Ramsey, 77, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Northside General Hospital with his family by his side. Born in North Sydney, Hugh was the son of the late David H. and Harriet (Benoit) Ramsey. Hugh began his working life as a driver for Snow White Laundry and Dry Cleaners, later working as a dry cleaner, then in the credit department at Woodhouse Furniture in Sydney. Subsequently, he spent a number of years as a screen printer with his brother at Ramsey Signs in Sydney and worked at Walmart in Sydney until his retirement in 2001. Hugh was a faithful and active member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney where he served for 33 years as a lay reader, Eucharistic minister, crucifer, co-ordinator of servers, a member of the Fellowship Group, a minister of home communion and member of the parish council. Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Margie; his daughter, Rev. Lori Ramsey (Robert Cullen), Truro; his son, Terry (Sherry) Ramsey, Sydney Mines; his four treasured grandchildren, Emily and Mark Ramsey, Hannah and Sarah Cullen; his sister, Marie McCormick, Hagersville , Ont.; brothers, Eugene (Jean) Ramsey, Sydney Mines, Bill (Brenda) Ramsey, Berwick, Harold (Pearl) Ramsey, Sydney, Carl Ramsey, North Sydney, Glenn (Royce) Ramsey, Halifax, and many special nieces and nephews who played a large part in his life. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Ronald, a brother and sister in infancy and a brother-in-law, John McCormick. Hugh was very grateful to the Canadian Blood Services and the countless number of blood donors for the transfusions he received over the past number of months. Hughʼs family encourages family and friends to become blood donors as a way of honoring his memory. Visitation for Hugh will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will take place Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. James 'Jimmie' Villa Born In: New Waterford Passed on: February 28th, 2014 It is with extremely heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of James Francis 'Jimmy' Villa, at home on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Fiorentino and Mildred (Gouthro) Villa. Jimmy devoted his life to helping others, he worked 35 years as an LPN, retiring this past October from the Glace Bay Hospital. He was a true movie buff and also enjoyed spending time at the family cottage in Loch Lomond in his earlier days. Jimmy is survived by his wife, Melissa (Reid) and his only son, Marcus at home. Also left to mourn Jimmy’s passing are his brothers, Robert (Charlene), New Waterford, Kevin, Sydney; sisters, Mildred (Ollie) Wilson, Dartmouth, Ann Marie (Steve) Ansell, Ontario, Debbie (Donnie) Peckham, Mira; several nieces, nephews, friends and co-workers. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by sisters Yvonne Thomas, Ontario, and Lucille MacIsaac, New Waterford. Visitation for Jimmy will be held Thursday, March 6, 2014, from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. John Bailey Born In: Sydney Mines Passed in: Sydney Mines Passed on: March 3rd, 2014 Family and friends of John Frederick Bailey wish to share news of his passing at the age of 86, on Monday, March 3, 2014, at the Northside General Hospital. Born and raised in Sydney Mines, John F., as he was well known, was the son of the late Frederick and Lucy Bailey. He was a member of Holy Family parish in Sydney Mines. John was a very kind, gentle and caring person and well known for his wit. John F., in his earlier years, was employed with the British Canadian Co-op, and then operated his own men’s clothing store in Sydney Mines. He was very active in his community throughout his life, serving on the Sydney Mines Town Council, a member of the William B. MacLeod 4th Degree Council, as well as life member of the Santa Maria Council 2024, and past Grand Knight, past president of the Kiwanis Club of Ceilidh Golden K. John F. was also a board member of Kinsmen Day Care, Princess Credit Union, and Northside Homemakers Services Society. "We love you, until we meet again, go in peace” Donald MacLeod Born In: South Bar Passed in: South Bar Passed on: March 2nd, 2014 Donald Stanley MacLeod, 87, of South Bar, passed away Sunday March 2, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in South Bar, he was the son of the late Angus James and Eliza (Meech) MacLeod. Donald was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney. In 1989, he retired from the electrical department of SYSCO. He is survived by his daughter, Juana (Rob), South Bar; sons, Donald (Fay), Lethbridge, Alta. and Eric (Colleen), Coxheath; sister, Ruth (Maurice) Bidart, Sydney; and the two loves of his life, granddaughters, Lauren and Julie. Donald was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite (Boutilier); sisters, Dorothy and Winnifred; and brothers, George, Wilson, Doug and Lewis. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail [email protected] Margaret 'Margie' Allen Born In: Sydney Mines Born: April 21st, 1948 Passed in: Antigonish, Canada Passed on: February 27th, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Margaret Christina (Pentecost) Allen on Feb. 27, 2014, at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Sydney Mines on April 21, 1948, Margaret was the youngest daughter of the late James and Annie (Briggs) Pentecost. She married the love of her life, Bruce, and had two wonderful sons, Troy and Kyle. Margaret was a pillar in the Fortress of Louisbourg community as a member of the volunteer militia. Margaret, fondly called 'Margie', moved to River Bourgeois after the death of her husband and quickly became an active member of the senior community. She loved to play darts, cards and frequent bingo whenever she could. Margaret leaves behind to mourn her passing two sons, Troy (Martha) and Kyle (Sonya). She also leaves behind her two cherished grandchildren, Caelin and Maeryn, who were the light of her life. Her brother Eddie (Mary Ellen) and