Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late Clarence ‘Skiff’ and Evangeline (Nearing) Smith. Mike loved talking about his grandchildren and was a great Nascar racing fan. He will be sadly missed by many relatives and friends. Mike is survived by his wife, Mary (Went) Smith; two daughters, Patrice (Rick) Bridge, Bucerias, Mexico, Andrea (Dan) Hache, Courtena, B.C. and one son, Michael (Lisa Nelson), Petawawa, Ont. Mike is also survived by his grandchildren, who were his greatest joy in life, Jessica (Devon Miller), Kingston, Ont., Jordan, Jack, Isabella, Olivia, Emma, Micheala and by one sister, Mary Monica (Greg Kennedy), Windsor, Ont. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 14 from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. all in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Michael James Johnston Born In: Sydney Born: June 28th, 1943 Passed in: Red Islands Passed on: April 10th, 2014 It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Michael James Johnston which occurred peacefully at home on April 10, 2014, with his loving family at his side. Born in Sydney, June 28, 1943, Michael was a son of the late Joe Neil and Sadie (Campbell) Johnston, Red Islands. Employed in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator, Michael began his working career with Scotia Limestone Ltd., Irish Cove and was a former employee of Heckett Multi Serv, Sydney, H.W. Phillips & Son, Mira and retired from Burke Bros. Trucking, River Bourgeois in 2010. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, Michael is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Catherine Anne (Campbell) Johnston, formerly of Frenchvale; daughter, Denise MacDonald, St. Peter's; son, David (Olivia), Red Islands; his six adoring grandchildren, granddaughters, Jenna Michelle MacDonald, Port Hawkesbury, Morgan Aleda and Sadie Mary Rose Johnston, Red Islands; grandsons, Cole James, Jacob Norman and Rowan Michael Johnston, Red Islands; brothers, John Hugh (Betty), Sydney, Donald (Sherry), Grandville Ferry; sisters, Cathy (Gabe) LeBlanc, Pondville, Peggy (Rene) Kelly, Soldiers Cove, Donna MacNeil, Betty Lou (Michael Groom), both of St. Peter's. John MacCormick Born In: Sydney Mines Passed in: Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: April 3rd, 2014 It is with deep sadness that the family of John Joseph MacCormick, 66, announce his sudden passing on April 3, 2014, in Truro, N.S. Born in Sydney Mines in 1947, John was the son of the late Charles & Ethel (MacNeil) MacCormick. He attended Sydney Mines High School, Xavier Junior College, University of Windsor and St. Mary's University. He received his Masters in English, Summa Cum Laude, from University of Dublin, Trinity College in Ireland. John's career always involved a strong element of writing, as that was his true passion. He also spent countless hours with pen in hand creating works of poetry and prose. As a part of the performing arts community, while living in Halifax, John was proud to have had roles in several movies. His love of reading was evident as he could often be found at the local library or with a book by his side. John is survived by his daughter, Kiera MacCormick (Troy Zohner & son Keefer), Prince George, B.C.; Kiera's mom, Georgene Fiander in Victoria, B.C.; brother, Frank (Ann Marie) MacCormick, North Bay, Ont.; sisters, Mary Ann MacCormick (Ken Cormier) Sydney, N.S. and Catherine Collins (David), Sydney Mines, N.S. He was Uncle John to Troy & Tanya, Bonnie & Adam, and Jonathan & Michael. He was was a good friend to many in Truro and Halifax. A memorial service for John will take place in late August in Sydney Mines under the direction of the Francis Funeral home. James 'Jimmy' Lannon Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Sydney Passed on: April 9th, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Lannon of Lake Road, Glace Bay on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, James was the son of the late Edward ‘Ned’ and Catherine (O’Donnell) Lannon. Jimmy was a lifelong Maple Leafs fan. He worked as a truck driver for L.H. Chernin in his early years and later was employed with the town of Glace Bay before retiring in 1995. Jimmy was a compassionate and social man. Above all else he cherished his family dearly and will be sadly missed by all. Jimmy is survived by his two sons, Glen, James (Sana); one sister, Eileen (Keith) Olford; three brothers, Jack, Tom, Al (Gemma); and four grandchildren, Cheyenne, Kristen, MacKenzie, Talal; aunts, Kay, Jeanette and his uncle, Tommy. Jimmy was predeceased by his wife, Antoinette Angel (McDonald) Lannon, his brother, Fr. Joseph Patrick Lannon, uncles, Tony, Jim, aunts, Nellie, Josie, Pat, Irene and Joan. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private family funeral service will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, at a later date. Caroline 'Carrie' White Born In: New Waterford Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: April 10th, 2014 It is with sadness we announce the passing of Caroline Alice 'Carrie' White, 86, of Seaview Manor, Glace Bay on April 10, 2014 at the manor. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late George and Alice Donovan. Carrie enjoyed playing bingo with the residents at Seaview manor. Surviving are daughter, Brenda (Irving) MacDougall; sons, Blair, Blaise, Paul (Charlene), Gary; brothers, Neil, Johnny, Mylie; sisters, Mary, Rita, Rosie; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Carrie was predeceased by her husband, Paul; brother, George; sisters, Bridget 'Bridgie' MacNeil, Anna White, Margie Sylvester. Cremation has taken place. Bernard Daniel Campbell Born In: Iona Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: April 8th, 2014 It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Bernard Daniel Campbell, age 79 of Second Street, Glace Bay on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Iona, he was the son of the late John Francis and Elizabeth Campbell. Dad was a devoted father and grandfather. He lived for his girls and also took great pride in being a grandfather. He was known for his kindness, generosity and compassion for others. Dad was well known for his great sense of humour and avid devotion for Scottish music. In his earlier years, Dad was well known for playing the fiddle and stepdancing. Dad is survived by two daughters, Bernice (Derek) with whom he resided, Vanessa (Glenn); one sister, Marie McCarron, Moncton, N.B.; one grandson, Tyler, whom he loved dearly and was very proud of and one granddaughter, Brooklyn, whom he waited patiently for her arrival into the world. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and a special niece, Deborah Campbell. Dad was predeceased by three brothers, Leo, Andy and Stanley. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Callistus Abazie will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Columba Church, Iona followed by interment in the parish cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the parish hall. Robert Sterling Stevens Passed in: Barrie, Ontario, Canada Passed on: April 9th, 2014 Robert Sterling Stevens (served with the Sydney City Police force for 10 years and with the OPP for 30 years, retiring as Traffic Sargent with District 7, Barrie Detachment. Founding Pipe Major with OPP Pipe and Drums.) Passed away at the Royal Victoria Health Centre with his family by his side, on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, in his 83rd year. Robert, beloved husband of Cheryl 'Sherry' (nee Poirier). Son of Lillian and Lawson Stevens. Loving father of Kevin (Chantale), Bob (Kathy Rothlisberger). Grant (Linda), Catherine Aubut (Kevin McNally), Sandra Harris (Rob), Carol MacCormick (Brad Boshart) and Evan (Sarah). Cherished by 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Lawrence, Stuart, Christine and Ted. He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews. In keeping with Robert’s wishes, there will not be any services at this time.
