Michael Kyte Born In: Sydney Passed on: March 27th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fr. Michael Kyte, O.P., in Chicago, on Thursday, March 27, 2014, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Sydney in 1953, he was the son of the late Arthur and Marie Kyte and the beloved stepson of the late Ruth (MacLean) Kyte. A graduate of Dalhousie University and Aquinas Institute of Theology, Fr. Michael volunteered with CUSO, in Nigeria, prior to entering the Dominican Order in 1981. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1987 and spent his career in Chicago and Denver, Colorado, where he was the longtime Novice Master. He returned to Chicago and served as Prior of St. Vincent Ferrer Dominican Community in River Forest, Illinois and until most recently he was Prior Priory in Chicago. A gifted preacher, Fr. Michael had a wide following of friends in Chicago, Denver, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. A testament to his character was evident recently when over 1,000 people attended an Anointing of the Sick and Communal Prayer service for him in Chicago. Fr. Michael is survived by sisters, Ardith, Coreen (Colin MacDonald), Lois (Bob) Feeney) and brothers, Donald (Debbie), John (Sheila Gallagher), Lorne, Roy (Karen) and adoring nieces, Erin Kyte, Jenna Kyte, Megan Feeney, Jessie MacDonald, Michelle MacDonald, Sarah Gallagher as well as nephews, Andrew Kyte (Tasha), Matthew Kyte, Brett Feeney, Alec Kyte and Paul Gallagher as well as grandnephew, Kieran Kyte and grandniece and namesake, Micah Kyte. The Rite of Christian Burial will take place at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in River Forest, Illinois, on Tuesday, April 1, where Fr. Michael was associate pastor for the past seven years. Interment will take place at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plains, Illinois. Messages of condolences may be directed to ([email protected]) Bert 'Etts' Monahan Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 26th, 2014 With heavy hearts, the family of Ethelbert Monahan, regret to announce his passing on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Robert and Bridget (Whelan) Monahan. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1970, Bert enjoyed his friends, bowling, dancing and Club 55. He is survived by his companion and best friend, Isabel McPhee; sons, Michael, Sydney, Paul (Jamie), Ontario; daughters, Carol, Patricia (Tilman) and Theresa (Angelo), all of Ontario and is survived by 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are stepchildren, Leona (Cliff), Donald (Josie), Rochell (Rob), Marie (John) and Robert (Dawn). He was predeceased by his wife, Nellie (Quarmby) and son, David and by four brothers and five sisters. There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Monahan. Funeral service will be held at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tom Whent officiating. Interment at a later date. Mary Bonner Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: March 25th, 2014 Mary Bonner, age 81 of Princess Street, Glace Bay, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Margaret Ann (MacDonald) Bonner. Mary was a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. Mary is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Watkins) MacDonald (husband, Kevin - deceased), Lynn (Watkins) Dearing (husband, David); five sons, Paul Watkins, Duane Watkins, Michael Watkins, Roddie Watkins and Francis Watkins. Also surviving are Mary's two brothers, Buddy Bonner (Colleen), Francis Bonner (Peggy); one sister, Rodena 'Roddy' LeCreux (Louie); several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by three sons, John 'Butch', Richard 'Rickey' and Harold Watkins; one brother, Grady Bonner and one sister, Shirley Bonner. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m.; all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Rev. Valerie (Donovan) MacNeil Born: February 8th, 1957 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: March 26th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Valerie (Donovan) MacNeil, 57, of Bras d’Or. Surrounded by her family, Valerie passed peacefully Wednesday morning at the Northside General Hospital. Valerie was the daughter of the late Tom and Babs (Butts) Donovan. She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Brenda Lee Jack. Also left to mourn are her grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, friends, and the love of her life. Her family would like to thank the doctors and nurses on the 4th and 5th floors at the Northside General, and the ICU Unit in Sydney. There will be no visitation. Ronald Snow Ronald Chestly Snow, 79, of Glace Bay passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014, at his home with his family by his side. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Robert and Stella Snow. Ronald was a very hard worker all of his life as a coal miner and a carpenter he would try anything. He was a very kind hearted man and will be sadly missed by many family and friends. He is survived by companion and best friend, Patricia Moore; sons, Dwight (Laura), Bobby (Melanie), Clyde (Sharon) and Arthur; daughter, Marlyn (Allan); brothers, Don (Pat) and Doug (Ann). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, his pride and joy Patricia and Robert who were there with him until the end and his dog Buddy who laid beside him every day. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Richard. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 29 at 2 p.m. at Salvation Army Church, Union St., Glace Bay. Neil Royal Passed in: Hinton, Alberta, Canada Passed on: March 24th, 2014 With a heavy heart and great sadness the family of Neil Royal, announce his passing on Feb. 24, 2014 in Hinton, Alta. Left to treasure his memories are Neil's loving wife, Wilma; daughters, Nancy (Ross) Williams and Corinne Royal, all of Edson, Alta.; also by his precious grandchildren, Corey, Jeff, Katie, Garrett, and Cree. Neil is also survived by his three sisters, Ruth (Phil) Batten, Kitty Caines and Barbara (Richard) Riva Cambrin, all of Grande Cache, Alta.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many treasured friends.
