Robert MacNeil - 69 yrs Russell Joseph Farrow - 50 yrs Irene “Betty” Dean - 85 yrs Dorothy Catherine (Boudreau) Shaw - Dean (Hines) Marsh - Marion Elizabeth (Corbett) Braganza With broken hearts we announce the passing of Marion Elizabeth (Corbett) Braganza, a mother, sister, aunt and friend to many. Marion is predeceased by her husband, Lenny Braganza (Toronto); parents, Pius and Elizabeth (MacKay) Corbett of Dominion N.S; sisters, Lillian Usher, Joyce Clarke and brothers, Robert, James and Kenneth in infancy. Marion is survived by her only son, Donald; sisters, Evangeline Pasher, Florence Peach, Geraldine Williams (Joseph), Valerie Calhoun (James), Muriel Corbett, Collette Parsons (Dave), Francis Corbett, Loretta Munroe (Kenneth) and brother, Thomas Greg (Mary), along with sister-in-law, Carlotta Christine Matilda Pierro Born: March 14th, 1951 Passed on: January 16th, 2017 Christine Matilda Pierro passed away peacefully in Sydney on January 16th, 2017 with her family at her bedside. Christine was born March 14th 1951 to the late Victor and Louise Pierro of Wagmatcook. Christine grew up in Wagmatcook and spent her adult years living in Toronto and Halifax before retiring home in Wagmatcook. Family and friends were Christine's passion and delight. She was an active volunteer in her community and was a strong activist and supporter of the Indian Residential School healing. Christine was proud of her aboriginal roots and she cherished and embraced her culture and traditions. Christine leaves behind her children, Francine McDonald (Preston) of Indian Brook, Michael of Maine, Matilda Koopmann (Frank) of Elmsdale, Byron Googoo (Joanna) of Whycocomagh; her beloved grandchildren, Benjamin, Shade, Kimberly, Bonnie, Titus, Byron, Kia, Logan, Ocean and Mason; her siblings, Alena Usher of Sydney, Yvonne Pierro (Peter) of Wagmatcook, Charles Pierro (Mary) of Wagmatcook, Francis-Chisholm Pierro of Wagmatcook; her special niece, Kim and many other nieces and nephews. Christine was predeceased by her sisters, Rubena Gould, Theresa Pierro, Bernadette Pierro; her brothers, Peter Tony Pierro and Michael Pierro and grandson, Shade Googoo. Christine's distinctive laugh will ring throughout the heavens and her direct and inquisitive spirit will, no doubt, keep Saint Peter on his toes. May she Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory. Visitation for Christine Pierro will begin on Thursday, January 19 after 7 p.m. at the Elder Center in Wagmatcook. Carleton MacRitchie Campbell Passed on: January 13th, 2017 Carleton MacRitchie Campbell of Englishtown passed away January 13, 2017 at Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck NS at age 72. Carl was the son of the late Thomas Campbell and Isabel (Montgomery) Campbell. Well known for his cast iron stomach and sharp sense of humor, when Carly wasn’t traveling the province working from one job site to another or puttering around Campbell’s Hill in his off time, he enjoyed nothing better than sharing a nice long story with family and friends over a heated game of crib with the sound of fiddle tunes playing in the background. His sense of work ethic and commitment to getting a job done right was only surpassed by his love and dedication to his family. We’ll miss you dearly Dad... He is survived his wife, Emiline Joyce ( MacAskill ); son, Sandy ( Daria); daughter, Monica (Jim) and grandchildren, Tom and Jenna. Cremation has taken place, a celebration of Carl's life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 21st, at Englishtown Community Hall with burial at a later date. Arrangements under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. Fr. Robert McNeil Passed on: January 16th, 2017 Fr. Robert McNeil, age 69, a former resident of Reserve Mines passed away at his residence in Halifax on Monday, January 16, 2017. Fr. Robert was a former longtime parish priest at Holy Family Church in Eskasoni. The complete funeral arrangements and obituary will be announced by V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Russell Joseph Farrow Born: May 18th, 1966 Passed on: January 2nd, 2017 It is with deep sorrow, that we announce the sudden passing of a dear son, brother, father, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. Russell age 50, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2017 as the result of a cardiac event in Edmonton. He had been a resident of Alberta for the past ten years. Born in Sydney, May 18, 1966, he was the son of Thelma May (Gillis) and the late Russell Joseph Farrow. While a resident of Glace Bay, he resided in the New Aberdeen area of town and was a member of the former St. John’s Church. Russell spent the past number of years working in Alberta as a pipefitter and plumber. He previously lived in Kitchener, Ont. and earlier worked at a campground in mainland Nova Scotia and at the Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax. He was a very emotional and gentle boy who enjoyed hockey, baseball, singing and dancing. He was also very witty and had a great sense of humor. He liked driving his car and his cars were always very nice and sporty. Russell will be remembered as a very considerate and kind-hearted man who loved his family very much. He will be held forever in our hearts. Russell is survived by his mother, Thelma; son, Keigan Gracie; brothers, Raymond Glenn and James Darren, all of Glace Bay. He will also be sadly missed by his aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides his father Russell Joseph Farrow, he was also predeceased by a sister in infancy; paternal grandparents, Thomas and Violet Farrow, New Waterford; maternal grandparents, James and Marion Gillis, Glace Bay; step-grandmother, Lucy (Walsh) Gillis; several aunts and uncles. Cremation has taken place in Edmonton. