Murphy Born In: Georges River Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: March 18th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Florence Milida Murphy, age 68, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, on Tuesday March 18, 2014 at her home. Born in Georges River, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Reid and Dorothy (Richards) (Reid) Seymour. She was employed for a number of years at the Cara Restaurant in the Marine Atlantic Terminal, later at Bottoms Up Pub and then at the North Sydney Fire Hall. Florence was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, and was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Church. Florence was well known for her amazing sense of humour and sharp wit. She enjoyed singing, playing and entertaining the residents of the guest homes in the local area. Florence is survived by her husband Richard Murphy; her children, Kenny (Laura) Francis, Joy Francis, Carla Murphy (Keith Styles), Gordie Murphy (Allison Fitzgerald) and Kim (Adair) MacLellan; her five grandchildren, Albert, Emma, Jordan, Justin and Ariel and one great-grandchild Charlie. Also surviving are her siblings, Paulette Powers, Geraldine (Robert) MacKinnon, Percy (Carol) Reid, Joanne (Nelson) Scott, Mary Lou Reid, Rick (Monique) Reid, Ruth (Rick) Rioux, Gord (Sherry) Seymour and Dave Seymour (Jeanie Kaulback); sister-in-law Gloria Reid, brother-in-law George Pink and several nieces and nephews. William Herbert David 'Dave' Wade Born In: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Passed in: River Ryan, Canada Passed on: March 18th, 2014 It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of William Herbert David 'Dave' Wade, 66, on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in Hamilton, Ont., he was a son of the late Herbert and Lilly (MacCormick) Wade. Dave joined the Canadian Forces as a clerk where he served for 10 years then remustered as CEP Tech until retiring from the Reg. force. This was followed by an additional 12 years in the Reserve Force as a clerk. Dave gave very generously of himself to a host of groups, not least of which was Scouting at all levels from his youth to present. He served on the executive of the United Nations Peacekeepers Association, The Army, Navy, Airforce Veterans in Canada as well as the Legion simultaneously. Dave was a devoted family man, scouting trainer leader, group committee assistant, regional commisioner, and St. John's Ambulance trainer. Dave was happiest when surrounded by youth of all ages that he could give his outdoor skills and knowledge to. In essence, Dave gave more of himself then he gave to himself. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Leonie Wade (nee Kanne); daughters, Barbara Jean Lillian Wade, Susan Elizabeth Pearl Wade, both at home, Janet Louise Miller, River Ryan; son, Matthew David Herbert (Shalys), Edmonton, Alta.; sister, Pearl (Robert) Davie, Hamilton, Ont.; grandchildren, Trystan, Davielyn, Nicole and Michelle. Besides his parents, Dave was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth. Visitation will be held Friday, March 21 from 6-8 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Mary Honora (MacDonald) MacNeil Born In: New Waterford Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: March 17th, 2014 Mary Honora (MacDonald) MacNeil, age 92, of Halifax, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014, in the Halifax Infirmary, QE II. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of Angus A. and Honora MacDonald. She attended school at Mount Carmel in New Waterford followed by Mount Saint Bernard in Antigonish and completed her education graduating from the College of Pharmacy, Halifax in 1942. She loved her chosen profession and was employed for 52 years with Lawton’s Drugs and its predecessors, McLeod Balcolm and Balcolm-Chittick Ltd. Mary was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Chiefs and Petty Officers, Windsor Park. She was an avid skating enthusiast all her life. Mary is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jerome 'Jerry'; daughter, Joan (Rick); grandsons, Ryan and Lawren. She is also survived by her brother, Malcolm MacDonald (Mary), Ottawa and Helen Abbass (Ferris), Halifax, as well as sisters-in-law, Isabel Lewiskin, Halifax, Beatrice MacDonald, New Waterford; several nieces and nephews. Catherine MacEachern Born In: Inverness, Canada Born: November 22nd, 1921 Passed in: Cheticamp, Canada Passed on: March 18th, 2014 We, the extended family of Catherine Rita MacEachern, are saddened to announce her passing on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Foyer Perè Fisét in Cheticamp, Cape Breton. Catherine was born on Nov. 22, 1921, in Inverness, C.B. to Mary Ann (McEachen) and John MacEachern. She spent her life working in various domestic capacities and was