Elaine Ferneyhough Born In: Sydney Mines Born: January 3rd, 1947 Passed in: Bras d'Or Passed on: April 21st, 2014 It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and sister, Elaine Ferneyhough, on Monday, April 21, 2014 at home. Born in Sydney Mines on January 3, 1947, she was the daughter of the late William and Mabel (MacDougall) MacKeigan. Elaine was a devout and faithful member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines, and a member of the North Sydney Pensioner’s Club. She also loved the dances at the Sydney Mines Pensioner’s Club on Saturday night. She is survived by her son Bill, Florence; and daughters Patsy, Florence, and Karen (John Shepherd), Sydney Mines. Also left to mourn are her loving grandchildren; Brian and Nicole Johnson, Kristen, Brandon and Alana Ferneyhough, and James and Morgan Campbell. She is also survived by sisters Joan Hunter, Truro, Willena (Joe) Smolenaars, Ontario, Pat (Lawrence) Taylor, New Brunswick, Nadine (John) Hatcher, Ontario, and her brother Frank MacKeigan (Shauna), Sydney Mines. Elaine will be sadly missed by her many friends. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband Raymond Ferneyhough; a brother Thane, and a sister Corinne MacKeigan. We would like to thank the VON staff for their many months of care. Visitation for Elaine Ferneyhough will be held in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Friday, April 25, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A celebration of her life will take place on Saturday, at 11 a.m. in Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Hazel Campbell Born In: Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada Passed in: Canada Passed on: April 22nd, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we note the passing of Hazel Sarah Campbell on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014. Hazel was born in Saint John, NB, daughter of Sadie (Crawford) and Sidney Jones. She was predeceased by her son, Carl Gerow; her sisters, Ethyl Myers, Vera Holburn, and Evelyn Joseph, as well as, her brothers, Sydney Jones, Sterling Jones, Eldridge Jones, Harry Jones and her grandson, Rossy Gerow. Surviving is son, Leonard Gerow, daughter, Heather Jupp and sister, Gladys Parker. Also survived by grandchildren, Carl Gerow, Leonard Gerow, Allister Gerow, Shelley Gerow, Dwayne Gerow, George Jupp and Scott Jupp; great-grandchildren, Haley Johnston, Amanda Gerow, James Gerow, Loren Gerow, Bailey Gerow, Breanna MacLean, Andy Garnier, Melissa Sherwood-Gerow, Norah Jean Jupp, Griffin Jupp, Connor Jupp, and Caylea Jupp. Born in Saint John, N.B., Hazel moved to Toronto at an early age and then spread her wings to spend time in Florida and California before settling in Cape Breton, the home of her heart. Hazel was a president of the Women’s Institute of Nova Scotia, a Matron in the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Daughters of The Nile, the Rebecca Lodge and St. John’s Anglican Church in Point Edward. In her early years, Hazel became a booking agent for professional musicians. After settling in Cape Breton, Hazel became an active member of the community by operating various business ventures including a home for persons with special needs, a farming venture. She worked in the pulp industry, ran a variety store, as well as multiple bed and breakfasts, commercial properties and local motels. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday April 28th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and the funeral will be held in the chapel Tuesday April 29th at 2 p.m., with Reverend Laura McCue officiating. Eva Mae Brennan Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 20th, 2014 Eva Mae Brennan, 79, of Harbourstone Enhanced Care, formerly of 238 Bentinck St., Sydney, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014 at the residence. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Leslie) Lapolder. She was a member of Sacred Heart parish, Sydney. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Leo in 2008 and by her sister, Theresa and her brother, Leslie George. Visitation for the late Mrs. Brennan will he held at Harbourstone after 9:30 a.m., Friday, April 25 with funeral service at 11 a.m. in Harbourstone with Rev. Duaine Devereaux officiating. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Murdock and Theresa (MacEachern) Fraser. She was a former member of St. Alphonsus parish, Low Point and more recently Our Lady of Fatima parish, Sydney River and a longtime member of the C.W.L. Marie was an avid card and bingo player throughout most of her life. A homemaker for most of her early years, she then worked as a dietician at the Spring Garden Villa. Most of all Marie enjoyed the company of her family and friends. Marie is survived by daughters, Rodena (Bernie) Fraser; Karen (John) Crane, both of Howie Center; Doreen (Bill) Laarakkers, Barrie, Ont.; Valerie (Angelo) Basicnano, Vernon, B.C.; sons, Peter, Joe (Barb), both of Orillia, Ont., Alphonse (Marichu), Kimberley, B.C.; sister, Mrs. Bonita ‘Bunny’ Marcella, Scarborough, Ont.; stepchildren, Linda (Adam) Buck, Ronnie, Jenny (Greg) MacIsaac, Alana (John) Forst, Allen (Judy), Gail (Denzel) Laporte and their children; brother, Archie (Caddie), New Waterford; 11 grandchildren, Blaine, Kathleen, Glen, Jordan, Jennifer, Stephanie, Lee, Lisa, Laura, Shawna, John; 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, Liam.