sister Anne Marie (Joseph) will miss her greatly. She made many friends where ever she lived and will be sadly missed by all those hearts she touched. She was predeceased by her husband Bruce, sister Mary and brother John. The family would like to extend thanks to the support staff and special friends, mom spoke kindly of you all. Frank Charles Munroe Born In: Whitney Pier Born: October 8th, 1922 Passed on: February 28th, 2014 With saddened hearts, but with hope eternal, we the family announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Frank passed away at home where he was lovingly cared for by his wife and soul mate, Edna. Always proud to have been born and raised in Whitney Pier, Frank was the youngest son of the late Angus and Lillian (Breen) Munroe. Frank attended Whitney School and Sydney Academy before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy. He served on HMCS Kapaskasing (minesweeper), HMCS Iroquois (destroyer) and HMCS Victoriaville (frigate) while engaging in Convoy duty during the Battle of the Atlantic between Newfoundland and Ireland. Following his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Sydney where he studied at the Empire Business College. After graduation, he began employment in the insurance business working as an independent salesman for 12 years before joining Allstate Insurance, where he worked for 28 years. With his outstanding sales ability, Frank was a gold record winner as top salesman in North America and a two time top winner in both auto and home owners’ sales. Frank embraced life with energy and determination in a job well done, qualities he instilled in his children and grandchildren. His hobbies were varied; including fishing and hunting, skating, boating with family on the Mira, and before his illness, wintering in Florida. Frank loved to travel and his trip back to his roots in Scotland was most memorable. In his later years, although confined to a wheelchair, he looked forward to his daily jaunts around the block where he enjoyed socializing with neighbours. Many of his canine friends, especially Jiggs could count on Frank giving them a little treat. Frank was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, branch 128, and prior to his illness he was a member of the Naval Veterans Association. He was a strong supporter of various charities including, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Heart & Stroke, the Cancer Society, the Salvation Army and Christmas Daddies. He strongly believed in the value of a good education and willingly offered support to his children and grandchildren as they met their educational goals. Surviving are his devoted wife and best friend, Edna (Hallett); loving daughters, Carolyn Profit, Lisa (Andre Ouellette) Munroe, Nicole (Stephen) Hardy; grandchildren, Melanie, Melissa, Ryan, Evan; Cole, Zachary; Erika, Victoria, Kyle; special great-grandsons, Lucas, Brodie; brother-in-law, Lloyd Eddy and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers and sisters-in-law, Alexander (Jean), John (Ann), Cyril (Mabel) and his sister, Annabelle. He was the last surviving nephew of Jack Munroe, the famed mining proprietor, war hero, author and boxer, honored in the Nova Scotia & Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Many thanks to Dr. Susan MacLeod, the VON and palliative care nurses who visited his home, and his three private caregivers, Gary Bernasky, Betty Morrison and John Bourgeois. Condolences may be made to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or email [email protected] Father’s love never dies ... it glows eternal ... forever in our hearts Robert Lawrence Roach Born In: New Waterford Born: July 10th, 1936 Passed in: Alberta Passed on: February 24th, 2014 Robert 'Rob' Lawrence Roach, cherished husband of Nicki passed away peacefully at home Feb. 24, 2014, with his family at his side. Rob is survived by his wife of 53 years and two daughters, Dennise (Sue) and Deanna Wrate and his grandsons, Benjamin and Tanner. He is predeceased by his parents and nine siblings. Rob was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, July 10, 1936. He made his way west to Calgary, Alberta in 1958, where he lived, worked and raised his family until retiring further west in Ladysmith, BC in 2003. Rob is best known for his love of music, sense of humour and his extreme generosity. This was evident as there was always room and food for the ‘man’ that came over the hill. Rob brought people together with love, laughter and music. To all of us he was larger than life and everyone knew when he was around. He treasured his wife, Nicki and his family was the world to him. He was a much-loved Dad, Papa, Brother, Uncle, and Mr. Wilson. He will leave a huge hole in many lives, but his legacy of family and friends first and generosity will never be forgotten. There will be an open house celebration of his life at their home 460 Belaire Street in Ladysmith on March 8, 2014 between the hours of 2-6 pm. Telford’s of Ladysmith, 1-250-245-5553 Frank Sokolovsky Age 87 passed away Feb. 22, 2014. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, he was the son of the late Frantisek and Julia. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 and after several years of working in Quebec, a job opportunity brought him to Nova Scotia. He was always a people person and loved to joke and bring out a laugh or smile from others. He loved to dance, enjoyed music and was an avid bowler, golfer and a great sports fan. A machinist by trade he founded two companies — Hydraulics Plus in Upper Sackville, and Cape Breton Hydraulics in Sydney. He loved to drive and covered thousands of miles over many years between the two shops. A devoted husband and grandfather, he will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Helen; son, Sylva; daughter, Nadia (Danny) Menary, and grandchildren, Kyra, Jordan and Devin. Cremation has taken place under the care of Donald K. Walker Funeral Directors Ltd., Dartmouth.
