Born in North Sydney, Paul was the son of Josephine (Hood) MacNeil and the late Roderick MacNeil. He was postal worker with Canada Post until his retirement in 2008. He was a 3rd degree member of the Fr. William Keily Council of the Knights of Columbus and an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #19, North Sydney. Paul was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. He is survived by his mother Josephine 'Josie' MacNeil, North Sydney, his wife Mabel (Jardine) MacNeil, and his two sons, Jeffrey and Roddie MacNeil. Besides his father Roddie, he was predeceased his only brother John MacNeil in 2010. Paul will be remembered and missed by his beach friends and Royal Canadian Legion buddies and also by his little canine friend Eddy. Visitation for Paul will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. J.J. MacDonald officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Family flowers only. Online condolences may be sent to www.wjdooley.com George Jones Born In: Tower Road Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 14th, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of George Jones at Harbourstone Enhanced Care on Monday, Tuesday, March 17, 2014. He was the son of the late Elsie and Leslie Jones, Tower Road. Dad was the owner of George Jones Fuels for many years and a long haul trucker, hauling all over Canada and the U.S.A, and was also a fisheries officer in his earlier years. He had many stories to tell of his trips on the road, and greatly enjoyed fishing and going to card games. He is survived by his children, Georgina (Cory), Donnie (Sarah), Donna (Tommy), Jimmy (Lisa), Susan (Dave), Debbie (Greg); sister, Elsie MacLeod; brothers, Billy, Leslie and Jerry. He is also survived by stepchildren, Robin, Tammy, Michael, Bobby; grandchildren, Greg (Shauna), Cindy (Jason), Darren (Leigh), Aarron, Colten, Kaitlyn, Kristin, Conner, Samantha, Donnie, Corry, Mikayla, Amy, Alden, Christina, also many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth, brother, Clyde, son-in-law, Dan Kiley. Dad will be sadly missed by all that knew him. Shirley (Ryan) MacNeil Passed in: Ontario Passed on: February 28th, 2014 A memorial mass for the late Shirley (Ryan) MacNeil of Toronto, formerly of New Waterford, will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 20 in The Parish of Saint Leonard, New Waterford, Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. A reception will follow in St. Leonard Parish Hall, Convent Street. Our sister Shirley slipped peacefully away to be with the Lord on the morning of February 28, 2014, at the age of 79. She was the daughter of the late Barney and Ida (Tighe) Ryan of New Waterford. From a family of 16, she is survived by beloved sisters, Marilyn Ryan, Dolores Fraser and Vange Gaudet. She will be sadly missed by her sons, Daniel (Pauline), Steven and Glen (Robin), all of Ontario. Predeceased by her son, Brad (Sue). John Howie Born In: Glace Bay We regret to announce the death of John Charles Leonard Howie of Port Caledonia on March 17, 2014. Born in Glace Bay, John was the son of the late Leonard and Florence (Young) Howie. A graduate of Morrison High School and the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College, he taught school until his retirement in 1993. John held a diploma in administration. He taught school in Marion Bridge (1963-64), Big Glace Bay (1964-65) and Donkin. He was appointed principal of the elementary school in 1974 and in 1987 was appointed principal of the Donkin-Morien Complex, grades primary to 12. During his career he was involved in many community groups. He was past-president of the board of directors of the Savoy Theatre, past-president of the Industrial Cape Breton Council of Churches and past-president of the Canadian Child and Youth Drama Association and served a two year term as national president of Drama Canada. With a love for painting, John belonged to Art Cape Breton and showed paintings annually with the Sydney IODE Art Show. John loved music and was organist for several churches since 1962. He volunteered at Taigh Na Mara and the Glace Bay General Hospital playing for services weekly. He was a member of the Cape Breton Chorale since 1978. John is survived by his sister, Muriel (late Murray) Doncaster of Marion Bridge; nephew, Leonard Doncaster, Marion Bridge; niece, Joan (Donnie) Rankin of Windsor, Ont., and nephew, Kirby (Susan Ellis) MacLeod of New Zealand. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Joan MacLeod and brother-in-law, Robert MacLeod. At John’s request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date. Sr. Louise Doucette Passed in: Antigonish, Canada Passed on: March 17th, 2014 Sister Louise Doucette, 85, formerly Sister Regina Therese, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse on Monday, March 17, 2014. She was in her 52nd year of religious life. Born in Quinan, N.S., Sister Louise was the daughter of the late Adolphe and Regina (Doucette) Doucette. Sister Louise was the oldest in a family of twelve. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brother, Albert. She is survived by sisters, Dorothy Conrod, Zoe Kopetsky, Adeline (Joseph) Doucet, Cora (Henry) Caza and Lucie Doucette; brothers, Paul, Henry, Basil (Judy), Jules and Camille (Rita), Louise entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha in February 1960, pronounced her first vows in 1962, and made her perpetual commitment Aug. 15, 1967. Throughout her religious life Sister Louise ministered in the congregation household services. She served as homemaker for 34 years in local houses in Trenton, Heatherton, Guysborough, Eskasoni, St. Andrews, Canso, Ingonish, Antigonish and New Waterford in N.S.; in Ottawa, Ont. and Kamloops, B.C. For a period of six years she served on the Bethany housekeeping team. In 1992 Sister spent a year of renewal at Galilee, Arnprior, Ont. She retired at Bethany in 2004. During her life of faithful service, Sister Louise had the ability, in a quiet manner, to bring the outside community into her life. She was noted for her culinary contribution to wakes and other parish functions. The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning on Thursday, March 20, at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian burial will take place on Friday, March 21, at 2 p.m. Bethany Chapel. Winnifred Seymour 81, Neil’s Harbour It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, sister and grandmother, Winnifred Seymour. Winnie passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in New Haven on June 4, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Mary (Warr) Smith. She was a lifelong member of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Neil’s Harbour. She was a longtime employee of Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour. Winnie will be sadly missed by her husband Herbert, daughter Della (Stewart) MacDonald, son David ( Jordi), and her three cherished grandsons, Aaron MacDonald, Ewan and Nicholas Seymour, and Bailey and Olivia Symes, who thought of her as their grandmother, and her guardian angels Laura and Henry Rose. Also left to mourn are her sisters, Marybelle Rogers, Miriam Organ and Ann (David) Brown; her brother Jim (Eleanor) Smith, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Rosie, and brothers, John, Fred, Everett, Clifford and Stuart. Visitation for Winnie Seymour will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Neil’s Harbour. The funeral service will take place on Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, with Rev. Carolyn Sharpe officiating. A reception will follow the service. Memorial donations in Winnie’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Church or to a charity of your choice.
