Jack Cox Born In: Netherlands Born: April 5th, 1939 Passed in: Baddeck Passed on: March 24th, 2014 With heavy hearts and a feeling of great loss, we the family of Jack Theodore Cox regret to announce his passing on March 24, 2014 in Baddeck, N.S. at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital. Jack was born in Meijel, Netherlands on April 5, 1939, the son of the late William and Marie (Snickers) Cox. He is survived by his wife, Mabel (MacDonald) Cox and sons, Sean (Janice), Baddeck and Cory (Natasha), Halifax. Family was always important to Jack and the greatest of his treasures were his four grandchildren, Jake, Tara, Taylor and Alyssa. Time spent with Jake and Tara was especially precious; be it fishing mackeral at the wharf, playing checkers or going for ice-cream. Of course Jake and Opa had many debates over their favourite hockey teams while Tara would usually be on Opa side. Nothing would bring a smile to “Opa's” face more quickly than their visits, hearing Taylor tell him that she was “DUTCH” and getting her news on Alyssa. Jack is also survived by his brothers, Leo (Annie) Cox, Mabou and Peter (Debbie) Cox, Alberta and sisters, Joanne (Frank) McKenna, Ontario, Mia (Bob) MacDonald, North Sydney, Lenie (Roger) MacAulay, Halifax, Gasha (Lee) Connolly, Truro, Mientje (George) Campbell, Sydney, Rietje Nicholson, Ontario and Melisha (Joey) Davis, Halifax. Jack worked construction for many years until determination and hard work made his goal of building a business in Baddeck a reality. In 1980 he opened Coxweld Ltd. and he was a proud and passionate owner until 2008, when he retired due to poor health. His greatest pleasures at “The Shop” came when there was a project requiring design or modifications and of coarse finding innovating ways to make things work. Phrases like “that can be repaired” or “save that, we can use that for ........” was his creative thinking at work. He truly valued his relationships with “The Guys” that worked at the shop over the years and also his association with customers that supported his business. Throughout his life, Jack has supported and been involved in many community organizations including Minor Hockey, Lions Club, Fire Dept., Curling Club and the Village Commission. He was a strong advocate for the growth and development of his community and liked to see improvements that helped create future opportunity. Jack's friends will remember him best for his wonderful sense of humour, love of fishing and curling, interest in world affairs and love of reading. The family wants to extend heartfelt thanks to the doctors and all staff at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital. Words cannot express our appreciation for the care Jack has received over the years and in particular during his most recent visit. A special thanks to Dr. Carly Chow for his years of friendship and encouragement and support with his health issues. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A service will be held in Baddeck at the MacAulay Conference Center on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 2 p.m. A social gathering will follow the service at the Conference Centre until 6 p.m. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Jack may be made to either The Victoria County Memorial Hospital Foundation or The Victoria Highland Civic Centre.
