I am survived by my loving mother “Ma” Beatrice Delaney Cheticamp, N.S., and was predeceased by my father William Delaney. I am also survived by my two sons, Roger (Michelle) Matheson, Victoria Mines, and Mark (Charmaine) Matheson, Sydney, and grandchildren, Ian and Brooke. I am also survived by siblings, Paula (Bill) Haley, Margaree, Gloria (Ed) Matthews, Burlington, Ont., and Ambrose (Cathy) Delaney, Sydney. I am also survived by my nieces and nephews, Pamela and Andrew (Chrissy) Haley, Ashley Matthews, Lisa, Gregory, and Danielle Delaney. I was predeceased by birth parents, Peggy Fraser and Francis Delaney, and I am also survived by siblings, Cheryl MacLean, Antigonish, and Marlene Bond, Canso, and I leave behind my dear and special friend Shirley MacDougall of Sydney. Elaine will be sadly missed by not only her family and friends but also her co-workers and students at CBU where she was employed since 1996. There will be no visitation for Elaine. Florence passed away peacefully on March 29, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by her family. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Annie (Currie) MacKinnon. Florence was the youngest member of her family. She is survived by sons, Stewart Jr., Sydney, Todd (Gayle), Glace Bay; and daughter, Donna Marsh, Sydney; two grandchildren, Zackery and Alannah Pezzareallo (Shane) and great-grandaughter, Jayden. She is also survived by her sister, Theresa (Ted) Slaney, Montreal, Que.; sister-in-laws, Zita (Marsh) Armishaw, Dophie Marsh, Maurina Marsh, Marie Marsh and brothers-in-law, Gannon (Brother Ninian) Marsh, Fr. Anthony Marsh, Joseph Marsh, John J. MacDonald and many nieces and nephews. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.twcurry.com. “No one will ever love us like you did Mom, We love you so much” Garland Russell Ashford Born In: North Sydney Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: April 1st, 2014 With heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Garland Russell Ashford, 59, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the Northside Community Guest Home. Born in North Sydney, he was the son of Gladys (Blagdon) Ashford and the late Russell Ernest Ashford. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, and was a Past Grand Master of the Fulton Orange Lodge. Garland was employed as assistant chief steward with Marine Atlantic for 35 years. Garland loved spending time with his family and friends, joking and teasing them and having a good laugh and he will be sadly missed. Besides his mother Gladys, North Sydney, he is survived by his wife, Johanna (Kendall) Ashford; stepchildren, Tina (Lloyd) Keagan, Pembroke, Ont., Kim Buffett (Paul Lacroix), Ottawa, James Buffett (Kathy Teichroeb), Ottawa; his grandchildren, Amanda and Peter Keagan, Kody Buffett-Wilson, Ange-Lyne and Josianne Patenaude and Gauge Buffett and one great-grandchild Kendall Keagan. Also surviving are his two brothers, Jack (Darlene) Ashford and Donnie (Donna) Ashford, both of North Sydney; and two sisters, Pauline (Richard) Carroll, Florence, and Karen Ashford Clarke, Edmonton, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Teresa Terrace at the Northside Community Guest Home, Dr. John Kirkpatrick, Palliative Care , Dr. John Ritter and Cathy MacMillan and the many kind gestures offered to Johanna and the family, especially Sue Lewis for the many drives to and from the guest home. Visitation for Garland will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Francis 'Eric' Brophy Born In: Whitney Pier Passed in: Whitney Pier Passed on: March 28th, 2014 It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Francis ‘Eric’ Brophy at home on Friday, March 28, 2014. Born in Whitney Pier, Eric was the son of the late Frank and Belle (Ivany) Brophy. Eric joined the Air Force at the age of 17 and retired from the forces after 33 years of service. After retiring he returned with his family to live in the Pier. He went to work with the Corp of Commissionaires for a few years and being interested in local current affairs he became a committee member of JAG and fought to get studies done on the health of people in the Pier. Eric and Peggy attended all of the public meetings and reporters from far and wide requested interviews with him. Recently he was saddened by the closing of the Veteran Affairs offices. He stood with the other veterans and civilians who protested. He wrote letters to the editor and to members of parliament protesting the closing of these offices. Eric was a member of Holy Redeemer parish. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his leadership and kindness. Eric is survived by his son, Darren (Tonya Briand); daughter, Cecilia (Gene) Stanford; granddaughters, Katelin (Bruno), Kristin, Kira Stanford, Kassidy Harris and great-granddaughter, Mya. He is also survived by a sister, Eleanor; brothers, Albert (Sally), Brian (Jean) and Peggy's children, Sherry, Wendy, Scott, Trevor, Brent, Tracey, and their families. Besides his parents, Eric was predeceased by his first wife, Lorraine (Campbell), second wife, Peggy (French Burt) and a brother, Douglas. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Light refreshments will be served following the mass at Pier Community Funeral Home, reception area. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Online condolences may John James MacLellan Born In: Sydney Passed in: Northside East Bay Passed on: March 30th, 2014 John MacLellan, 64 of Sydney, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014, after a three year battle with cancer. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Alec Angus and Margaret (O’Handley) MacLellan. He was a heavy equipment operator and did much carpentry work with his brothers over the more recent years. John enjoyed spending his free time with his family especially when a match of horseshoes and other fun was involved, including the infamous cowflop. Ruby Robinson Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: March 30th, 2014 Ruby Robinson, age 53, who passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the Northside General Hospital was predeceased by her niece, Michelle Catherine Dolomont. Dorothy ‘Dollie’ Hood 91, Sydney Dorothy Hood (Bannister), 91, of Champlain Avenue, Sydney, N.S. passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014, at The Cove Guest Home, with family by her side. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late James and Nellie (Gunner) Bannister, formerly of “Petersfield Estate” in Westmount. Dorothy was a member of St. George’s Church, the Chancel Guild ACW and St. George’s Bible Study. Dorothy was a member of the CWAC in the Second World War having served in Montreal and Ottawa. Dorothy is survived by her husband, John L. Hood ( Jack); sons, John in Calgary and David (Olwen) in Winnipeg; three grandchildren, Katherine, Emily and Jonathan, and great-grandson, Jack, in Calgary; also one sister, Hettie Cornett in Ontario and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by four brothers, Victor, Frank, Bill and Ken and two sisters, Gwen and Muriel. Visitation with the family will be held Friday, April 4, 2014, from 4-7 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Laura McCue officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, at a later date. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of The Cove Guest Home, Creative Care unit for the past six years of excellent and compassionate care.
