Born in Scotchtown on September 2, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Emil and Matilda (O’Bracey) Krolichek. Helen will be greatly missed by her three daughters Mary (Jim) Moore (Corner Brook, NL), Barbara (Louis) Ruelland (New Waterford), and Stefanie (Kevin) Hanrahan (Red Deer, AB); her nine grandchildren Jim (Karen) Moore (St. John’s, NL), Michael (Lynn) Moore (Windsor, ON), Christopher Moore (Ottawa, ON), Taushauna Moore (Angelo Mazzuca) (Toronto, ON), Nancy (Gary) Lewis (Inuvik, NWT), Geoffrey Ruelland (London, ON), Stevie (Jay) Philpott (Red Deer, AB), Kelsey Hanrahan (Jakob Crockett) (South Carolina, USA), Shea Hanrahan (Vancouver, BC); and six great grandchildren Brody, Lilah, Kahlen, Maelle, Dennis and Shane. Helen was predeceased by her husband, Stephen, and her sister, Lillian. In the last two years, Helen was blessed to reconnect with Stephen’s family in Slovakia. The focus of Helen’s life was home and family, often teaching the simple pleasures of the outdoors. We remember and thank her for her quiet sacrifices. A private family visitation will be held at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley and assisted by Deacon Leo Penny will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard’s Church. All are invited to join the family for a reception at the KOC Hall on Plummer Avenue immediately following the funeral mass. Interment in Saint Michael’s Cemetery will take place at a later date. Born in Gillis Point, Annie C was the daughter of the late James Allan and Mary Elizabeth MacNeil. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth (Gregory) MacNeil, and Margaret Ann (Shawn) MacInnis and her pride and joy; her grandchildren Trevor, Jamie Anne, John Ross and Emily as well as many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Bernadette and Rosaire for always being there when we needed them. Annie was predeceased by husband, Angus and son Johnnie; as well as her brothers Columba, Michael Allan, Roderick, and Donald and her sister Mary Ann. The family would like to express our sincerest thanks to the doctors, nurses and all the staff at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital for their dedicated care of mom during her illness. Douglas 'Dougie' Hall Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: April 5th, 2014 Dougie Hall, age 52 of New Waterford, passed away on Saturday, April 5th, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Winnifred ‘Winnie’ (Slaney) Hall and the late John ‘Big Dan’ Hall. Dougie loved fishing, camping, playing poker and watching his favourite hockey team the Montreal Canadiens. He will be remembered for his great sense of humour and pleasant nature. Besides his mother, Dougie is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Hall (Daniel); son, Travis (Amanda); two brothers, Ambrose, Bernie all in New Waterford; five sisters, Beatrice (Robert) Marshe, Cheryl (Mark) Murphy, New Waterford, Gail (Billy) MacDonald, Alice (David) Caines, Rose, Glace Bay; four grandchildren, Emma Hiscock, Paige Hiscock, Avaeh Hiscock, Carly McPhee and his dearest friend, Diane Burke. Besides his father, Dougie was predeceased by his son, Matthew and his brother, John James Hall. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. Marjorie Ellis Born In: Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada Born: October 6th, 1919 Passed in: Boularderie Centre Passed on: April 3rd, 2014 Ellis, Marjorie Julia Kitteridge Molesworth age 94, died 7:21 p.m. Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, N.S. on April 3, 2014 with beloved daughter Marnie holding her hand. Born in Trois Rivieres, Quebec on October 6, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Marjorie (Thompson) Molesworth. She is survived by her daughter Marnie, son-in-law Dr. Peter Crosby and grandsons Xander and William Crosby, all of Norwalk, Ohio. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Cecily Molesworth of BC and Joan Molesworth of Trois Rivieres. She has many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband John Ellis, her parents, her brothers William and Robert Molesworth, along with special in-laws Pat and Doreen Ellis and Paish and Mack Rourke. Marj loved the out-of-doors, her home in Cape Breton, her family, reading and crossword puzzles. In remembrance of Marj, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Ann 'Sylvia' MacMullin Born: September 22nd, 1938 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: April 5th, 2014 It is with broken hearts, that we announce the peaceful passing of our beautiful mother, Sylvia MacMullin, on April 5, 2014 at the Glace Bay Hospital, surrounded by her loving family and angels from every department of the hospital. Ma is now back in the arms of our loving father, the love of her life. Born September 22, 1938, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Ann (Muise) McPhee. Ma is survived by her five loving children; Paula (Fabe Rhodes), Darrell (Brenda Miller), Karen (Donnie) Currie, Rhonda (Chris) Helgason, Terri (Kevin) MacNeil. She will also be sadly missed by her ten grandchildren, Amanda (Todd), John (Tracey), Starr (Dave), Cory (Mike), Dexter, Carter, Sonja, Mason, Devin (Tasha) and August; eight great-grandchildren; granddaughter-in-law Megan; her only living aunt, Bernadette MacMullin; sister-in-law Rhoda (Brian) Cann; brothers-in-law Fred Sim and Normie Coffin; step sister Ann Marie (Norman) Patterson; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides her parents, Ma was also predeceased by her husband James 'Buddy' MacMullin; grandson Jamie McMullin; baby brother Anthony; son-in-law Jimmy Hurley; sisters-in-law Ethel Sim and Amelia Coffin. Ma was a resident of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay, for the past two years, where she made many friends and where she was treated like a mother should be treated, “With Lots Of Love”. Bruno Scattolon Born In: Dominion Born: March 22nd, 1936 Passed in: Fernandina Beach Passed on: March 22nd, 2014 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Bruno Scattolon, Fernandina Beach, Florida. Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late Luigi and Carmella (Canova) Scattalon. He is survived by his wife Patricia Shea Sherwood; son Louis, Maryslanding NJ; daughter Gia (Norman) Paduano, Fernandina Beach, Florida; brothers Raymond (Advienne) Millville, NJ and Valentino (Corinne) Dominion; in-laws Dave and Nelda Sherwood, Fernandina Beach Florida. There was a private family service March 26th. A celebration of his life was held on April 2nd at Living Waters Church, Fernandina Beach, Florida. Frances Ellison (DeKouchay) Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 4th, 2014 Frances Sonya Ellison passed away on April 4, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Frances was born and raised in Sydney, the daughter of the late Michael and Mary DeKouchay. She graduated from Sydney City Hospital School of Nursing, having led the province that year in the examinations for Registered Nurses. Frances continued her education in teaching and administration at the University of Toronto and subsequently received her Bachelor of Science degree from St. F. X. University. In addition, she completed the two year program in hospital organization and management through the Canadian Hospital Association and the University of Manitoba. Frances was appointed as an Administrative Surveyor for the Canadian Council and Accreditation of Health Care Facilities for Hospitals in Canada. In Addition, she served as a Manuscript Reviewer of the Health Management Forum, the official publication of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives. Frances was a respected member of the Canadian and American Colleges of Health Services Executives having passed both Board of Governors examinations and she held a variety of prestigious positions. Frances received the Health Services Recognition Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to health care services in Nova Scotia by the Canadian College of Health Services Executive, Bluenose Chapter. In addition, Frances was awarded Lifelong Membership by the Canadian College of Health Leaders in recognition of her healthcare leadership for more than 25 years. She also received the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal. Frances’ 45-year career in health care included positions in Canada, Bermuda and the United States. When she returned to Sydney she quickly moved on to become a Nursing Instructor, Director of the School of Nursing, Director of Nursing Services, Director of Patient Care and ultimately Executive Director of Sydney City Hospital, a position she held for ten years. As a result of her leadership, many new programs and services were established at Sydney City Hospital including Cardiac Ultrasound and the CT Scan services. Frances was very much involved in the planning of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital as a member of the Executive Steering Committee. Frances was predeceased by her beloved son Michael Duane and precious grandson, Michael Kelly Ellison and her brothers, John, Loney and Michael DeKouchay; sister, Donna Ann and her daughter-in-law, Nancy. She is survived by her grandchildren, Sarah (Jason) and Lara (Matthew), great grandchildren, Hallie, Jude, Hannah and Hunter; special niece Dr. Alice Sette (Joe); close friend Sharon Lloy MacKay, nephews, nieces, cousins in both Canada, the United States and Australia. Frances will fondly be remembered as a devoted and dedicated mother, grandmother and friend. Memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Rev. Kathryn 'Lovey' Smith Born In: St. Peter's Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 4th, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Kathryn 'Lovey' Smith, 72 surrounded by her loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Friday, April 4, 2014 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born in St. Peter's, she was the daughter of the late John Alex and Jessie Mae (Morrison) MacDonald. Lovey's greatest passion in life was her devotion to her family. Her true pride and joy was her pillar of strength, Bill, her husband of 48 years. Her three daughters were the love in her heart and her five grandsons were the sparkle in her eye. Lovey was a passionate educator. Throughout her career, she touched the lives of many students and staff alike. Her passion for combining learning with fun was evident daily. Lovey fought a courageous battle for eight years with a smile on her face with never a complaint. Her strength, love and bravery were a testament to her spirit for life. She was a caring soul who loved to help others whether it be a smile, a kind word or a cup of tea and a slice of her homemade pie. Survived by her husband James 'Bill' Smith, Sydney; daughters, Melanie (Brad) Balmas, Sydney, Kathy (John) DiMichele, Philadelphia and Natalie Smith, Halifax; grandsons, Brett, Mitchell and Kenzie Balmas and Giovanni and Carlo DiMichele; sisters, Diane (Cecil) Cogswell, Evanston, Rita (Lin) Carter, Sampsonville and Joyce (Dwight) Carter, St. Peter's; brothers, John Dan (Mary) MacDonald and Robert (Julie) MacDonald, St. Peter's.
