Passed away at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Saturday, Feb 8, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Julia (Paul) Francis, both of Nyanza. She retired to her birth place of Wagmatcook in 1997. Annie was also a member of the Peace Corps, she supported many causes including the Walk for Hunger and the Walked against domestic Violence and volunteered her time to many good just and kind hearted causes. She was a giver to many charities and an advocate of human rights. She had a very special love for children who returned this love many years after they had grown up. She had a special heart and love for people and never turned anyone (in need) away. Annie (Nannette) Oleson walked the walk of goodness, kindness and love throughout her entire life. To the world you are a mother but to the family you are the world. She is survived by her children, Joanne Dunn, John Oleson, Jr., William (Tommy) Oleson, Julia Duling, Janie Oleson and Theresa Podolske, all of Boston, MA., Joseph Oleson and William (Tommy) Oleson, residing in Wagmatcook. She is also survived by brothers, Francis Joe Francis, Edward Francis of Wagmatcook First Nation Indian Reserve and Annie Joe of Newburyport, MA. and by 46 grandchildren and great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by daughters, Wanda and Jeanne Oleson; sisters, Katy Googoo, Theresa Bernard and Annie Isabell Paul; brother, Stephen Francis. Children being an extremely important part of her life, after raising 9 children of her own, she went to college in Boston and received her teacher certification going on to become head teacher and director of daycare at the Boston Indian Council. Without you mom there would be no us. We love you and miss you Mama and we will all be together someday, until then we will miss you and we love you and will keep you in our hearts and prayers until that day. We love you with all our heart Mama, you are forever our hero. Visitation at 12 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, February 15th, 2017 at St. Michael Church, Baddeck, NS, funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. with Fr. Paul Abbas officiating. "Babe" Fiander It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Audrey Kathleen “Babe” Fiander, age 83, on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Babe was born in Montreal, May 5, 1933, moved to North Sydney in her younger years, she was a daughter of the late Robert Morgan O’Quinn and Emma (Achurst) O’Quinn. In her younger years Babe was an avid hockey player with the North Sydney ladies team, an archer and swimmer, she was always active. She enjoyed the outdoors, spending many hours hunting, fly fishing, camping and gardening. She was a volunteer and founder of the Sprigs of Heather Pipe Band and a volunteer at the Northside Community Guest Home and throughout her life was a constant caregiver. With her husband Don, she owned and operated DonRay Lumber and Building Supplies, Sydney Mines and later Mr. Fi’s Framing in North Sydney until her retirement in 1990 She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney. Babe is survived by her husband, Don Fiander; two daughters, Paula Fiander (Luc Schingh) and Belinda (Bill) Finney both of Kelowna, BC, and by her grandson Jordan Fiander Finney; two sisters, Laura Alyward , Oshawa, Betty (Gus) MacPherson, Corona Del Mar, California and by several nieces and nephews. Babe was predeceased by her sister Hazel King. By request there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, February 19th, at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney with Rev. Julio Martin and Father Damien MacPherson officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, at a later date. Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com Mamie (Hannah) James Passed on: February 9th, 2017 Beloved Mother, Sister, Nanny, Great-Nanny and Friend. Another angel got her wings on Thursday, February 9, at the age of 97 years. Mamie passed away peacefully at Harbourstone, with her loving family by her side. She was the daughter of the late Matthew and Mary (Murphy) Yhard. She lived most of her life at 385 Gibbon Street, New Waterford. For the last three years she lived at Parkland Assisted Living on Kenwood Drive, Sydney River and the last 3 months at Harbourstone. Mamie was a member of St. Agnes Parish, New Waterford. Mamie is survived by her children, Tom (Eileen) of Frankford, ON, Donna (Garth) Smith of Bedford, NS, Sheldon (Emelia) of Orangeville, ON and Charlotte (Dave), Gardiner Road, Sydney, NS and close family friend, Bernice Grant; grandchildren, Greg (Joanne), Darren (Tracey), Charlene (Mike), Starla (Rick) and Darlene; great-grandchildren, Carson, Kaylee, Colton, Morgan, Ethan, Avery, Ella, Hailey and Carter. Mamie is also survived by her brother, Chris Yhard, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mamie was predeceased by her husband, Gomer, in 1983; her three brothers, Gerald, Tom and Matt; six sisters, Dot Kiston, Helen MacEachern, Mary Ash, Marg Mulvaney, Bridget Hilder and Dolly Long. A stay at home mother and wife that raised four children whose family was the center of her universe. Mamie loved going to the casino, doing her crossword puzzles, watching hockey and baseball, going to ‘Aging Gracefully’ and her daily visits from her daughter, Charlotte. At Parkland, she had many friends, along with her cousin, Sister Mary Murphy, who also resided there. Mamie enjoyed her daily visits from her, along with the other Sisters who lived there and her table buddies whom she adored, Russel, Genevieve, and Alice. Thank you to the staff of Parkland Assisted Living whom for three years looked after Mamie and whom she loved dearly. You were all her second family. Thank you for the love and support you gave her over the last three years. To the staff at Harbourstone Miner’s Lane, the nurses and workers who were all so kind to her and went above and beyond their call of duty. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts; you are all true caregivers. Also, special thanks to Dr. Murdock Smith, family physician. Mamie also enjoyed her daily visits from her brother Chris, who resides at Harbourstone as well. A special thank you to our family friend, Bernice Grant, who was only ever a phone call away for Mamie. Mamie always said that there was no truer friend than Bernice, who has become a member of our family over the years. Thank you also to Dr. John Ritter, who was always there for Mamie and went above and beyond, with unscheduled visits to see her. Mamie always referred to Bernice and Dr. Ritter as her ‘angels.’ Also, thank you to Father Dan Boudreau who prayed with her and put a smile on her face in her final moments. A celebration of Mamie’s life will take place on Friday, February 17th, at 11 a.m. at St. Leonard’s Parish, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Daniel Boudreau officiating. As per Mamie’s wishes, there will be no visitation and cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. Burial will be in Union Grove cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the KOC, 3236 Plummer Ave, New Waterford. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
