Born in Sydney, April 18, 1923 to the late Daniel MacNeil and Elizabeth (Bessie) MacNeil. Sis is survived by her children, Gayle (Bernie) Landry, East Bay, Charlie (Phyllis) Sydney, Hector (Sharlene), ON, Toby (Natalie), ON, Brian (Jackie), BC, Donnie (Paula), Sydney, Debi (Shaun), BC, Danny (Kathy), Sydney; 14 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; sisters, Isabel Flood and Catherine ‘Cathy’ Dolan; sister-in-law, Sally MacNeil, all of Sydney and special friend, Diane MacDonald. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband of fifty nine years, Tobias ‘Toby’; daughter, Agnes Marie in infancy; grandson, Tony; brothers, Michael and Alex and sister-in-law, Lucy. Mom’s first love was her family, she was happiest in the midst of a huge gathering, especially if cards came into play. She will be greatly missed by her Club Girls, Mary Jane MacMullin, Gina Binns and Dolly Quinn. Mom was a frequent visitor to the many community card games that would be taking place, allowing her the chance to meet new and old friends. Her apartment at Wentworth Place became the focal point, whether it was for a game of Crib, Tarbish, conversation or just a good cup of Tea, everyone was welcomed. For Sunday brunch the more the merrier, ‘Open another pack of bacon, add some eggs, and have a seat’. We would like to thank the Doctors, nurses and staff of the CBRH especially the An Cala Palliative Care Unit. Visitation will take place Thursday, January 19, 2017, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on George St. Sydney. Funeral Mass to be celebrated Friday, January 20, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima, Sydney River, with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Alfred John MacNeil Passed on: January 15th, 2017 It is with sadness that we, the family of Alfred MacNeil, announce his unexpected passing on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at the Northside General Hospital at 81 years of age. Predeceased by his parents, John R and Mary Jane (MacLean) and brothers, Leo, Roy and Howard. Alfie is survived by his beloved wife, Deanna; his daughters, Laureen (Bob Kerr), Gail (Rob) Gromick and Verna; grandchildren, Sarah (Graham) and Morgan (Bianca); great grandchildren, Zander and Ava; sister, Jessie MacNeil; sisters-in-law, Margie (Leo) and Margie (Howard), as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives including his cousins, Sadie and Stacey. Alfie was involved in his community throughout his life. He was a school teacher who taught Industrial Arts in Cape Breton for 38 years and then upon retirement went to work at the family barber shop. He was an active member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish and sat on numerous committees, most notably the cemetery committee. He was a longtime member of both the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #12 as well as Route 223 (Iona) Forestry. Mary Catherine Reid Passed on: January 15th, 2017 We regret to announce the death of our Mom, Mary Catherine Reid, 92 of Dominion on January 15, 2017 at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Richard (First World War Veteran) and Catherine Crowdis. Mary being the wife of a coal miner and the mother of five boys, her days were busy. She enjoyed baking, people visiting and summers in Cheticamp. Mary was an unpretentious lady and never liked anyone fussing over her. In keeping with her wishes there will be a private ceremony and her cremains will be laid to rest next to her late husband Sonny. Mary is survived by her sons, Lexter (Marina), Vernon, Garth and Joe. Also surviving is brother, Wallace Crowdis and sisters, Sylvia Piercy, Elizabeth Gasko, Patricia MacNeil, Verna MacNeil and two grandsons, Arthur Charles and Jason. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Charles (Sonny) and son, Lorne. Hillier Iqaluit, Nunavut/George’s River It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the sudden passing of Kathy Darlene Hillier, age 56, loving mother, sister, aunt and friend on January 6 2017 at QE11 Health Science in Halifax. Born in Sydney, Kathy was the daughter of Phyllis and Fred Hillier. Kathy lived in Iqaluit for the last 15 years where she ran her own business “Just in time Cleaning” Kathy has a zest for life and love for people. She love to travel and made many trips to Dominican Republic where she made many close friends. It didn’t matter who they were, rich or poor, Kathy showed compassion to all. Her smile lit up the room, she definitely live, loved and laughed. She will be deeply missed by her many friends and extended friends in Dominican Republic. Kathy is survived by her parents, Phyllis and Fred Hillier, her son Justin Thomson (Nina), her siblings, Derrick (Sandra) Hillier, Kim (Luc) Painchaud, Tara and Darren Hillier, her two nephews Kyle (Natasha) Hillier and Logan Hillier. Neil Joseph MacLellan Passed in: Brandon, Manitoba, Canada Passed on: January 14th, 2017 On Saturday, January 14, 2017, WO (Ret'd) Neil Joseph MacLellan, CD, age 78 years, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, Brandon, Manitoba. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Ronald D. and Florence (MacRae) MacLellan. Left to mourn are his wife, Joan (St. Germain); sons, Ron and Jan, Don and Angela, Neil and Susan and his grandchildren, Sydney, McKenna, Therran and Cooper; sisters, Marg Sheppard (Frank, deceased), Sydney, Anne Gardiner (Malcolm, deceased), New Waterford, Joan MacLean (Ronnie, deceased), Bomanville, ON. , Mary Deveaux (John), Whitby, ON; brothers, Peter (Lois, deceased), Martin (Helen), Bill (Susan), Jack (Fern), all of Ontario; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents and a brother, R.D. MacLellan. Neil served in the Artillery for 36 years with many postings. An avid hockey and ball player, he also coached minor hockey and baseball. Upon retirement, Neil became an avid golfer and served on the Army and Navy Committee. The Celebration of Neil's Life will take place at Memories Chapel, 330 18th St. North, Brandon, Manitoba on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 1 p.m. Arlene Robertson will officiate. Interment will be in the Field of Honour at the Brandon Cemetery. A reception will follow at the A.N.A.F., 31 14th Street, Brandon, Manitoba.
