Phyllis Rountree Born In: Glace Bay Born: July 5th, 1931 Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: April 7th, 2014 Phyllis Arlene Rountree, 83, of Halifax, died on April 7, 2014 in hospital, of complications from a stroke. Phyllis was born in Glace Bay, N.S. on July 5, 1931 to the late Robert and Phyllis MacDonald. Her brother Eric, her senior by nine years, was killed at age twenty in the Second World War. She married the late Seddon Vibert 'Ted' Rountree in October of 1959. She is survived by her two sons, Eric Robert (Vanessa Buhr-Rountree) and Scott Gregory (Starr Carvery), both of Halifax; her cousin, Heather Osler of Glace Bay and her sister-in-law, Patricia Chénard of Montréal. Phyllis attended Glace Bay High School and took a fine arts programme at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, where she was fortunate enough to meet and learn from artist Lawren P. Harris, son of the great Lawren S. Harris of the Group of Seven. Her love of the arts was lifelong. She was a gifted painter, and she also sang beautifully and played piano. She was a member of the Armdale Chorus, who surprised her and her new husband with a performance at their wedding. Phyllis worked for the CBC in the 1950s, first as a secretary to station manager Sydney Kennedy, and later as a producer of a fashion segment for the supper-hour news programme. As with art, her love of fashion—and her fashion sense—was well known and lifelong. She was named one of Canada’s ten best-dressed women by New Liberty Magazine. Later in her life, she worked for Dalhousie University’s human resources department, where she again started as a secretary and moved up to become a staffing officer. Nothing delighted her more than finding the right job for the right person. Phyllis loved people: Meeting them, talking with them, getting to know them. Her sense of humour was always present, even in something as mundane as a doctor’s appointment. It was with her until the very end. Most of all, Phyllis was a mom. Her family was always top priority, and she gave all her love and commitment to raising her sons and making a warm, loving home. She will be terribly missed. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 13th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. The funeral service will take place in the funeral home chapel on Monday, April 14th at 2 p.m., Rev. James Haughn officiating. In lieu of sending flowers, please make a donation to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.atlanticfuneralhome.com, Halifax Chapel. Charles S. Wall Born In: Boston Born: December 18th, 1908 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 9th, 2014 After a lifetime of dedication and quiet contribution to his family and community, Charles S. Wall, formerly of 16 Sutherland St., passed away peacefully on April 9, 2014. He was born in Boston, Mass., Dec. 18, 1908, to John and Veronica (Healey) Wall. Dad was married to the late Anne (Gillis) Wall and had 10 children, Cyril, Charles (Mary), Geraldine (Ken Grant), Lorraine McCormick, Rose (Buddy Norman), Delores MacLeod, Tessie (Joe Snow), Dennis and Bonita (Alex Calder), whom dad lived with for 16 years before going to the home. He also leaves behind 27 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law Jessie Wall. Dad split his youth between Boston and Sydney. He worked with Sydney Steel for 47 years doing various jobs and ended his career as a conductor. He was very involved in his community and gave freely of his time to the March of Dimes, The Steel Workers Union (Local 1064) for which he held various offices, The Sydney Water Commission, The Senior Advisory Board of Canada, and the Liberal Party. He was also very involved with the Mutual Benefit Society for which he served as president for a number of years until he retired in 2002. Dad was also a 4th degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus. As one of the founding members of the Steel Worker’s Pensioner’s Hall, Dad was very involved in getting funding to have the hall built and served as president for years. Dad was once described as a statesman by a Liberal friend but to the family he was a man who led by example. He was dedicated to his family, church, workers at the plant and to his community. He served as an adult alter server along with Bernie MacNeil and Austin MacCormick. They later became known as the ABC adult altar servers for many masses. One thing Dad enjoyed doing was travelling to parts of Canada, United States and Europe. Dad was predeceased by his father, mother, his wife, son Ervin, granddaughter Debra, great-grandson Greg Norman, daughters-in-law Edith, Norma and Claire, sons-in-law Lynn MacLeod and Wick McCormick, brother Willie, sisters Rose Kempt and Mabel Green, his stepmother Mary MacIssac, brothers Donald (Anne), Roddie (Sue), Raymond and John Wall, sisters Betty MacLellan (Daniel) and Margaurite Gaudet (Ray). Dad was also loved by his companion of many years, Cory LeBlanc, and her family. A special thank you to the caregivers in the Orchard Unit and Creative Care Unit at the Cove Guest Home. Dad used to sing “When I Grow Too Old to Dream I’ll Have You to Remember.” Now we will be remembering him. Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, on Friday, April 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 at St. Theresa's Parish Church.