respected for her dedication, strength and love for her work. Catherine loved Scottish music and played the piano for her ‘fiddler friends’ at her home. She and Jerry, her partner, were beautiful dancers and rarely missed an occasion to click their heels and swing to the music. She enjoyed gathering friends for summer kitchen ceilidhs, with plenty of her homemade delicious foods. Catherine practiced her faith at Stella Maris Church and lived it well in her community. She led a faith-filled daily prayer life at home. Catherine was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Dougald Angus, her sister, Mary Agnes Joyce, stepsisters, Margaret MacDonald, Mary Ann Flemming, stepbrother, Jim Dan MacEachern and her partner of many years. Jerry MacDonald. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was survived by Dougalda Cameron, Douglas MacEachern, Claire Briggs, Charlotte Jung, her lifelong friend and neighbour, several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews; great grandnieces and nephews and one great-great-grandniece. Lloyd Neil MacKenzie Born In: Glace Bay Born: May 2nd, 1947 Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: March 18th, 2014 It is with deep sadness the family of Lloyd Neil MacKenzie, 66, of Halifax announces his passing on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the QEII Hospital, with his loving family by his side. Lloyd was born in Glace Bay on May 2, 1947 and was raised in Sydney, Cape Breton. He was the son of the late Alexander 'Sandy' and Bernice MacKenzie. He worked at the Halifax Shipyards, in the accounting department holding various positions, for over 40 years and also served on the Residential Tenancy Board for a number of years. Lloyd was a longtime member of the Fairview Masonic Lodge #126 and was a Past Master, a past Grand Lodge Officer, and current secretary of the lodge. He was an active member of his community, serving on the Centennial Arena Rink Board and volunteered at the Halifax West Ecumenical Food Bank. He was a devoted, long time active member of Fairview United Church, where he served on various committees. Lloyd loved to travel, enjoyed country and gospel music, playing cards with friends, and above all, spending time with family, whom he adored. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Marilyn (Ross); daughter, Allison (Patrick Power); granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Brittany; brother, Howard; father and mother-in-law, Garfield and Peggy Ross, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Myrna and Linda Ross, Sydney; brother-in-law, Allie (Debbie) Ross and several nieces and nephews. Born in We'koqma'q, he was the son of the late Michael (Tata B.) and Ellen (Kiju) (Sylliboy) Googoo, and the eldest of 13 children and six foster children. William dedicated his life to mastering the art of basket making. As a young child he was taught the importance of the craft by his mother as both an art and a way to make a living. Both he and his late wife Alice perfected the craft and made it their lives work to keep traditional Mi'kmaw basket weaving alive. Together, the basket duo passed on their skills to hundreds of crafters as well as provided nationally acclaimed pieces of art for all to enjoy. Family was very important to William. He spent much time over the years fishing with family and hunting in the Cape Breton highlands with his brothers, nephews and nieces. William was a very actively involved member of the Sacred Heart Church, a veteran of the Second World War, member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Truro Branch; and was a strong presence at community events, powwows, and a regular on the community's annual pilgrimages to Ste. Anne de Beaupre, Quebec. He was a well respected elder of the Millbrook Mi'kmaw community with a great smile, sense of humour and stories that will never be forgotten. Russell Andrew Ratchford, MWO RCAF 1929-2014 We regret to announce the sudden passing of Russell Andrew Ratchford, 84, of New Victoria, N.S. Born in New Victoria, he was a son of the late Guy and Tina Ratchford of New Victoria He started his working life at Nova Scotia Light and Power, then after a stint at the Sydney Steel Plant, Russell joined the RCAF in 1952 and served in bases across Canada and Europe, attaining the rank of Master Warrant Officer. After retiring in 1981, Russell returned to live in New Victoria where he was involved with the New Waterford Ambulance Service with his son's Paul and Jason for several years. He had a great sense of humor and was very handy with his tools and liked to putter around the shop. Everyone he met has a 'Russie' story to tell.....usually 'outstanding’. He is survived by his two sons,Paul (Anne) and Jason (Michelle) and grandchildren Russell 'R.J.', Lilly and Jordon as well as their mother, Eleanor.
