Marple - 79 yrs Margaret Caroline (Lewis) Campbell - Michael Dougall MacPhee - 86 yrs KNOTT, Dianna On the evening of December 30, 2016, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the strongest, bravest and most resilient woman I know passed away peacefully. Dianna Kott was a pioneer and was well known in the Sydney area for both her being the first woman taxi driver and motorcycle enthusiast. She was survived by her children, Jeffery and Natalie; son-in-law, Larry; her grandchildren, Jessica and Jordon and her many adopted children Connie, Cheryl and Adelle to name a few, not to mention her countless friends. She was well known and loved and will be truly missed. She will be loved and missed by all that knew her. We love you Mom! Edith Hollingsworth Born: March 24th, 1946 Passed on: January 7th, 2017 It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Edith Marie Hollingsworth, age 70, of Emerald Street, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at her home. Born in North Sydney on March 24, 1946, Edith was the daughter of the late Edward and Jean (MacDonald) Power. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Edith is survived by her husband, Billy Bradley; her daughter, Lisa (Gordie) Ford, Georges River; her son, David (Aliccia), Alberta and two special nephews that were like sons to her, Raymond and Terry, Alberta; her six grandchildren that were her pride and joy, Alyssa, Madison, Kaydence, Riley, Grady and Ryker. She is also survived by her sister, Roseanne (Bill) Bennett, Big Bras d’Or and brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Irene), Jean (Joe), Chris (Roger), Dena (Rick) and Elaine (Tony), several nieces and nephews and close friends. Besides her parents, Edith was predeceased by her siblings, Edward Jr., Earl, Bobby, Tommy, Jimmy, George, Danny, Terry, Rucky, Peewee, Eric, Joan, Betty, Nina; a brother in infancy and two sisters-in-law, Linda and Laura. Visitation for Edith will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. MacDonald It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, Carol MacDonald on Sunday, January 8, 2017, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Big Bras d’Or, on October 14, 1949, she was the daughter of the late David and Gladys (Martin) MacDonald. Carol worked for many years at the Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck and later in Grand Prairie Alberta. Carol was an active member of St. James Presbyterian Church in Big Bras d’Or. She devoted many years to the CGIT movement which was an important part of her life. She loved helping people and showed this through her work and devotion to duty, her concern for others and her involvement in volunteer work and charities especially Operation Smile. Family was dear to Carol’s heart, especially her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carol’s acquaintances were many and her friends were true, especially Lillian Grant, Anne Martin, Pat Marsh and Dolores Harding. She also had numerous friends in Liverpool especially Susie who never missed a week without sending a card, a word of encouragement and love, we thank you all. We are also very grateful for the loving care Carol received from the doctors, nurses and staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the Northside General Hospital and Dr. Ritter of Palliative care and the VON. Carol is survived by three sons, David (Lisa LeBlanc) and Clayton, both of Grand Prairie, Alberta, Scott (Pam) of Sydney and by her ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her three sisters-in-law, Freda Martin, Lunenburg, Alice (Bob) Annett, Dartmouth, Mary Lou MacDonald, Ross Ferry; by a brother-in-law, Jack MacDonald of Boularderie; by cousins, Catherine Allen of Big Bras d’Or and Willena MacLeod of Sydney Mines. She was predeceased by her husband, Nelson; her son, Darrell; brothers, John Martin, Rene White; brother-in-law, Harold MacDonald and cousin, Frank MacLeod. Wenda Hughes Wenda (Wendy) Lee Walker Hughes, passed away peacefully after a lengthy cancer battle under the compassionate care of Dr. Maddison and St. Joseph’s Hospice in Sarnia, Ontario. Wendy is survived by children, Tom, Vancouver, Ryan (Michele Fliss), Sarnia and Natasha (John Germain), Toronto. Wendy was born August 15, 1940 in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to the late Joseph and Mary (MacLean) Walker. Wendy leaves behind siblings, John (Carmaine), Halifax, Catherine Roberts (Richard), Pittsfield, Mass., Maureen MacDonald (Ross deceased 2006), Sydney, Marion Beaton (John), Mabou, Everett (Mona), Sydney, Charles (Wendy), Calgary, Gordon (Marsha), Calgary, Joanne Chase (Steve), Halifax and sister-in-law, Angela (Alec) MacDonald, Sarnia and is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Wendy is predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Thomas Hughes (2007). In the spring of 2010, Wendy was diagnosed with an aggressive type of breast cancer. Her determination led her to surpass all odds and overcome many setbacks over the course of her battle. Much of that will and strength came from her affection for her grandchildren, Sydney, Cameron, Morgan, Leo, Harper, Thomas and Preston. Wendy would not have been capable of enduring many parts of her journey if it had not been for her Angel Warriors holding her up every step of the way. She was given the gifts of dignity and respect during her illness by her coach, leader, confidante, and powerhouse, Amy Hughes, as well as the unwavering support from her lifelong friends, Fran, Marg, Elaine, Donna and Edith. Sarnia’s CCAC and the VON teams cared for Wendy regularly and their visits often made her day. The entire Bluewater Health staff in Oncology, Emergency, ICU and Palliative all gave Wendy exemplary care, particularly Dr. Dosteler, Dr. Yoshida and her G.P. Dr. Borek. Arrangements have been entrusted to D. J. Robb Funeral Home & Cremation Centre (102 Victoria St N, Sarnia). Cremation and a private family service has taken place. John (Butch) Alexander Dunn Passed on: January 7th, 2017 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of (Butch) John Alexander Dunn, 68 of Glace Bay on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Palliative Care Unit in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a courageous 10 year battle with cancer. Butch made a peaceful journey to heaven, with his loving wife, Theresa and sister, Muriel by his side. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Cleophus (Mac Donald) Dunn. Butch worked for 30 Years in numerous Coal Mines, retiring from Lingan Phalen. He then spent his summers with his son Donnie and Grandchildren, enjoying his family watching Hockey Games, News casts and having in depth conversations with his son Michael about world events. He will be forever missed by his loving wife of 45 years, Theresa (Walsh); his sons, Michael (Glace Bay), Donnie (Dawn), Ontario; grandchildren, Ebony, Carmel, Jasper and Keifer; brothers Jimmy (Glace Bay), Donnie, Joey and Maurice (Toronto); sister, Muriel (Bates) Toronto and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents Butch was predeceased by his sisters, Catherine, Irene and Leona. As requested by the Family there will be No Visitation and Cremation has taken place. Marple Born: April 29th, 1937 Passed on: January 8th, 2017 It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, Earl Marple on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the age of 79. Born April 29, 1937 in Big Intervale, he was the son of the late James and Mildred (Etheridge) Marple. Earl worked for many years with CNR, transitioning to CN Marine in North Sydney where he remained until his retirement in 1994. Earl was an avid hunter and fisher. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren to favourite hunting and fishing spots along the Margaree River. He always looked forward to springtime every year so he could ready his cabin for another season. Earl was a devoted member of Northside Baptist Church in Sydney Mines. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret (Clark) Marple; his three daughters, Beverly MacAulay, Sydney Mines, Carolyn Robinson, Florence, Mary (Scott) MacDonald, Big Bras d’Or; by his grandchildren, Shannon MacAulay (Clifford Copage), Jennifer (Robbie) Horwood and their father Charlie MacAulay, Jonathan Robinson, Hanna MacDonald (Bryden Orrell), Emma MacDonald, Graham MacDonald; his three great grandchildren, Alexavier Doucette, Michael Copage, Claire Horwood; by his sister, Jessie Tufts of Halifax and many nieces and nephews. Earl was predeceased by five sisters, Myrtle Stewart, Kathleen Ross, Eulah Chandler, Marguerite Cloney, Rita Wyrus; by three brothers, Howard Marple, Clarence Marple, Lewis Marple and son-in-law, Clayton Robinson. MARGARET CAROLINE CAMPBELL Passed on: January 9th, 2017 We regret the loss of our beloved mother, wife and grandmother on Monday, January 9, 2017. Mom was the daughter of the late Mary nee Robello and Eldridge Lewis. Mom was predeceased by her brother, John Arthur and sister, Anne. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Harry. She was the loving mother of her children and is survived by her daughter, Carolyn and son, Harry (Rose Marie) and her grandson, Brett. Mom loved children and will deeply be missed by her family. Michael Dougall MacPhee Born: September 23rd, 1928 Passed on: January 8th, 2017 Michael Dougall MacPhee died on January 8, 2017. He was born in Big Pond, Cape Breton on September 23, 1928 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from St. Francis Xavier University in 1950. Mike went on to do post-graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in the field of public health. He worked for 38 years with the Nova Scotia Department of Health in both Sydney and Halifax, where he spent the last 18 years of his career as Chief Public Health Inspector. One of Mike's most notable achievements was as provincial representative for the development of the first Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality. He was a two-term President of the Public Health Association of Nova Scotia and a member of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Public Health Association. He retired in 1991. Mr. MacPhee was one of the last-surviving native Gaelic speakers in Cape Breton and spent time over past several summers recording Gaelic stories with a Big Pond historian. He was as an active volunteer in the Halifax community having been a former director in the Centennial Minor Hockey Association and the Boy Scouts of Canada. Mike was also a longtime member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church (now part of St. Benedict's) where he served several terms as Chair of the Parish Council. He served in the Canadian Army and was a member of the Canadian Legion. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elaine (Gallivan) MacPhee. Mr. MacPhee is also survived by his two sons, Dougall (Calgary, AB) and Michael (Denver, CO), along with Michael's wife, Pamela and their two sons, Luke and Seamus. Mr. MacPhee was predeceased by his parents, Dougall and Mary Belle. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel at 755 George Street in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 13 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Big Pond with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating and interment to follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held in the church at 10 a.m. on January 13 prior to the Mass. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Mary's graveyard fund, Big Pond, Nova Scotia.
