldier On (PTSD Program).
