After a long battle with cancer, Mom passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the Glace Bay Hospital with her loving family by her side. Joan’s journey on earth began in River Hebert, N.S. on September 7, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Garvin and Helen (Betts) Wolfe. Mom was a homemaker. She first lived in Port Morien and later moved to a farm in Broughton. Joan enjoyed knitting mittens and socks for her grandchildren, crocheting, doing jig-saw puzzles with her sister Eva, and going to bingo on Saturdays at the fire hall. She will always be remembered for her kind and generous nature. Mom loved to laugh and touched all those who knew her. Joan was the beloved wife of the late, Clarence 'Ches' MacDonald for 57 years, she was a loving sister to Eva MacIntosh and a loving mother to her sons and daughters, Stuart (Janet), Rita (John) Koole, Kenneth (Kay), David (Lin), Keith (Paddy), Brian (Angie) and Barbara; Joan will be sadly missed by her 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Ches, Joan was predeceased by her brother, Lorne. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Lydia E. MacKinnon will be held in the funeral home chapel on Monday, March 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. All are invited to join the family at a reception at the Birch Grove Fire Hall following funeral service. At this time we would like to thank Dr. Gordon Spencer, Dr. Ron MacCormack and the nurses on 3 east at the Glace Bay Hospital. Linda Lush Born In: Sydney Passed in: Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada Passed on: March 5th, 2014 It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Linda Lush Carter, beloved Daughter Sister, Mother, Wife, Aunt, Niece and Friend, on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in Nanaimo, BC, after a courageous battle with Cancer. Linda did many things in her life, touching many people. She was the first graduate from Holy Angels High School accepted into the Coast Guard College. She was a self taught Seamstress, took Massage Therapy, Horticulture and loved sports, especially water skiing and Volleyball in her younger years. She loved to go to the shooting range, where she didn’t miss many targets. When most women loved to receive jewelry and such as gifts, Linda wanted power tools, so she could make renovations to her home. Linda was predeceased by her Maternal and Paternal Grandparents Bill and Emily Penney and John and Sarah Lush, and by her brother John Jr. in infancy. Left to mourn and forever love her are her parents, Jack and Joan (Penney) Lush, Sydney; husband David Carter, BC; son Jesse (Emily Kitching) Bennett, BC; sisters Judy (Bo) MacNeil, Emily (Dave) Kukurudziak, ON; nephews Paul (Tiffany Peters) MacNeil, Sydney., Bryson (Emily) MacNeil, ON; niece Sabina Kukurudziak, ON; grand nephew Lachlan MacNeil, ON, and many cousins, aunts and uncles. Also by her beloved Cats. Before being cremated, Linda was an organ donor, and donated her eyes. Now someone will see the world as she did. Cremation has taken place in BC where a service to celebrate her life is being held. A memorial will be held in Sydney at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to: [email protected] or [email protected] Clare Murphy Born In: Grand Mira North Born: August 4th, 1917 Passed in: East Bay Passed on: March 6th, 2014 It is with sadness we announce the passing of Clare Murphy, formerly of East Bay, on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the MacGillivray Guest Home. Born in Grand Mira North on August 4, 1917, Clare was the daughter of the late Martin D. and Catherine (Campbell) Gillis. Clare is survived by children, Leo (Georgina), London, ON; Terry (Debbie), Yarmouth; Arlene Vassallo (Gary), Sydney Forks; Annette, Sydney; Tom (Carol), East Bay; Jerry (Mary Rose), East Bay; daughter-in-law Teresa Murphy, Glace Bay; brother, Alphonse Gillis, Falmouth, NS and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Harry; sons Bernie and Joe; sisters Ann Petrie, Florence Presseau, Lucy Ellen, Mary and Sister Josephine Gillis, CND; and brothers Donald, John Alex, Joseph, Allan, Lawrence and Bernard. Clare enjoyed spending time with her family. She was an avid baker known for her pies and biscuits, and she delighted in winning a game of 45’s, even in her later years. She was a long-standing member of St. Mary’s Parish and CWL. The family expresses sincere appreciation to MacGillivray Guest Home and their wonderful staff for their care and compassion during the last two years. Visitation for the late Mrs. Murphy will be held Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 6-9 p.m. at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Monday, March 10, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in East Bay with Rev. Frank Abbass officiating. Cremation will follow for burial at a later date in East Bay Cemetery. Donations in memory of Clare can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation and Canadian Cancer Society of Nova Scotia. Terry Walsh Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 6th, 2014 Theresa ‘Terry’ Walsh, formerly of Kennedy Avenue and Stuart Street, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility, where she was a resident for the past 5 ½ years. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Mary (MacInnis) Green and the late Eugene Grazel. Terry worked in the General Insurance Adjustment business with her husband Vern for many years before retiring after the sale of their company. She is survived by her husband Vernon and sister Margaret MacKenzie of Whycocomagh; nieces Terry and Carol; nephews Gary and Glenn; by her special grandniece Lindsay, the daughter she never had and many cousins, with special thanks to Lou and Kaye. Also thank you to all the staff on Irish Cove, Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility, who took such wonderful care of Terry. There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. Walsh. Henry 'Charles' Boutilier Born: October 3rd, 1986 Passed in: Fort St. John, British Columbia, Canada Passed on: February 20th, 2014 It is with broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of Charles Boutilier on Feb. 20 in Fort St. John, B.C. Charles was the son of Fred Boutilier and Nancy Georg. He is survived by his brothers Eric (Jody) and Allen who now reside in Fort St. John, B.C. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Charles was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Charles and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Boutilier, and maternal grandparents, Henry and Betty George. Charles touched so many with his soft and humble character. A definition of true, honest, and such sincere attitude that would glow when he entered a room. The family would like to thank all their East-Coast friends and family for the kindness and compassion extended to them during this difficult time.
