Born in Sydney, she was the third eldest daughter of the late Neil and Johanna (Annie Mac) Chipman MacIntyre. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was a member of Sydney River United Protestant Church. Mom worked for many years at Breton Bay nursing home, where she developed many friendships. She enjoyed life to the fullest especially skating, sewing. knitting, cooking, and cheering at hockey games for her grandchildren as well as the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Ruth enjoyed most of all spending time with her family in Halifax, Ingonish, and travels elsewhere. Mom's life centered around her unconditional love for her family and friends, and was actively involved in their lives. Mom is survived by her five children, David (Priscilla), Lloyd (Carolyn), Glen, Debra (John) Kirkpatrick and Judy (Marcel McKeough), and her 15 grandchildren, Jonathan, Ryan, Brent, Maeghan, Damon, Murray, Nyles, John, Neil, Logan, Lesley, Michael, Christine, Breagh and Maggie and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her husband Neil MacSween, sisters Irene Clarke, Jean MacCharles, Mary Landry, and brothers Billy, Johnny, Buddy, Jimmy, David and infant brothers Conrad and Donald. Visitation will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, George Street, Sydney on Tuesday, March 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with funeral service at Sydney River Untied Protestant Church on Wednesday, March 19 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jason Keeping Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: March 14th, 2014 With tearful eyes and broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of Jason Daniel Keeping, 34, beloved husband, father, son and brother on Friday, March 14, 2014. Jason leaves behind his loving wife of 11 years Julie (Forrest) and the two “lights of his life” — his children, Gracie and Owen. Also left to mourn are his parents, Joanne (Inder) and Clyde Keeping; his brothers, Vinnie (Carrie) Keeping, Clayton (Jen) Keeping and Dennis Keeping; his paternal grandmother Gwen Keeping; maternal grandparents Mildred and Donald Inder; father-in-law George “Brother” Forrest, all of North Sydney. Jason is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends as well as the Forrest family. Jason was predeceased by his grandfather Berkeley Keeping and his mother-in-law Eileen Forrest. Jason’s devotion to his family had no limits. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fly fishing in Margaree, golfing and his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. His incredible smile, his laugh and his personality will live in our hearts forever. Jason’s family would like to thank the EHS paramedics, along with the Emergency nurses and doctors at Northside General Hospital. Carmel Gaudet Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 15th, 2014 Mary Carmel Gaudet of Vista Heights, Sydney, passed away on Saturday March 15, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Rita (Chiasson) Chisholm. Formerly of Mira Road she was a member of St. Anthony Daniel parish and a longtime member of the parish CWL. She was a graduate of Holy Angels High School and Holy Redeemer Business Class. She was a former civil servant employed with the National Employment and Unemployment Insurance offices. Mary’s last employer was Family service of Eastern Nova Scotia from which she retired in 1987. She was a member of Seaview Golf and Country Club, St. Anthony Daniel Folk Choir, the Shauna Doolan Choir, Sacred Heart Memory Lane Singers, Whitney Pier Senior Singers and Club 55. She is survived by a son Allan (Betty), grandchildren Angela, Sydney, David (Shauna), Cole Harbour, two great-grandsons, Cohen and Noah, sister Lorraine Fennell, Sydney, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband John H. Gaudet in 1991 and her brother Jack Chisholm. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 20 at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony Daniel Church with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. MacLean Born In: Sydney Born: May 30th, 1935 Passed in: Sdyney Passed on: March 15th, 2014 It is with great sadness we wish to announce the passing of John Sutherland MacLean at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Saturday March 15, 2014, surrounded by his family. A resident of Davenport Road, Sydney, J.S. was born on May 30, 1935, the son of the late Samuel and Isabel (Telfer) MacLean. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. A retired steelworker he worked for over 30 years in the Sysco Railway Department. John is survived by his wife the former Marjorie Anderson, son John, daughter Isabel, grandchildren David, Matt, John, Alex, Emily, Peter and great-grandchild D.J. He was predeceased by a sister Veronica and a son David. Visitation for the late Mr. MacLean will take place on Wednesday, March 19 from 2-4 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Tim 'Dook' Donovan Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: March 15th, 2014 Formerly of 2nd Street in New Aberdeen and New Hampshire, U.S.A., Dook passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Timothy and Mary (‘Min’ Foley) Donovan. Dook had a great passion for working with horses and was a horseman throughout Canada and the U.S.A. He will be remembered by many for his contribution to the horse racing game. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews in Glace Bay and the U.S.A.; and, his caregiver/guardian and niece Shirley (Alex) MacCuish. Dook was predeceased by his wife, Mary, four brothers, Jim, Francis, Wishy and Bill and by one sister Ann McInnis. Gladys McDougall Born In: Belloram Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: March 16th, 2014 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and sister, Gladys M. McDougall, 89, on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the Northside Community Guest Home, North Sydney, after a long battle with Alzheimers disease. Gladys was born in Belloram, Newfoundland, a daughter of the late Ralph and Cora (Bishop) Skinner. She was a longtime resident of Brook Street, North Sydney, and was a member of St. Joseph Church. Gladys is survived by her son, Bill (Louise) McDougall, Groves Point, N.S.; two daughters, Anne (Bernie) Bouchard, North Sydney, and Stella (Bruce) Canderlic, Lower Sackville N.S.; her eight grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren; by her two brothers, Lance Skinner, Gander, N.L., Steve Skinner, B.C. Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Angus Joseph MacDougall, her sisters, Sadie Roberts, Hilda Strobridge and brother, Bob Skinner. No visitation will be held by request. Bridget (McEachern) LeBlanc Born In: Reserve Mines Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: March 15th, 2014 Bridget (McEachern) LeBlanc, 92, of LeDrew Street, New Waterford, and formerly of Reserve Mines, died peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the New Waterford Hospital. Born in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Catherine ‘Katie’ (Finnell) McEachern. Bridget was a woman of strong faith. She was a member of the 3rd Order Lay Carmelite Community of St. Elijah, a CWL member and attended daily mass on a regular basis. Bridget worked at the Tasty Treat, Heather Tavern (kitchen) and the New England Baptist Hospital in Roxbury, Massachusetts as a nurse’s aid. She was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be sadly missed by all. Bridget is survived by one son, Joe (Karen), Windsor, Ontario; four daughters, Maureen Finlayson, Scotchtown, Yvonne McQueen, River Ryan, Ann Marie McDonald (Earl), Moncton, Karen Clements-Bedi (Amarjit), Moncton; one brother, John Angus McEachern, New Waterford; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great - great grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Hattie Chiasson, New Victoria, many nieces, nephews and a special cousin, Rev. Reginald Currie, East Bay. Bridget was predeceased by her husband, Henry LeBlanc of Cheticamp in 1992, siblings, Roddie, Robert ‘Bobby’, Walter ‘Brother’, Roy, Mary Fraser, Catherine ‘Ca’ MacDonald, Nora ‘Nonie’ Deveaux, son-in-law, John Finlayson, two grandchildren, Stephanie Finlayson and Michael Clements. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5-8 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass concelebrated by Rev. Ray Huntley and Rev. Reginald Currie will be Tuesday, 10 a.m. in St. Leonard Church. Interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. A reception will follow in St. Leonard Parish Hall, Convent Street. Joe 'Bugie' Nemis Born In: New Waterford Born: April 20th, 1923 Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: March 13th, 2014 Joseph 'Bugie' Nemis passed away peacefully on March 13, 2014, at Harbourstone after a long battle with Alzheimers. He is survived by his wife Rita and daughter JoAnn. Joe was born in New Waterford on April 20, 1923, and remained connected to the town all his life. His parents Joseph and Enrica emigrated from Udine, Italy. He was predeceased by brothers, Johnny, Louie, Dominic and James. Joe was the youngest in this well-known boxing family. He was also predeceased by sisters, Rena, Anna, and Edith. Special thank you to Joe's nephew, Leno and his wife, Pauline for the constant attention and thoughtfulness given to him during his time at Harbourstone. The family is also grateful to the nursing staff and aides at HS for their kindness, patience, and diligence during his illness. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. There will be no visitation or funeral mass. Ethel Denny Born In: Middleton, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 14th, 2014 It is with deep sadness, that we, the family, announce the passing of our loving wife, mother and friend, Ethel Denny. Mom passed away on Friday, March 14, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with her loving family by her side. Born in Middleton, N.S., she was the daughter of the late George and Viola (Aulenback) Penny. Ethel was a stay at home mom and this was a vocation she truly enjoyed. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, crocheting, doing word search puzzles, playing darts and bingo. She was an avid bowler and a member of many leagues over the past years. Ethel always put the needs of others before those of her own and she always tried to make everyone happy. She was a great wife, mother and her family was her #1 concern. Ethel leaves behind her loving husband, Bill Denny; daughters, Julia Denny, Bedford, Joan Warren, Bridgewater, Mary Jane Denny, at home; she will also be sadly missed by sisters, Daisy Zinck, Thelma Whynot, Carolyn Zwicker; brothers, Gerald and David, all of mainland N.S., many nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by a sister, Josephine Jollymore. In honouring Ethel’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Willina (Layton) Strang Born In: New Waterford Born: February 21st, 1938 Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: March 12th, 2014 Willina Carmel (Layton) Strang, aged 76, of Greenwood, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, with family by her side. She will be sadly missed, happily remembered and never forgotten. Born Feb. 21, 1938, in New Waterford, Cape Breton, she was the only daughter of the late William and Jessie (McIssac) Layton. Following graduation from nursing in Sydney, Willina was married in 1962 to Bill, who was a member of the air force. They lived across Canada in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, retiring in Greenwood. Willina is survived by her daughter, Beth (Scott) MacKeigan, Kingston, N.S.; son, David Strang, Greenwood; mother-in-law, Cedella Lockhart, the Cove Guest Home, Sydney and grandchildren, Paul and Ryan MacKeigan. She was predeceased by her husband, William 'Bill' Ellis Strang and son, Joseph. Cremation has taken place and arrangements have been entrusted to Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2014 with Mr. Gary Grant officiating. Mary is survived by her sons, Billy (Colleen) and Jimmie (Leonor) Dragatis; grandchildren, Mitchell, Courtney, Kelly, Steven and Natalie; one great-grandson, Aiden and many other family and friends.