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. in the V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Fr. Leo Boone will immediately follow the visitation at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be at a later date in St. John’s Cemetery, Glace Bay. As an expression of sympathy for Russell, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Diabetes Association. Irene ‘Betty’ Dean Born: December 26th, 1931 Passed on: January 15th, 2017 With sincere sadness, we, the family of Betty Dean, regret to announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born December 26, 1931, in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Edgar and Sarah Elizabeth (Band) Pearson. An active member of the Church of Christ the King, Sydney, Betty was involved with the Altar Guild and ACW, as well as helping out with various other duties. She was also a member of the former St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Coxheath, where she participated in the ACW and the Altar Guild. Every week she took great pride in doing the linens required for the altar. In her childhood, Betty was a member of All Saints Anglican Church, New Waterford, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, as well as helping out with Sunday School and the ACW. In 1994, she was the recipient of the Ann Terry Memorial Award. Betty also received the Government of Canada award for volunteering, as well as an award for her hard work with the Cape Breton Society of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She was also very active with the deaf council in Halifax. Betty is survived by her two sons, Brian (Doris), Albert Bridge and their children, Charmaine and Kimberley and Brent (Peggy), Moncton, N. B. and their children, Abby and Emily; brother, James (Odile), New Waterford; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Cpl. Howard Dean in 1989; sisters, Ethel MacLean and Marion Oliver; brothers, Sidney ‘Sid’, Thomas, Charlie, Richard and Robert (in infancy); brothers-in-law, Nelson MacLean and Austin Oliver. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. A requiem funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ the King on Wednesday 2 p.m., with Rev. Reg MacDonald officiating. Interment in St. Mark’s Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Society of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians. Dorothy Catherine Shaw Passed on: January 15th, 2017 With broken hearts and beautiful memories we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, grandmother and sister, Dorothy Catherine (Boudreau) Shaw on Sunday, January 15th at home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Sydney she was the daughter of the late Elias and Catherine (Snow) Boudreau. Dorothy was well known for her love of cooking, in younger years Dorothy had a home bakery and in later years managed the cafeteria at the school in St. Peters. A wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, Dorothy was especially proud of her grandchildren, she always followed their activities and accomplishments and could often be caught boasting about them to anyone who would listen. She is survived by her loving children, Debbie (Richard) MacLeod, Juniper Mtn., Donald (Wanda) Shaw, Dutch Brook, Dale (Ronald) Henneberry, Cow Bay, Derrick (Karen) Shaw, Dunster B.C. and David (Jenny) Shaw; her grandchildren, Breanna (Brett) Smith, Maggie MacLeod, Ashley Shaw, Brandon Shaw, Andrew Henneberry, Mark Henneberry, Madelyn Shaw, Rozina Shaw and Catherine Shaw. Also survived by her loving brothers and sisters, Bernie (Connie) Boudreau, Ontario, Michael (Linda) Boudreau, Coxheath, Caroline (Donald) Ross, West Chezzetcook, Francis (Bonnie) Boubreau, Coxheath, Raymond (Allison) Boudreau, Edmonton, Linda (Read) Johnston, Glace Bay and Denise (Alan) Richardson, Hampden, Maine. Dorothy was predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years, Donald Shaw and parents, Elias and Catherine Boudreau. No visitation at Dorothy’s request. Funeral service will take place Wednesday, January 18th at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Johnstown, Father Philitoski presiding. Interment will follow at Lochside Cemetery, Loch Lomond. Dean (Hines) Marsh Passed on: January 13th, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Dean Marsh, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend on January 13, 2017, at the Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines. Dean was born in Glace Bay and lived the majority of her life in Mill Creek. She was the daughter of the late Nan and George Hines. Dean was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or. She loved to swim and dance and, until her diagnosis of Alzheimers, was a lover of crossword puzzles. Over the years she and Garnet enjoyed many camping trips across Canada and the US. Dean continued to share this tradition with her grandchildren. She is survived by her loving and supportive husband of 55 years, Garnet; daughters, Colleen (Shaun), Kelly (Mark); grandchildren, Aaron, Hayley and Logan, all of Ontario. Also surviving are brothers-in-law, Lorne, Jackie (Sandra), Basil (Claire), Owen (Dorothy), Roy (Nancy), Greg, Austin (Sheila); sisters-in-law, Cora (Lawrence), Darlene (Carey); many nieces and nephews and special friend, Donalda Maxwell of Sydney Mines. Besides her parents she was predeceased by sisters, Anna, Elva, Monica and brothers, John, Jim and George, also brother’s-in-law, Ronald. Dean & Peter Neary was the last surviving member of her immediate family. We especially thank the many family members and friends who spent time with Dean this past year at the Manor. Many thanks to Dr. Kohlsmith and the staff of Miners Memorial Manor for their compassionate care. Once again you treated us like family and we are truly grateful. There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January, 17, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. A reception will follow at the parish hall.
